Join ANSWER, LASSO, and others on Tuesday Dec 30, 6 AM in an action supporting grocery strikers
Some may engage in civil disobedience to block the trucks.
(Vons trucks generally load up at 6 AM hence the early time)
JOINT COMMUNITY SUPPORT ACTION FOR GROCERY STRIKERS!
COME TO THE WAREHOUSE IN EL MONTE ON TUESDAY MORNING!
Community Action to Support Labor (CAPSL is a project of the ANSWER Coalition) is joining with the Los Angeles Striker Solidarity Organization (LASSO) and other community organizations in a grocery strikers support action on Tuesday, December 30th at 6 am. YES, THAT'S RIGHT. WE SAID 6 AM!
Since the bosses rejected a very generous offer by the UFCW in the last round of negotiations, the picketing at four warehouses that deliver food to Vons has become much more important. Many of the Vons trucks load up at the El Monte warehouse beginning at 6 in the morning. The workers there have been doing a great job, but on Tuesday morning we want to strengthen that picket line with as much community support as we can bring.
Some activists plan to participate in an attempt to block the trucks, knowing that there may be arrests. The National Lawyers Guild will be on hand to give people an orientation. Others will simply stay in the picket line and not participate in that part of the action. Those who don't want to be arrested are still very much needed to show how much community support this strike has.
HOW TO GET THERE: Vons Distribution Center 4300 Shirley Street El Monte, Ca. (at Gidley St -- one block east of Baldwin Ave between Valley Blvd and Lower Azusa St)
Directions: From the 10, exit Baldwin North. Take Baldwin North to Gidley St, turn right. Go one block. You'll see it.

Is it time for civil disobedience already? Well I guess assaulting scabs and replacement truck drivers won't be that far behind. Grocery workers no longer have the interest of the general public, espcially after lying about having a deal with Ralphs stores to try and shake things up between the big 3. First comes the lies, then the disobedience, then the violence. Hundreds of thousands of people are out of work in this country and you decide to strike for a few nickels from your already exorbitant salaries? And you wonder why no one takes you seriously? You wonder why people continue to shop at your former places of business? Reality check: You work in a grocery store! If you make $19 an hour and $54 an hour on holidays, how am I supposed to feel sorry for you? There are some poeple who would kill for those kinds of wages, so they could feed and clothe their children and take care of their families. You should be ashamed. You lost the interest of the public when you lied. Now please hurry up and get violent, because I'd like to see the cops take you down.

The deadline is midnight on Jan 1, 2004. At that time the contracts are expired. Strikers loose all their health insurance. And, the stores are free to fire strikers and hire replacements. The stores can legally fire all the strikers, then offer them their old jobs back as new hires with less pay and less benefits. Think before you loose it all, comrades.
