UFCW workers on Strike are asking that People to come together at a rally outside of the VONS in Yorba Linda to mark the 1 week of the workers strike
Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) are employed by the Vons, Pavilions, Ralph’s and Albertson’s chains. The union called a strike and set up picket lines last Saturday night against Vons and Pavilions, both of which are owned by the Safeway supermarket giant. Following the strike against Vons, workers who belong to the UFCW were locked out of work by Ralph's and Albertson's. This is the first grocery strike to take place in southern California within the past 25 years. We MUST come together as a community to support our local workers who help us EVERYDAY!
Last week, 50,000 clerks and baggers, who belong to seven UFCW locales, voted by a 98 percent margin to reject the employers’ demands. These include less pay and benefits for new hires, drastic givebacks in health and pension benefits, an increase in healthcare co-payments, reductions in premium pay, and an alteration of current union-work rules.
The strike is currently being supported and endorsed by the Teamsters, SEIU, Bakers union, and The Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union (HERE).
If you cannot attend the Yorba Linda rally please go by your local Vons, Ralph’s, Pavilion’s or Albertson’s to support and help picket with the workers and mark the 1st week of this very important strike!

Setting the record straight:
The big corporations have not been telling you the whole story. Check out these quotes from the union's information:
"Healthcare - The employers say that they just want their employees to share a 'reasonable' portion of their health care costs -- only a week for individuals and for families. This is a lie. The employers also want to increase co-payments, institute deductibles and place caps on payments for prescriptions and surgeries. This amounts to a 50 PERCENT CUT IN MEDICAL BENEFITS THAT WOULD SHIFT ALMOST A BILLION DOLLARS IN HEATH CARE COSTS ON THE WORKERS over the term of the contract.
Wages - Arguing that their employees are well paid, the employers selectively cite the highest wage levels of full-time food clerks -- as if these wages were typical. They don't tell you that MANY EMPLOYEES EARN LESS THAN AN HOUR. They also don't tell you that 75 percent of supermarket employees work part time and must keep their schedules open so they can be called in to work when needed. ON AVERAGE, THESE WORKERS MAKE ONLY 2 A WEEK."
The multimillion-dollar corporation also intends to cut wages for new employees. How nice that this union is looking out for their new employees. I worked for the airlines, and they had selfishly accepted B scale for new employees. The newer employees were basically considered second class, and this group of union supporters is against this.
Profits have increased 91 percent, but yet they want to cut funding and benefits to pensions. IT COULD BE YOU NEXT, so let's support each other. I ask all union employees to also look out for the little guys who are not in the unions, because they need to survive too. Let's support fair wages and benefits for all, while finding ways to help the small businesses too!
Hey Bead...let me hip you to something. Corporations are in the business of making a profit for their shareholders. Their function in this world is NOT to make sure that every unskilled laborer that comes along has a well paid carreer with great benefits. Just because someone makes the choice of working as a grocery clerk doesn't mean that the big "selfish" corporation needs to take care of them beyond paying them the prevailing wage.
Your sense of entitlement is ridiculous.
