The formation of a solidarity committee in support of the striking supermarkets.
This Monday, we have our first meeting in the Peace center at 8124 West 3rd St. The group that has just been formed is called the Los Angeles Solidarity Strikers Organization. We are trying to launch this group to build a big Solidarity group with the strikers of the supermarkets in which we can mobilize people to the pickets, raise money, pass a petition around and if the group gets big enough we can do a rally. Alot of people are sympathetic with the strike but their isnt any organizational outlet for people to materialize their sympathies. Hopefully this group can do just that. Activist should come to the meeting to figure out with everyone else to help the workers win their struggle. If interested email backlasso@hotmail.com

This is a great idea, but ANSWER has already announced and begun implementing its strike and lockout solidarity group - Community Action Project to Support Labor (CAPSL). Althought this is a project of ANSWER, many other groups and individuals are already involved.
Please try to link up this group with what ANSWER is already doing. It would be great to get the progressive movement out in support of the striking and locked out workers!

What practical activity is ANSWER doing to advance the strike? Where, geographicly speaking, is ANSWER concentrated? (I have never seen them at any picket). In what concrete ways can the two parties collaberate?

It's better that more organizations rise to support different issues. Each is another opportunity to create local leaders, increasing the potential for change.

When the strike hit, ANSWER helped form a broad-based community organization called Community Action Project to Support Labor (CAPSL) and has marched to numerous picket lines in both LA (from Koreatown, to Pico-Union, to West LA) and Orange (La Mirada, Buena Park, Santa Ana, and more) Counties since then.
At the picket lines, ANSWER has talked to the striking and locked out workers and passed out informational leaflets to keep people from shopping at the employers' stores until the end of the dispute.
ANSWER and CAPSL have also initiated a Community Food Drive to support the UFCW workers. Please join this campaign. We are postering LA with information about the strike/lockout and the food drive in hopes of shoring up even more community support than we already have.
I hope this information answers your question. ANSWER is dedicated to supporting the workers as they struggle to keep their benefits and win this battle against the greedy supermarket bosses.

PEACE!

I came to the indymedia sit to see what the Left is doing regarding this strike. I am a striking workers and a member of this so called progressive/radical community. Lately, I have been frustrated at the lack of response from the Left in regards to our struggle. For a community that talks a lot about worker's rights, it seems to be blind about the importance of this strike and the consequences for the larger community if we lose. It is not a shock to me that people are debating about how to support us, critizing each others' position or group and not just going out and just supporting us. The fact is, we need support now. Please mobolize on our behalf. Help us fight Steve Burd (CEO of Safeway) and his little sidekicks. Don't squabble- organize. Bring us food and water. Commit actions on our behalf. Prove me wrong when I say that the Left's commitment to labor is only rhetoric. Don't think, we are not grateful the the support we have been given cause we are, just don't fall into the trap that the Left always falls into- (i.e., dogmatic debate.) And as far as the criticism made by one person about not supporting Union Fat Cat's- your statement just shows how blind you are to the real struggle going on here. Rhetoric falls short in the real world my friend. An average employee at a grocery store makes only 19,000 a year. If we lose many of us will find ourselves too broke to even afford even the roof over our heads let alone the health and benefits plan proposed by our employers. This isn't about union bosses, it is about life and dignity. Thank you everyone who have suppport us! Matthew Hart Strike Captain from Vons Yorba Linda #3069

Matthew Hart is right. We have brothers and sisters out on the front lines trying to eek out a living in this corporate controlled world who need out help. Their struggle is our struggle. Their gain is our gain. Their loss is our loss. Don't let them down. Our fight begins today! The time to help them is NOW!! Let's sit around and talk about it.

Hey "Brother" you have customers who are tired of dealing with this strike. Go back to work or quit. You union sheep make me sick. Why can't you stand on your own two feet? If you don't like your job quit. Don't want to help pay for your insurance?.... quit. By the way those "Scabs" you taunt and vilify are doing a great job while you stand outside like an idiot holding a sign.
