Fallen soldier with ‘craziest laugh’ honored by comrades
By Ben Murray, Stars and Stripes Mideast edition, Monday, October 9, 2006
FORWARD OPERATING BASE McHENRY, Iraq — It was a goofy, infectious laugh, so strange and arresting it almost sounded cartoonish.
It started out small and built to a high-pitched crescendo so uniquely odd that at times people thought he was faking it. But it was unmistakable, soldiers said, and it made others laugh, too.
“It was like a hiss, then it just generated into a full-blown I don’t know what,” said Pfc. Justin Joiner, of Headquarters and Headquarters Company for the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment
It was the laugh of Staff Sgt. Daniel Isshak, a man known for his humor, grit and compassion among fellow members of the 2-27 Infantry, who remembered him in a memorial ceremony Saturday at this small, remote base southwest of Kirkuk. On Tuesday, Isshak was shot and killed in the city of Hawijah when his convoy suffered a grenade attack and he dismounted to secure the area.
For his actions in combat that day, he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
As a Muslim of Russian heritage who spoke fluent Arabic, the 25-year-old from Alta Loma, Calif., was a distinctive soldier who was easygoing in his off time, but completely squared away when his uniform was on, soldiers said.
“He was two different guys,” said Sgt. Brad Fineberg, who worked with Isshak.
At work or play, he had a streak of single-minded tenacity that wouldn’t allow him to quit or back down no matter what the situation, soldiers said. Accomplished at grappling, he made it all the way to the 25th Infantry Division finals, where he was beaten only when he was strangled into unconsciousness, remembered Chaplain Charles Popov.
Later, Popov said he asked Isshak why he hadn’t tapped out to end the match once it became hopeless. “His response was simply, ‘I don’t tap out, sir,’” Popov said.
Isshak wasn’t particularly large or strong, but it was that hard edge that made him a good grappler and a good soldier, Joiner said.
“He was mean as hell, is what it was,” he said. Joiner said the only other time he saw Isshak fall out was when the two tried to drink a bottle of tequila together and got through most if it before Isshak just dropped his head to the table and slept.
“I’ve seen him pass out, but I’ve never seen him quit,” Joiner said.
Isshak used that doggedness to get him through Ranger school after eight punishing months, and carried that attitude to the field. He was strict with his men, and went heavy on the physical training, one soldier said.
“He was [in communications], but it seemed like he had more infantry in him,” Joiner said.
When not on duty, however, Isshak was an everyman who liked to play his guitar and enjoyed acoustic music, Fineberg said.
The loss of Isshak was a tough blow for the more than 800 soldiers at FOB McHenry, who have had a violent start to their yearlong deployment here. Since arriving in mid-August, the 2-27 has lost five men to insurgent attacks.
But the danger didn’t demoralize Isshak, who wanted to be in the thick of things, soldiers said. “He loved his soldiers, he loved being out on patrol,” said Staff Sgt. Christopher Hooten. And, of course, “He had the craziest laugh.”

Thank you, DJ for keeping this in the LA IMC comment page. It seems to be the only Taps that are sounded for the public.
To gerhig @%< Does gerhig @%< have a major involvement in that grant friendly site? He seems to, in his friendly chats to the IMC staff. Can we be certain that any anti-zionist or disfavorable posts concerning israel will be given front page notice? Articles about newly discovered or perpetrated atrocities of the israeli state? hmmmmm, will all the weasels hit the delete button in unison?

I've seen non-racist anti-Zionist *wink-wink* material, both articles and comments, published there for a few years now going undeleted. Even making it to the front page at times. Hope this answers your query.
Just leave out the overt and covert (subtle) forms of antisemitism and you won't suffer undue editorial attention.

only "anti-zionists" ever say that any criticism of Israel is anti-semitism. Actual Zionists say thing like,"Of course its ok to have legitmate criticism of Israel and not be anti-semitic, look theres the Labor Party and Haaretz!"
Of course, when "anti-zionists' tell lies about Israel, post fake quotes from Israel's leaders etc etc, specifically in order to demonize the Jewish state etc, then often times the line is crossed, often right here. All "anti-zionsts' may not be anti-semites but for sure all anti-semites are anti-zionist.

Wars and such other tools of the overclass are constructed not merely for additional power and wealth but also to perform eugenics upon the human race in order to breed a race of Retrievers rather than wolves. The kennel masters, in keeping with their sloth, are also breeding a strain of self serving weasels who never are at risk in these conflicts, to maintain retriever training, while the wars operate by ' Culling the Character ' out of the lower classes. Character, meaning bravery, honesty, loyalty independent thought and love for their fellow brothers and sisters. These points of human behavior are impediments to absolute rule. What they need is self serving cowerdess and group acceptance.
Deny their pogrom. Support our [ HUMAN ] Race. Bring Them Home Now.

Thats a misuse of the word "Semite" which refers to a language group only not an ethnic origin. As to the ethnic origin of modern day, self identified "Palestinians", its quite broad and diverse, with elements of all the foreign invaders and others that have ever passd through that part of he world, Greek, Roman, Assyrian, Egyptian, Sudanese,Albanian etc etc.

There's something more interesting -- The Angry David Duke Supporter also says that Palestinians are REAL Semites. Does he think that Jews are not? If so, it's another point in which he agrees with the bizarre racial theories of David Duke.

Tuesday, October 10, 2006 Former Anaheim resident dies in Iraq Staff Sgt. Daniel Isshak was gunned down in Iraq. By SARAH TULLY The Orange County Register Barihan Isshak knew she couldn't call her son on his birthday. As a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, Daniel Isshak often was assigned to a place where she couldn't reach him, but he could contact her. When her son called on Sept. 26, Barihan Isshak was unaware he was in Iraq. As an only child, Daniel Isshak didn't want to worry his parents, so he never told them that he volunteered to ship out. About a week after his 25th birthday, the couple found out his whereabouts when an Army official rang the doorbell with news that their son had been killed. Isshak, a former Anaheim resident, died Oct. 3 after his vehicle came under enemy small-arms fire in Hawija, Iraq. Isshak was assigned to guard a colonel and was protecting him when he died, said Isshak's cousin, Sasha Maher. About 30 members of the armed forces from Orange County have died in fighting in the Mideast. More than 300 people attended Isshak's funeral and Muslim burial Saturday in Westminster Memorial Park, Maher said. Anaheim ties Isshak spent his childhood in Anaheim, where he attended Hansen Elementary School. After the family moved to Alta Loma in 1992, they stayed involved in the local Circassian community. Maher said about 1,000 Circassians – Muslims who originated from southern Russia – live in Orange County. Isshak took Circassian language and dance classes when he was a child and teenager, Maher said. When he got older, Isshak played ice hockey. Military decision At age 17, after graduating from high school, the usually obedient Isshak shocked his parents when he insisted that he was going to join the Army. "He said, 'Nobody fooled me. Nobody pushed me. Nobody is forcing me. This is what I want to do. With or without your blessing, I'm going to go. I'm going to join the U.S. Army,' " Barihan Isshak recalled. "I almost fell on the ground." His parents signed the paperwork for him to leave before his 18th birthday because they didn't want to drag out the wait. But his sudden departure weighed on them. "We were so sad. If anybody said, 'How's Danny?' we were torn to pieces," Barihan Isshak said. "I think I grieved for him back in July 1999." Going to Iraq Daniel Isshak spent most of his service in Fort Benning, Ga., as an Army Ranger. Isshak followed his roommates, Joel and Jessica Peterson, to a post in Hawaii. From there, he was assigned to Iraq, leaving Aug. 3. Jessica Peterson, whose husband served with Isshak and remains in Iraq, said Isshak likened the situation of going to medical school to become a surgeon but never performing surgery. He debated whether to tell his parents. "He didn't want them to worry about him," Peterson said. "It was a hard decision for him to make. He knew it was going to be really hard to keep it from them." During their birthday conversation, Isshak told his mother that he wanted to take a trip with his parents back East during a vacation in January. Barihan Isshak teased him about wanting to visit a girl in New Jersey. Barihan Isshak said she understands why her son declined to tell her where he was, and she's proud: "We know that's what he wanted. He loved what he was doing." "Daniel told me, 'No matter what happens, no matter where I go, Mom, don't cry. Don't be sad. Don't worry about it.'
