Logging started in Straw Devil in unit 1 today

by akachan Friday, Jul. 25, 2003 at 6:21 AM

.

just got this message from a friend:

"Logging started in Straw Devil in unit 1 today! Come help if you can or spread the word. People are very much needed in the forest. There has been one arrest so far. Right now the freddies are attempting to take
down a sit in unit 2. Please spread the word to anyone in Oregon or traveling. Straw Devil is an amazing and beautiful old growth forest
outside of Oakridge near Eugene, OR.

Also for those who havent heard, there has been a huge fire spreading in the Willamette National forest. Last I heard, 2 days ago, it had reached as close as 2 1/2 miles from Fall Creek. I have heard from a few different people that the people occupying Fall Creek are wearing oxygen masks in order to breathe."

Carpools to Eugene are being arranged from the Cascadia Forest Alliance office at 1540 SE Clinton St. in Portland. Call 503.241.4879 to offer transportation or sign up for a ride. In Eugene, contact the Cascadia Forest Defenders at 541.684.8977 or stop by their office in the Grower's Building (5th & Willamette).

"The person arrested last week at the Straw Devil timber sale while active logging was occuring in units 1 and 2 showed up for their arraingment this morning in Lane County Court. They were informed that charges had yet to be filed against them because the investigation was still going on. The person was orginially told they would be charged with "Interfering with an agricultural operation". Now, they just need to wait and see if/when charges will be filed."

logging stopped

Straw Devil Logging Stopped

A judge has issued an injunction halting the logging of three controversial timber sales southeast of Eugene.

Environmentalists have been protesting the Straw Devil sale since loggers arrived last week. But even before that they were trying to stop it through the administrative appeals process.

Robbie Robinson, owner of Starfire Lumber Company, said his company logged about ten-percent of the sale area before the judge issued the injunctions.
