The city of Los Angeles is in the final stages of their effort to take the collective South Central Farm away from the community.

The South Central Farm project is located on 14 acres of land at 41st and Alameda Streets in the middle South Central Los Angeles. It has been used as a collective community farm and garden since 1992 and is one of the largest urban gardens in the United States.

The farm provides food-safety, open space, family activities and self relented to the community. It also feeds 350 families by providing fresh fruits and vegetables on daily basis. Each family has their own plot of land and grows the plants and food they choose.

Now the city of Los Angeles wants to turn the land over to developers who will destroy the farm and build warehouses.

Time is running out but there is still some hope.

There is less than 10 days to save the Farm. On Monday May 22, 2006, if the 16.3 million dollars needed to purchase the Fand from developer Ralph Horowitz is not acquired, the contractual agreement giving the farmers a stay on the land will go void.

Ralph Horowitz already has the eviction notice in hand!! On Monday May 22, he will ask the court to send the eviction to the L.A County Sheriffs Department so that they may execute the eviction. The farmers and community will have approximately 24 hours to vacate the farm and turn it over to Ralph Horowitz for its destruction and transformation into a possible Wal-mart or other mega corporation warehouse/distribution center.

Visit the SCF website to find out how you can help!

lovely pix; green gems beyond words

by problems with property ownership Wednesday, May. 17, 2006 at 7:46 PM

This community farm is an example of what LA needs in every neighborhood, a vision of the future as petroleum becomes scarce and local organic farms can provide needed nutritional sustainence for the people. The biodiversity of this farm is an example of what Vandana Shiva talks about with relation to food sovereignty providing better nutritional variety than monoculture plantations. Farmers at community farms are also treated better than agribusiness plantations, they can choose their own hours and are self reliant. There is so much good about this community farm, it is in my opinion worth dying for. sort of like "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee", one could say, "Bury My Heart at South Central Community Farm."..

Certain activists may consider the farm as being "to die for" a bit too radical. However, if the farm is destroyed and replaced with a warehouse, then what is there to live for? More asphalt parking lots, more smog, more asthma, lung cancer and inadequate nutrition for low income residents??

Clearcuts in forests, nuclear waste in deserts, military occupations everywhere, cyanide leached gold mines near rivers, and countless other brutal acts of imperialism here and overseas already fills my soul with burning hot rage. The last straw could be taking this life giving farm away from the community and replacing it with another drab gray dead warehouse..

This culture of death persists in driving people who care about humanity and the ecosystem over the edge. Imaginary concepts like property ownership force harsh conditions on those without financial resources. Who decided that real estate developer Ralph Horowitz is given ownership of this section of land, and who decides that the people who live and work on the farm need to come up with X amount of dollars to continue this farm's survival?

All this imaginary concept of property ownership is the "la Frontera" and other lines of divisions mapped out in the heads of Euro-american immigrants where certain individuals like Ralph Horowitz hold all the cards and everyone else slaves away in their shadow like so many lines of tiny ants..

The tiny ants like myself are getting tired of being stepped on by giant tyrants like Horowitz, Cheney, Bush, Schwarzenegger, etc...

What can one little ant do?

Seek Honesty

The public at large needs to know the truth!
Rufina Juarez and Tezozomoc threw out the original farmers over the past several years. Visit 111th Street and Avalon to talk to the original farmers. They will share their experience with you.
Where is the $$$$$$$$$$$ Juarez collected from the original farmers? They asked for records and she refused.
The people in the pictures are NOT the original farmers.

Where is $$$$$$?

by The Original South Central Farmers Tuesday, May. 30, 2006 at 1:11 AM

IS IT TRUE?
by Gayle Bronson Saturday, Jun. 03, 2006 at 2:46 AM

Is it true Rufina Juarez and Tezozomoc threw-out more than 250 original south central farmers?

No.. but
by Frank M Saturday, Jun. 03, 2006 at 4:18 AM

by the same token, is it true you work for the developer that wants to destroy the Farm, Ralph Horowitz.
Just thought I'd ask.

Response
by Gayle B. Saturday, Jun. 03, 2006 at 9:46 AM

No, I do not work for the developer. The reason for the question is because the original farmers have a original map of the farm plots that were destroyed by the leadership when they were thrown out.
Have you seen the map?

Questions
by Sandwich Repairman Saturday, Jun. 03, 2006 at 2:08 PM

What were the conditions that led to the farmers not protesting the original sale of the land to private owners in the mid-90s?
What happens to the donations raised if it's not enough to buy the farm?
Truthout reported that the farmers have $9 million, and I see claims that the Mayor promised $5 million--was that to make up the difference so the farmers could buy the land?
What does Horowitz want to do with the land? Would he be open to rooftop gardens on buildings?
I think urban community gardens are extremely important as we enter the era of peak oil. Food that has to be transported thousands of miles by truck is going to become extremely expensive. This food doesn't really have to be transported at all, saving money and energy. That it also provides cheap food to low-income families, creates a space where community can thrive, and helps mitigate air pollution and greenhouse gases (thus slowing down global warming) are other major benefits not to be overlooked. If anything, it seems to me the government, at whatever level, should be helping these farmers grow a surplus of food they could profit from, and potentially use to expand.

I thought they protested
by !! Saturday, Jun. 03, 2006 at 7:18 PM

I thought they protested this latest sale, and it was conducted via a private negotiation with the City. Prior attempts to buy the land were rejected by the City Council. So I guess the public didn't ever want to sell the land to H, and the City Council was ok with that, but the City itself was motivated to sell it.

More Questions?

Why were the original farmers expelled from 41st and Alameda?
Have you visited the 111th street and Avalon farm in Watts, CA?
Where is the money that was raised by Rufina Juarez and Tezozomoc (aka Esteban Torres Guzman)?
Have you seen the original map of the SCF? The map show Rufina Juarez started at SCF in 2003.
Is it true she works for MTA? (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) If so, how can she claim she is socialist?
Many have seen the original map of the SCF plots that were destroyed. It is horrible the original farmers were thrown out. It seems there is definitely a conflict the public needs to learn about before supporting 41st and Alameda garden.

Movie Stars Help The Wrong Cause
by Real Activist Sunday, Jun. 04, 2006 at 9:27 AM

Just north of 41st and Alameda in downtown Los Angeles, near the streets of San Pedro, 5th, 6th, Winston, Wall and Crocker, you will find 1000's upon 1,000's of homeless children, youth, mothers, fathers, famililes, men and women living in the streets of downtown Los Angeles' Skid Row.
The homeless people of Los Angeles need food, shelter, jobs, medical services, mental health services and people to advocate for them and their children.
The movie stars should advocate to raise 16.3 million dollars to help the homless of Los Angeles' Skid Row. Movie Stars should rally in support of the homeless epidemic downtown and not a despotic leadership that has thrown out over 300 families.
The bottom line the ritzy who live in the Downtown Lofts want the homeless people out of Skid Row. Some of these people living in the lofts work for the the movie industry. Let's get the priorites straight.
