On the five-year anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the corner of York and Figueroa was crowded with demonstrators (at one point, 45 people were counted).

Highland Park, March 19: As part of MoveOn’s call for protest on the five-year anniversary of America’s invasion of Iraq, about 45 people stood at the Veteran’s Memorial at York and Figueroa. The vigilers included a veteran, who suggested to another participant that they turn their U.S. flag upside down. The veteran also spoke of the lack of support for vets by the government. The ages of the demonstrators ranged from young children to elders. There was widespread enthusiastic response from motorists.

America's enemies are always looking for signs of US weakness. Thanks to the anti-American left, they can always find examples.

Just who the hell are you calling anti-American, you idiot. One of you worthless pro-war morons? Grab a rifle and buy a ticket to Bagdad. Then you can give your mouth a rest. Are the only ones who support this war as inane as this?

This country was founded on dissent. It's the lack of critical thinking and ignorance that are among America's major weaknesses. (I don't lump you in this category because at least you have opinions. It's frightening how many Americans have no opinions whatsoever.)
Democracy doesn't work if people aren't engaged--and they have to engage more than every four years at election time.
The policies that have led to this economic mess, the wholesale loss of lives in Iraq, and the polarization that we're experiencing in the U.S. were instigated under a Republican presidency and a Republican-controlled senate/congress (with the complicity of Democrats).

Last week's Winter Soldier reinforced that--and then, of course, we have under our belts the genocide of this entire continent, slavery and the associated atrocities, and the crimes against humanity that we export around the world. The Nazis were local. We're global.
