The San Gabriel Valley Tribune printed an article about the so-called "Friends of the Border Patrol" which didn't address the salient issues.
http://www.sgvtribune.com/news/ci_3257905 Activists might consider sending a note to Ruby Gonzales, the author of the article at ruby.gonzales@sgvn.com or telephone to speak with him at (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2718 to express your opinions. Nothing in the article even touches upon the alleged intermixing of individuals with known alleged white supremacists groups, nor is there any mention of the self-proclaimed "Save Our State," "Minutemen," "National Alliance," "National Vanguard," or "Storm Front." The article's author attempts to paint these "Friends of the Border Patrol" as if they were good, model, upright citizens and as if their names and photographs haven't been allegedly tracked and exposed by anti-hate activists on la.indymedia.org and sandiego.indymedia.org from time to time. It's important to underscore the fact that many -- or maybe even most -- of the "Friends of the Border Patrol" and "Save Our State" and "Minutemen" honestly don't believe they share the same ideologies as their more blatant colleagues who self-identify as "National Alliance," "National Vanguard," and "Storm Front." But it's irresponsible not to mention the alleged mixing and what appears to be the virtually incestious cross polination, the Nazi and Confederate flags being waved on street corners and sidewalks, and the photographs that show these individuals standing side by side, shoulder to shoulder even as some of them -- maybe even most of them -- demand the others are "uninvited." http://www.sgvtribune.com/news/ci_3257905 My opinions only and only my opinions -- and my opinions may be inaccurate or even wrong. Use your own head and commen sense, as always, when evaluating who these people are and what they actually stand for. Don't take mine or anybody else's opinions for granted.

There are a couple serious problems with the article "Friends of Bortder Patrol combat foes" by Ruby Gonzales
First, Ramirez denies that his group contains racists. The writer did not mention that this accusation comes about primarily because the National Alliance, a racist group, has been active in these border watch events. This omission is inexcusable, because members of that group or National Vanguard, and other self-described "white nationalists" have participated in anti-immigrant demonstrations in the San Gabriel Valley.
Second, Bill King is quoted refuting Morones' statment that Ron Prince is in charge of the FOBP group. King's statement should not have made the paper at all, because Ron Prince's involvement with FOBP is documented right on their website. Prince was tapped to be Chairman of the FOBP by Ramirez. A simple web search of "Prince" and the organization's name would have turned this fact up.
This is a major error on the part of the SGVTrib, because it was used to discredit Morones, an activist who opposes FOBP. In fact, if anyone should have been discredited, it's Bill King, who probably lied.
(Article is quoted below.) > Bill King, the former chief Border Patrol Agent and co-founder of Proposition 187, is troubled by Morones' allegations. As far as he knows, Prince isn't part of Friends of the Border Patrol. > > "They're dead wrong and they should get a life," King said.
See... actually, they're completely correct, and King is probably lying.

Either the SGVTribune didn't do their homework or they decided to be dishonest in their coverage.

I believe Fred is very much in favor of borders, but is against racism. I'm basically against borders, but that's more of an ideological stance. Practically, I think that bill Kennedy was proposing a few months ago is reasonable.
Without immigration, this country would be in decline. (Any country, would be, really.)

> Just wondering if in eithyer of your learned opinions > its even POSSIBLE to be in support of a closed or at > least tightly secured border
I'm completely for "tightly controlled borders." My web site says as much.
What I'm opposed to is racist hatred and white supremacisy in all its forms.
I used to think that illegal Mexicans caused much of the economic problems here in Southern California and my web site enumerated all the usual topics: emergency rooms, hospitals, shool rooms, welfare, tax cheats, all the usual topics.
But the facts debunked my preconceived notions so I discarded them -- and corrected my web site.
The problems we have in Southern California are caused by our politicians, every one of which is a criminal. The name of their political Party is irrelevent: they're all criminals. That's why California is the way it is, not because of some brown people who white Christian males love to hate.
Hope that answers your question.

An orange, placed in a bushel of apples, does not turn the apples to oranges.
I have strived my lifetime to avoid being a racist or a white supremist. I grew up in, in SGV, and saw the Watts riots unfold on TV. I attended most of my school years with "Mexicans". In my sixth grade, i first saw blacks on campus and witnessed one black kid call another by the "N-word". I moved to North San Diego County, in the mid-1960's and became aware of Tom Metzger and the KKK. I joined the US Navy in the early 1970s, and faced the remnants of racism and separatism, as those ideals were on their exit of our society. I met a black man, who was culturally different than I, and I learned from the experience. I spent 20-years learning about humanity, tolerance, women's liberation, and sexual harrassement. I have lived 2-to-15 miles from the border. I have visited the area and seen the divide between the cultures and economies. I have seen illegals running through residential streets at 2:00am, while an unsuspecting neighborhood, slept. In 1992, rejoined the civilian population, and began to see how the American Culture had changed. I heard of the MMP about a year ago, but could not attend the Arizona events. My first event with SOS was in Fallbrook, coincidently the home of Tom Metzger and WAR. I got there late, at 11:15, and had 45-minutes until the end. I stood there with the SOS/MM group, and met Jim Gilchrist, and James Chase. As the rally was about to end, I went toward my vehicle, and I noticed two white-men sitting in a truck, in the parking lot. Something was odd, as I thought they were with the SOS/MM. I now believe they were lookouts for the KKK, since I heard Tom Metzger popped after the SOS/MM, departed at the 12:00 closure.
I have since participated with SOS, MM, CAMM, at some of their events. I have grown to know some of them, and I trust some. Trust is earned. I will continue to seek out racists, and nazis, etc. You should alsom strive to clean your own house, and choose to associate, or distance yourself accordingly.
When I go to the SBD rally, I will probaly see all the support and participation, that LA Indy and SD Indy could draw. I have no doubt, I will see racists, and Brown Nazis across the street, from the SOS/MM group.
If this is an effort to shut down the Day Labor site, then I welcome all of the help you can provide. However, we should try to offer some education to the employers about the laws, and legal options for finding eligible workers to do the work. The illegal immigrants can go back to their troubled governments and failing economies, and fix their homelands. I have enough problems finding a job here.

(The reporter responded to my note, and I replied with the following information. I am not posting her reply, but you can guess at least the part to which I'm responding.)
--------------------------------------- King and Morones are entitled to their opinions, but your readers are entitled to accurate facts, and information about the context.
King said Prince wasn't involved with FOBP. The fact is, Prince was involved with FOBP, and King made an error.
Given that there was some contention about the issue and a few paragraphs were devoted to it, the SGV Trib should have checked it.
An LA Times article from 1996 (McDonnell and Fineman) includes this paragraph:
From a different perspective, many activists organized against illegal immigration look warily on the prospect of millions of people from Mexico attaining dual citizenship. Ron Prince, a key architect of Proposition 187, unsuccessfully attempted to place a measure on the California ballot this year condemning the dual-nationality process. "I don't know how anybody can be expected to maintain true faith and allegiance to the United States if they are still considered nationals of another country," said Bill King, a former U.S. Border Patrol chief who helped craft Proposition 187 and now heads an Orange County-based group called Americans for Responsible Immigration.
So, King and Prince worked together on 187. Now, they're both linked to Ramirez and FOBP.
Regards,
John

Funny how I actually had to be in the Gilchrist campaign of all places to find these things out firsthand. Difficult in that I've been through quite a bit. Yes easy in that I didn't even mean to come to this realization. I actually believed in the campaign until now. Well, I guess it goes with my preference to see and experience things rather than just read about them. Maybe I should take up hiking and camping.

Gentlemen, I saw this message thread tonight and felt compelled to include a copy of my response to the gentleman who sent me a missive about the article. There is also a secondary e-mail I sent to him which I will post once I find it. I didn't receive a reply to that e-mail however. Some people say our paper is right wing, some others call us a liberal rag. I suppose it depends on what perspective they are coming from. I don't take sides in stories. I am not trying to curry favor by saying that. I just wanted to make that crystal clear. Sincerely, Ruby Gonzales Here is the e-mail: Dear Sir, Per your request, I am forwarding your letter to the Letters to the Editor. Mr. Ramirez denied throughout the interview that his group includes racists. And yes, I have seen their Web site. Mr. Morones said several people in the different groups who do the civilan border patrols are racists and he also thinks one group, not Mr. Ramirez', is responsible for several deaths. However, he cannot back that latter charge with direct proof. But Mr. Morones is entitled to his opinion as Mr. King is entitled to his.
