Listen to KPFK's staff talking to Pacifica Exe Director

by kpfk loyal volunteer Saturday, Mar. 29, 2014 at 7:31 PM

Listen to a KPFK interview with Summer Reese a few nights ago, produced and interview by Roy Tuckman and Eben Rey, available on Soundcloud. Interesting to have direct verbal vocal information instead of so many other internet shades of grease that proliferate in trying to form stories and gossip and biased versions of what happened to whom. The direct person involved in the personnel issues of Pacifica are discussed here. KPFK listeners called in and added opinions also. Can the whole organization be saved and healed and repaired so it will not repeat [and again and again] ???

https://soundcloud.com/tracy-rosenberg/eben-rey-hosts-summer-reese-on?utm_source=soundcloud&utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=facebook

This is a sound room expose for an interview between 2 KPFK late nite staffers and Reese, Pacific Executive Director, a few nights ago, providing more direct information of the conflicts, firings, illegalities, confrontations and all that is "happening" in the Pacifica headquarters located in Berkelely adjacent to the KPFA radio station.

Questions and direct answers are here. Amazing ?

Listen and try to decipher what is actually happening that is endangering Pacifica as a nonprofit corporation....that can collapse or be ruined by legal suits and illegal maneuvers...and then affect all the other 5 stations especially including KPFK, one the most affected due to it's struggling financial condition.

Your Comments on this Facebook page can be also added, non-maliciously and no attacking allowed, please !!!

Not taking sides or leaning hard to prove anyone wrong or right or good or bad, listen and find out what else we here in LA have not known or been told, so far.

Finally, 2 people courageously exposing the secrets that keep the whole set of stations and it's holder in deep factionalized chaos repeatedly. Finally a broadcast, also available on the KPFK archives for Something's Happening Show also, same program.

check it out. And share this info with others who may also be worried, concerned, sick and tired of all the fighting and one-sided attempts at take-overs, at killing-off-others-with-malicious-misinformation, and at maybe even some hoping for a "take over"....

Issues like: KPFA not being able to be audited in allotted time, Corporation for Public Broadcasting withholding payments due to audits and financial papers not being sent in a timely manner and when KPFK listeners, payers, are continually exhorted to pay, pay, buy, send money! and pay again, then the questions about how inefficient or dysfunctional the system[s] have been and continue to be to this moment.

There being no Human Resources expert in the Pacifica systems means anyone can claim anything as "true" or "fact" and there are no corrections, rules, guidelines nor preventions for malactions.

and see this great Sayles story that was available on audio but it can be found in a book [ yes. it's from Amazon ]that describes these scenes humorously, entitled "The Anarchists Convention" . - “

Sayles, the famous writer director wrote a piece that describes such scenes fantastically and funny too called

"The Anarchists Convention", to be read in written form - now available at http://www.amazon.com/The-Anarchists-Convention-Other-Stories/dp/1560256915

when it was findable in no LA local city libraries for years....it should be in a theater and all Pacifica affiliated people see it for FREE and recognize themselves 'in person'.

KPFK is on youtube too, re Reese Exe Director of Pacifica

by kpfk loyal volunteer Saturday, Mar. 29, 2014 at 8:20 PM

Roy of Something's Happening wrote this :

You too can hear/see OUR PACIFICA REPORT ON YOUTUBE (audio only) A subscriber put our show with Pacifica Executive Director Summer Reese on youtube - just the audio, but it makes it EZ to share. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA2bvAYbOxg&feature

CPB is discontinuing funding for KPFK because of low audience rates here. wow ! sad.

Two KPFK staffers who are anti-the-currently-hired-executive-director because of fear they will lose their jobs at station are Alan Minsky and Ian Masters. Masters has sent out a petition against Reese and and uses insulting language and makes inappropriate references in describing her, both in writing and on air.

The difference of opinions and concerns is acceptable of course. But the name-calling and demeanments show other poor attitudes and intentions, unfortunately, as these staffers also do work at KPFK that has been appreciated by many. The way to get anyone's ways should be more courteous, honest, decent and not using negative labeling or name-calling, whoever it is that is of concern. Bad mean behavior reflects on those doing the insulting more than on whom it is intended to discredit.

more pertinent info as it emerges.

Can this be reposted elsewhere as some have better access to other sites than these one ? ”

Kind of confusing

by nobody Monday, Mar. 31, 2014 at 12:17 AM

I listened to the show, and it was confusing.

Is there a written article with some information?

It sounds like she's saying that some of the board members were not really elected. That's a serious charge. As it stands, if the board really is legitimate, then she has been fired. According to the link below, the vote was 11-7 to fire her. That's four votes in favor of her being terminated. So are four members really not members? I find that hard to believe..

The other thing I don't get is whether it's possible to move forward after this conflict.

Yes, confusing, but the most disclosive info yet

by kpfk loyal volunteer Monday, Mar. 31, 2014 at 11:50 AM

Nobody above here commented & responds with appropriate confusion, as there are 2 totally versions of what happened and who is in what position legitimately, or not. But then, let's look at who is saying what and why.

the KPFK audio version [shared above] was the version that wanted to hear it from the main actual source in dispute - Summer Reese - when everyone else is stationed elsewhere, quoting everyone else but her and claiming that their Holy Truth is only on their side and in their selected friends. Searching for weeks for more actual factual info on line has been mostly fruitless with Reese as an actual source being not heard or writing in places easily found, at least not by this writer, having search long and hard.

That was the benefit of this audio, that may need someone dedicated to typing up the info in text form and notifying the rest of us where it is available to READ instead, which is way to dissect and carefully scrutinize what is orally said.

Confusion ?
of course, because like any fighting over a valued property or title, as is always done in any other political presidential / government/ corporate races or fighting over who rules in kingdoms of the past, is a wildly dramatic and accusatory oppositional theatrical affair. Always with vile gossip included in accusations and much heralding of the evilness of the 'other'. [see all national folklores, shakespere, and historical dramas, novels.]

There appear to be 3 main groupies at play now , but there could be more, less visible ones to an ordinary subscriber reader [on line or on-air listener].

The ones that want to continue to validate the prior PNB board voting and signing of an employment contract of Summer Reese, whom they had seen and worked with for a few years and seen her ED work for many months in 2013.

Then the ones who want to take over the whole PNB with their new version of what is legal or convenient - and these seem affiliated to KPFA. their LSB or staffers in Berkeley - and want to get Wilkerson in top place instead. =Two top fighters for who is ED of Pacifica.

And then there are the ones who are worried about their paid staff positions and friends at KPFK [Ian Masters who also put out his online petition, and Alan Minsky, a long time interim program director, and their allies. – This group seems to want to slant KPFK and it’s affiliates in only 1 direction – theirs – only - and hate-on to eliminate any other versions of what is also important to air about this topsy turvy world, i. e. programs on 911 events, or what is labeled as “spirituality” by some or even including Gary Null and his versions.]

at the old slanted still save pacifica site, [that is very biased on it’s own sided version ] claiming The Truth, theirs, of course, as if there were no other versions, nor visions, nor views…..they give fancy quotes as “said Pacifica chair Margy Wilkinson, “ as if she was fair and non-biased in whatever is her stated position…and not mentioning her intent to become the Exe Dir herself !

and later that savepacifica site [that has done nothing to save anyone but they too put out their own views and alliances mostly] states :

” Reuters confirms that Reese was fired by the Pacifica National Board on March 13 by a vote of 11 to 7. The board has declined to comment on the matter, citing employment confidentiality concerns, but PNB chair Wilkinson [yes, again who is claimed to be the Authority on this fighting ] told Reuters, “I think [Reese's] response since she has been terminated totally validates the decision to terminate her,.. “

as if - Wilkinson had no stakes, benefits, nor own ambitions in this matter.

Who do we think gives fair honest unbiased factual information anyhow ?

Those who are going to benefit the most or those most involved in that fight ?

or others who can view the scene with better perspectives and who may report more than the 1 strongly-slanted-version-Only ? And of course, all seem to have their own Petition, to enhance and gain their sided friends and cronies.

and another obviously biased quote in that site: ““Who knows what mischief Reese and her supporters are up…” said a volunteer programmer [who is not noted to have staff or special status capacities anywhere ] is indicating clear bias-sidedness against the elected Exe Director [the one, Reese, who served before as interim ED for many months last year too - and was not terminated then - so why suddenly when her position was made effective instead of interim did the big blow out occur ? ]

Confusing but in need of transparency, sharing all info for each to further inspect, read critically, question and discuss before claiming to KNOW and report any new truths.

It may bear listening to more than once if this is all that is available for the time...until a volunteer typist helps us out and refers us to a readable version of what Reese does explain and reply to questioning both by KPFK staffers and callers/ listeners also.

corporate_controlled__media_dumbing_down.jpg, image/jpeg, 400x267

You know they say listening to underwritten media dumbs down the audience, and unfortunately this appears to be true even with corporate controlled commodified 'community' media as well.

I've yet to see any published story about any Pacifica controlled station [on here] written in clear prose.

If I talked this way on-air the other stations would make fun of me.

Surely there's other 'loyal listeners' that have better command of the English language..

If not, I fear for the future of corporate controlled commodified 'community' media (actually I do anyway)

not good enough to read here ?

by what ? who ? why ? Monday, Mar. 31, 2014 at 12:23 PM

if nothing else can be criticized, then claim spelling or poor grammar or poor writing or whatever can be niggled - by those who want to find fault and claim superiority here - as they like to criticize any way possible.

No claim to perfection is made or required to write on any blog, site.
Not all claim to have to write to the standards 1 reader claims to require as if crazy can set standards for anything anywhere.

so why keep demeaning writers he doesnt like what they say?
why is the powerful-feeling-of-being-wrigt ovr anyon else so impoortant to some who enjoy showing offfff on this site ? duhuh?

- in fact it's worse than even you seem to be aware of.

I follow national trends and this is happening everywhere, because the channels themselves have been commodified non-underwritten non-profit stations of all sorts are under financial pressure to give up their channel slots to profit orientated operations, and the creation of bloated corrupt board of directors and program directors with corporate agendas, the resultant infighting, the conflicts of interests and all the other pressures are a direct result of this.

It's happening everywhere nationwide..

Explaining this in opaque terms with spelling and grammar errors however, doesn't help your case.

12-10 voted firing on phone

by acute listener Wednesday, Apr. 02, 2014 at 1:39 PM

Listening a 2nd time to the audio of article above, it was stated by Reese in response to another's question that there are 22 Pacifica Fdtn Board members,... that the vote was done over the phone with no agenda item for preparation so it was an 'ambush' for those unaware of the agenda not declared equally openly to all.

Of the 22, 12 voted for firing and 10 not.

There are 4 LSB members from ea station that are voted on by their board [not the area sponsors/ public members, who have no input to anything ever after the LSB members grab their spot ] and 2 from the affiliate. 4x5=20+2=22 PNB members.

When listening, notice the difference between titles that can be confusing:" Executive Director of Pacifica Fdtn" = who holds the licenses for ea of 5 stations, vs. the "Director of the Pacifica National Board"...2 different positions that when people talk quickly and lower their voices in conversations on phone is easy to mix up.

Summer Reese said she had been on PNB for more years and then worked as 'interim ED" for something like 8 months before being hired, after being 'thoroughly vetted.....contacted jobs I had been in 20 years ago ..." and that no one had given reasons, or prior directive, disciplining her or informing her of poor work or whatever the issues some 'feel' are of concern.

The apparent electing new members to the PNB allowed the firing that may be illegal because a new board cannot dispense with the decisions, hirings, actions of prior PNB boards just without serious documented reasons. So the story was heard on 2nd review.

The confusion in hearing this 2 hour long interview with 2 KPFK staffers seriously concerned and supportive of Ms. Reese and with 3am KPFK listener callers putting in their opinions on air could also be because each speaker would begin -as if a radio announcer/reporter - and then drop their voice in rapid speech as if we all were in the room picking up all the other cues in ordinary conversations. So important information could be missed or ignored because of the effort to LISTEN to those who were 'conversing' rather than doing Radio On Air talk. Too bad.

Any one interested can probably skip over parts that seem difficult to hear clearly or bore then and still gain the main points of agreement or disagreement or QUESTIONS that SHOULD BE ASKED directly -

to KPFK.org general manager or Roy Tuckman [ in whose program this interview was included by his choice, not by any one else's directive, apparently, as he said on air ].

[a question occurs that if the new Interim Gen'l Mgr is from KPFA, who side is he on, if biased - because the opposition group are KPFA LSB and staff members. Is he neutral as he must/ should be at KPFK or not is unknown so far .And he had also been on KPFA's board a long time.]

questions can be addressed also to the KPFA LSB board, or it's director [the one contending and claiming to replace Ms. Reese - tho the legalities of this have not been confirmed ].

Or to the KPFK LSB local board here WHO SHOULD BE INFORMING US ALL IN L.A. of what is happening but is playing safe and secretive by giving payers in L.A. no information, no clarification, no transparency, and did not do so when asked directly a few months ago at their official meeting. A strange and unfriendly group and exclusive, tho not representing anyone but their own single selves, from anything a KPFK LSB member has ever said aloud there.

Thanks.

Programmatically, I guess I'd side mostly with the Master/Minsky boring progressives, but administratively, I side with anyone who isn't a crook, and can get the stations building a progressive audience again.

there is room for such variety, why be limited ?

by kpfk loyal volunteer Thursday, Apr. 03, 2014 at 11:30 AM

nobody - I agree that I too listen and like Ian Master's programs and have numerous times complimented Alan Minsky to his boss, to him, etc. about his doing a good job as program director [especially after the awful previous one that was limited, biased, withholding and opaque in all ways except his size ]. But that does not ever mean I only want these guys' input !

Repeatedly both I and a few others have publicly exclaimed at LSB meetings that the original intent and mission is not to be exclusive or limited in viewpoints presented on KPFK. Whenever an LSB member or public person at LSB meetings declares they want whatever exclusively and then proudly claim they can exclude those they dont happen to agree with, we repeat our refrain that there is room for all and we Want To Hear the Other, the opposing, and the Difficult to understand or agree with viewpoints as well.

There are many programs I dont like on KPFK. But only a few I cannot stand to listen to more than 2 x. Most are not to my liking and if I had power, I would limit the times they are on air, but never exclude any, because how do we know what is in their minds ? And how to be able to either respond, or find a few points we may agree upon anyhow, or how can we live in this world alongside each other …. instead of go to war and kill off all those we don’t like, or want to see or hear…because they are not are 'just like us' ??????

So tho a few want to hear more than what we enjoy - to LEARN from them - find out where they are coming from and where they want to go - - and like extremist religionists, or politicians or those so ambitious to want to win it Allllllll and leave no crumbs for anyone else but their own - - some of us disagree with most limitations.

that is what is INTOLERANCE = the not letting others too fairly express their own views, desires, plans - even their twisted versions of what we may know to be untrue as we have experienced it - and not just 'thought' about it. Like all insects, animals, rocks and aspects of the nature that we are also just a part of too, coexistence is the most productive and fascinating

Sometimes there are periods when KPFK is avoided altogether , because of their repetitiousness, or the same themes shouted or pushed hard on to listeners. We can then turn it off and go elsewhere, maybe later to return to see if reason and variety and creativity has returned, or not. How fortunate we are in urban LA to have so many choices, most of which each of us cannot listen to for long. So we need KPFK as an Alternate. Not even the main feed.

To want it all - for any one-sided point of view - is selfish, self-righteous and deluded. To share and cooperate however we dislike or disagree is the more civilized way to live, Especially in L.A. Especially when the 'others' also gain influence and power, temporarily maybe, and everything here needs to be understood, to be tolerated or even accepted, sometimes.

When you look beyond IMC being a grantee of the ford foundation and see how ford funds 'social justice' organisations across the political spectrum.

They're 'stirring the pot' in other words.

The distraction of all this noise deflects attention from the fact that their own funders are the people responsible for the problems these media holdings pretend to care about.

Pacifica, corporation for public broadcasting (NPR - national petroleum radio), democracy now, Center for American Progress Action Fund, the Tides Foundation, the Bauman Foundation, the Cloud Mountain Foundation, # Craigslist Charitable Fund
the Drug Policy Alliance, the Elias Foundation, the Four Freedoms Fund, the Funding Exchange (Donor Advised), the Glaser Progress Foundation, the LP Brown Foundation, the Madison Community Foundation, the Panta Rhea Foundation, the Park Foundation, the Roseben Fund, the RSF Social Finance Foundation, and so on.

IMC also has a program at night on KPFK, but do they expose and reveal what all is written of concern here at their site ? dunno

a little humor helps when all the words are informative but depressing also.

so yes, the liberals are far from liberated from their own chosen tightly held Righteous position. Most often they are more strict and stuck in their thoughts and opinions than what are so-called "independents' but all name-calling is misleading as each will say, "yes, but I am not one of Those ! "

wow, is this all actual and intertwined so incestuously?

by acute listener Friday, Apr. 04, 2014 at 12:11 PM

Wow. an amazing find and research from crazy inventor above. We always assume if someone else did the work that we cant or wont do to find out 'the facts' then they must be [maybe] true too. True as in ‘fact’ that allows no questioning nor dispute nor discussion….until other facts emerge …maybe…

Either way, the top line with the USA govt ruling the houses of monies, makes the lines downward seem like all us taxpayers are indebted to all who take their money to create 'another side too', as only 2 are allowed, apparently ? Left OR right ? Good OR bad ? nothing inbetween.

thanks for this surprise –

but is it then assumed, that those who own it all are carefully not making themselves out to be targets of bad publicity ? nor for the funders to be seen as also corrupting those outlets they “like less” ? The intertwining makes the pix look like a H. Giger artwork without the obvious sexual references. But it surely is all included incestuously anyhow.

when we pay taxes, to USA Fed Government, as required, does that mean we too are funding all thaaaat ????”
