On the second floor of Murphy Hall, in the campus of UCLA, 200 students are sitting outside the Chancellor's office demanding to be heard. About 600 students first gathered at noon and marched around campus before filing into Murphy Hall. Once inside, the students sat in the hallway outside the Chancellor's office, demanding to present their list of reforms directly to the Chancellor. The temperature in the hallway rose into the 90s and some students left, around 200 remain. The Chancellor's office door is guarded by five police who have not been aggressive towards the student protesters.
People are being encouraged to call the Chancellor's office to meet with the students

This photo taken at 2:20 pm shows the scale of the sit in. A head count of this photo nets about 75. And there were at least as many people behind the camera at the time. Also many people came and went throughout the 5 hour long sit-in. So estimates of 150 to 200 people are reasonable. There were also many outside supporters who brought in water and food.
About 4 legal observers from the National Lawyers Guild were present for the duration. Students were at all times peaceful and no laws were broken by any of the students.
However the police committed several fire/life safety infractions by blocking exit stairs and fire egress routes and as per usual prevented the people's access to submit a "redress of grievances” a first amendment violation.
There was one bathroom in hallway where the students staged their sit-in. The students declared the bathroom gender neutral. Personal privacy was respected and no gender conflicts were observed during the shared use of the bathroom.

Sit-ins and occupations offer more than simple demonstrations, they create opportunities to discover what the new world might look like. By taking and holding a space, even for short time, we can start to practice the communal values we are fighting for.
Ridge ideas about gender identity and gender segregation are thought by many to be one of the root causes of sexism, homophobia and transphobia.
Many people take the idea of separate bathrooms for granted. For many people the very idea of unisex facilities seems unthinkable, even immoral. However in the history of human societies worldwide it is only relatively recently that it has become common practice.
