During a conference at the Biltmore Hotel this morning Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was interrupted mid speech by protestors bringing light on the mayors lack of action to support the South Central Farm. “If you care about oppressed communities so much, and you care about making LA green, why aren’t you working to save the South Central Farm?“, one protestor shouted as Villaraigosa
was speaking. Then a half-dozen people unraveled a banner that read: “Feed Families: Fight Greed”. The mayor has publicly spoken in favor of the farm, but has yet to day to have taken any concrete actions to save it. In a recent press conference he even went so far as to ask residents of Los Angeles to privately donate 15 million dollars to his office as a way to buy the farm. As the protestors were escorted out of the building, they chanted, “Food not Warehouses, Save the Farm!” There were no arrests.
I got to the demo pretty late, and had a hard time finding parking. There were around 100 people there, maybe more. Overall, a good turnout considering it was a weekday. After marching and chanting, the crowd entered City Hall, for speeches. (I stayed outside, becuase my time was limited.)
There's a benefit at the farm on the 28th, all day, donation. It looks good, with participation from Project Blowed and others.
People are camping there at night.
Organizing meetings are on Sunday.
Here's an idea for the mayor. Maybe he can use it when he's running for governor or whatever he's aiming for. I heard the topic of discussion at the press conference was asthma. So here's a green idea.
Take all the homes near the freeways, and get rid of them. Pay for new homes or some kind of permanent apartments for the people displaced. Pay for it via gasoline taxes.
Freeways are one of the main causes, if not the main cause, of widespread asthma and respiratory disease. I bet it's also a leading cause of lead poisoning and cancer too. I benefit from them but, don't pay the costs of people who get screwed over.
