There were an estimated 200,000 protesters in London to protest Bush, and Blair’s war in Iraq. They carried signs, and chanted slogans to protest Bush’s
visit to London.
Many of the protesters carried signs with the word Bush covered with red ink that looked like blood. As the bronze statue of Bush was pulled down in Trafalgar
Square the--which parodied Hussein’s statue being toppled--the crowd went hysterical in support.
The growing casualties, and worsening terrorism in Iraq have convinced many that the invasion of Iraq was a mistake, and a failure. The failure to find any WMD, and yellowcake gate scandal have also worsened public opinion in Britain.
In other developments, it appears that al Qaeda struck again in Istanbul, by bombing the British Consulate, and a British bank. There were at least 27
people killed in the bombing, including the British Consulate. Another 450 people were wounded during the terrorist attack.
There were some some vans that pulled up in front of the high rise bank with explosive devices on board. The British Banks high rise structure was devastated by the blast, and local citizens wandered around the area after the explosion, many with blood on their faces.
There was also another massive Seattle style protest in Miami today, against the formation of a free trade pact—the protesters say will cost Americans jobs.
Thousands of protesters rallied against free trade, and the AFL-CIO had a lot of workers demonstrating at the marches.
The level of protests are increasing in London, and Miami. It appears, that Bush, and Blair have created a lot of opposition, as a result of the Iraq War, and
support for free trade regimes.
Out, out brief war monger!
Life is but a walking invader,
A rich player, that struts and frets
Its hour upon other countries
And is heard no more.
It is a tale told about an idiot
Full of sound and fury
Signifying empire.
The boys over in Scotland yard are baffled, they reckon the crowd was only about 70,000. Where did the extra 130,000 invisible protestors come from?
Fewer people than expected showed up for "antiwar" protests in London today; the Associated Press reports the count was "at least 50,000," well below the 100,000 organizers had predicted. There was a mob of people carrying signs saying, among other things, "World's #1 Terrorist"--a reference not to Osama bin Laden but to George W. Bush. Other placards had the name BUSH in big black letters against a red-blotch background suggesting spattered blood. Another photo shows a protester wearing "face paint" depicting the president as a vampire, including red paint around the mouth.
Maybe the 50,000 no-shows were shamed by the real blood their fellow anti-Americans spilled earlier in the day in Istanbul. CNN reports the death toll is 27 in a pair of suicide car-bombings against British targets: the consulate and the HSBC bank. Among the dead are Consul General Roger Short; at least 450 people are wounded. A caller claimed "joint responsibility" on behalf of al Qaeda and a Turkish terror outfit called the Great Eastern Islamic Raiders' Front.
It seems clear the bombers, by selecting British targets, were trying to send Britain a message: Do not stand with the United States in the war against Islamist terrorists. The 50,000 London protesters were lawfully exercising their democratic freedoms, but their message was the same.
