Digging for dirt

By Jim Lobe

WASHINGTON - The administration of President George W Bush is finding itself increasingly beleaguered by growing charges by retired intelligence and foreign service officers that administration hawks exaggerated the threat posed by Iraq in order to press Washington into war.
The White House was forced to admit earlier this week that Bush's assertion during his State of the Union address in late January regarding Saddam Hussein's alleged attempts to buy uranium in Africa for a supposed nuclear arms program was based on flawed intelligence and should have been omitted from the speech.
But a growing number of lawmakers and independent analysts are suggesting that the uranium report - which was actually based on crudely forged documents supposedly provided by an Italian intelligence agency - may be just the tip of the iceberg of an effort by neo-conservative and right-wing hawks centered primarily in the Pentagon and around Vice President Dick Cheney to skew the intelligence to make their case for war.
"The Bush administration did not provide an accurate picture of the military threat with respect to Iraq," according to Gregory Thielmann, who served as the director of the Strategic, Proliferation and Military Affairs Office in the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR), until last September.
Contrary to the repeated assertion by Bush and other top officials, he said, "As of March, 2003, Iraq posed no major military threat to the United States," Thielmann, a 25-year foreign service veteran, told a standing-room only press conference at the National Press Club.
He added that the administration's public statements about Iraq's biological and chemical weapons capabilities, stockpile of Scud missiles, and ties to al-Qaeda were also misleading and often based on distortions of what the intelligence community itself was saying.
His charges and the growing attention being paid to them come on the heels of similar charges by another retired foreign service officer, ambassador Joseph Wilson, who had been sent by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to Niger to check out the reports of Iraq's purchase of uranium "yellowcake".
In a television interview, Wilson, who was Washington's highest-ranking diplomat in Baghdad during the first Gulf War in 1991, said that he was stunned when Bush referred to it in his State of the Union address and concluded that its mention was part of a broader effort to influence public opinion. "It really comes down to the administration misrepresenting the facts on an issue that was a fundamental justification for going to war," he told the Washington Post. "It begs the question, what else are they lying about?"
These questions - which have been echoed by other retired intelligence officers, such as the CIA's former top counter-terrorism analyst, Vincent Cannistraro - are clearly beginning to worry the administration, particularly because of growing doubts as well about the duration and dangers posed by the US occupation of Iraq.
After the administration's assurances that US troops would be greeted by Iraqis as liberators, armed resistance to their presence appears to be rising steadily, with the US Central Command reporting an average of 13 armed attacks against forces each day. Some 30 US soldiers have been killed since May 1, when Bush declared the war over, and officials are actively studying the possibility of adding to the 145,000 troops there.
According to a new survey of public opinion released on Wednesday, just 23 percent of Americans say that the military effort in Iraq is going very well, down from 61 percent in late April. Doubts about the occupation naturally feed into concerns about how the US got there.
"If the American people conclude that American soldiers have died because the administration has lied, it will be extremely serious," according to Joseph Cirincione, an arms control specialist at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "American public opinion is clearly shifting on this issue." He said that he didn't see how the Republicans and the administration could avert a major investigation.
Bush, who had hoped that his "victory lap" around sub-Saharan Africa this week would highlight his "compassionate conservatism" for the folks back home, has been dogged by questions from reporters about his State of the Union allegations since he arrived at his first stop in Senegal.
At a joint press conference with South African President Thabo Mbeki in Pretoria, he deflected a question about it. "There is no doubt in my mind that Saddam Hussein was a threat to the world peace and there is no doubt in my mind the United States along with our allies and friends did the right thing in removing him from power," he said, adding, "I'm confident that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction."
As several Democratic lawmakers called for a full-scale Congressional investigation, Pentagon chief Donald Rumsfeld was also asked at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee whether the administration exaggerated the threat. "The coalition did not act in Iraq because we had discovered dramatic new evidence of Iraq's pursuit [of weapons of mass destruction, or WMD]," he said. "We acted because we saw the evidence in a dramatic new light - through the prism of our experience on 9-11 [September 11]."
But Rumsfeld's statement only raised new questions for analysts who have documented the administration's claims about Baghdad's WMD capabilities. Cirincione described Rumsfeld's latest assertion as "shocking". "Administration officials repeatedly said that they had new evidence [in the run-up to the war]."
Indeed, when he heard Bush's uranium reference, Thielmann said he "wondered what new evidence had come into the administration". But, when he realized that it was based on the already-discredited Niger report, he said he felt a "combination of surprise and disgust". "This administration has a faith-based attitude to intelligence," he said, which, simply stated, consisted of, "We know the answers. Give us the evidence the support those answers."
Thielmann was particularly dismissive of some Republican attempts to defend the administration. The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Tom DeLay, told reporters on Tuesday in response to the White House admission that the uranium story was false that it was "very easy to pick one little flaw here and one little flaw there". "A little flaw here, a little flaw there," said Thielmann, "and pretty soon you've fostered a fundamentally flawed view of reality".
Cirincione said that the administration's failure to find any evidence of WMD or Scud missiles despite scouring more than 200 priority sites over the past three months made it clear that the UN weapons inspectors, whose work was often mocked by administration officials, actually fulfilled their intended purpose quite well.
The administration, including even Secretary of State Colin Powell - who, according to Thielmann shielded INR from political influence - made increasingly specific claims about the intelligence it said it had about Iraq's WMD in the immediate approach to the war - in what Cirincione described as a "conscious effort to discredit the inspectors". "They had to eliminate the viable alternative to going to war," he said.
Thielmann said that in working-level discussions between analysts from different agencies, consensus about the intelligence would generally be achieved. But, as the analyses made their way to higher levels, the consensus would drop away, with the CIA and DIA tending to demur. "I can only assume this was in response to [political] pressure," he said.

deserters

by Meyer London Friday, Jul. 11, 2003 at 8:37 AM

The same old story; Himmler and Goering deserted the original Fuhrer as the allied troops closed in and he was holed up in his bunker. Hillariously, he expelled them from the Nazi Party as Soviet tanks were a few hundred yards from the bunker.

Conclusion of non-aggression treaty between DPRK and U.S. urged in S. Korea
Pyongyang, June 30 (KCNA) -- The South headquarters of the National Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country's Reunification on June 26 issued a statement titled "U.S. plan for a nuclear war against the north brings about the second June 25 war. Let us all turn out in the anti-U.S. and anti-war movement for the conclusion of a non-aggression treaty between North Korea and the U.S.", according to a news report. Such a war as was on June 25, 1950 should not break out again in this land, the statement said, adding that the second June 25 war means national extermination.
To conclude the treaty is the only way to overcome war crisis on the Korean peninsula, the statement noted.

Mass rallies held
Pyongyang, June 30 (KCNA) -- Mass rallies took place in North Phyongan, Jagang, South Hwanghae and North Hamgyong provinces on June 29 on the occasion of "June 25, the Day of Struggle Against the U.S. Imperialists." Chairmen of provincial people's committees and representatives from all walks of life in their speeches at the rallies bitterly denounced the U.S. imperialists for massacring more than 4.2 million innocent Korean people in an unprecedentedly brutal way during the last Korean war.
Many years have passed since the ceasefire, but the U.S. imperialist aggressors are still pursuing their hostile policy toward the DPRK and bringing clouds of a nuclear war to hang over the Korean peninsula in a bid to realize their sinister ambition far from drawing a lesson from their bitter defeat in the last Korean war, they said.
They solemnly warned that if the U.S. bellicose forces unleash another war in sacred Korea, oblivious of their bitter lesson from the Korean war, the army and people of Korea who have grown to be invincible ranks under the leadership of illustrious great men and woman of Mt. Paektu will turn out as one to deal a merciless sledge-hammer blow and a shameful setback to the aggressors and their followers.

Anniversary of Kim Il Sung's work observed
Pyongyang, June 30 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today dedicates a signed article to the 20th anniversary of President Kim Il Sung's famous work "On the Korean People's Struggle to Apply the Juche Idea". The work is a historic work which proudly reviews the history of the Korean revolution that emerges ever-victorious under the banner of the Juche idea and a monumental library once again clearly proving the justness of the revolutionary cause of Juche and its sure victory.
Ours is the cause of Juche and the way we have followed is the road of Juche opened by the president, the article says, and goes on:
The road of Juche is ever-victorious and the idea and feats of the president serve as an eternal boon to accomplishing the revolutionary cause of Juche.
Kim Jong Il has steered the Korean revolution to one victory after another the way the president did. Kim Jong Il's wise leadership found a vivid manifestation in that he has remarkably strengthened the driving force of revolution as required by a new era and brought about a new turn in the developing revolution in reliance upon its might.
The DPRK increased the driving force of the revolution in every way and built a powerful socialist nation of independence, self-sustenance and self-defence on this land with its might. This is the immortal feat performed by the president.
The whole party and the entire army and all the people should uphold Kim Jong Il's idea and leadership in a do-or-die spirit, displaying the spirit of devotedly defending the leader and devotedly carrying out his instructions. This single-hearted unity serves as a sure guarantee for the victory in the struggle to smash the imperialist's moves to isolate and stifle the DPRK and in the drive to build a great prosperous powerful nation in the new century.
The wise leadership of Kim Jong Il, who has led the Korean revolution along the road of Juche, is clearly demonstrated by the fact that he has built up the military power strong enough to accomplish the president's cause.
In recent years Kim Jong Il has strengthened the Korean People's Army into invincible forces, consolidated our national defence industry and built up the military power strong enough to beat back any imperialist aggression by providing dynamic Songun revolutionary leadership.
It is thanks to the invincible self-defensive military power and the strong military deterrent force built up under the leadership of Kim Jong Il that the DPRK has vigorously advanced along the road of Juche chosen by its people themselves while defending the sovereignty of the nation and its vital rights even under the present situation where the imperialists are engrossed in high-handed practices and aggression and wantonly violating the sovereignty of countries and nations.

U.S. dastardly moves against DPRK assailed
Pyongyang, June 30 (KCNA) -- Under the coercion of the United States the tenth ministerial meeting of the ASEAN regional forum held in Phnom Penh recently adopted its "president's statement" containing the part referring to the Korean peninsula that reflected Washington's unilateral assertion only. The U.S. is keen to refer the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula to the UNSC in a bid to have its president's statement adopted for increased pressure upon the DPRK. Rodong Sinmun Monday dismisses this as a wanton violation of the purpose of the forum and its principles adopted at the second ministerial meeting of the forum held in August 1995.
The commentary goes on:
The U.S. misused the forum for forcibly adopting the statement that reflects its unreasonable assertion calling for interference in the internal affairs of the DPRK and pressure upon it. This was prompted by its sinister intention to increase international pressure upon the DPRK.
It is preposterous and unreasonable for the U.S. to try to bring the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula up for discussion at the UNSC and force it to take stronger measures. This is a very insolent, provocative and dangerous move.
The UN is by no means a body that should allow a big country to control and pressurize small countries to meet its interests and aim.
The UN should not be misused to serve the purpose of the U.S. policy of pressurizing the DPRK.
If the UNSC is to deal with the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula, it should blame the U.S. for having spawned the issue and escalated the tensions on the principle of impartiality.
It is none other than the U.S. which openly listed non-signatories to the NPT as targets of its preemptive nuclear attacks, unilaterally scrapped the DPRK-U.S. Agreed Framework and the DPRK-U.S. Joint Statement and wantonly violated the NPT and all other international agreements.
The UNSC should strongly blame the U.S. for those criminal responsibilities.
The U.S. intention to use the un as means of putting pressure upon the DPRK over its nuclear issue and secure a justification for provoking a new Korean war would only create an uncontrollable situation.

Trolls

by Troll Watcher Friday, Jul. 11, 2003 at 8:47 AM

Don't the trolls have any better way to spend their time than post stuff like this Eric clown just afflicted us with? Or are they being paid to do this all day long? I knew the unemployment rate under Bush was disgraceful, but I didn't realize that it was bad enough to lead people into jobs like that.

Anniversary of Kim Il Sung's demise commemorated
Pyongyang, July 7 (KCNA) -- A memorial meeting of youth and students in Pyongyang "the leader will always be with the young people thanks to the general" took place before the statue of President Kim Il Sung on Mansu Hill of Pyongyang on July 6 on the occasion of the 9th anniversary of his demise. The meeting began with an ode and song "strong yearning". Ri Hang Jun, secretary of the Central Committee of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League, said in a speech that Kim Jong Il opened a new history of perpetuating the memory of the president, reflecting the ardent longing of the youth and students and all other people for him and their strong desire to hold him in high esteem as the eternal sun of Juche.
Young people from all walks of life renewed their determination to devotedly defend Kim Jong Il and uphold the Songun politics of the Workers' Party of Korea in the van, always keeping in mind the president's behests on holding Kim Jong Il in higher esteem.
Kim Jung Rin, secretary of the Central Committee of the WPK, Kim Kyong Ho, first secretary of the c.c. of the league, and others were present at the meeting.
A memorial stage of agricultural workers "the fatherly leader is still with our farmers in Yonbaek plain" was held in Ohyon-ri, Yonan county, South Hwanghae Province on the same day.
Sung Sang Sop, chairman of the Central Committee of the Union of Agricultural Workers of Korea, said in a speech that Kim Il Sung devoted all his efforts to the development of the country's agriculture and the happiness of the people, always mixing with the farmers, adding that he was the father of the people peerless in history.
There was a presentation of art pieces including a female vocal solo "the leader is without an equal in the world", a mixed duet "the general is identical to the leader" and women's quintet "fully ripe rice sways on either side of the road to the front". It successfully represented the revolutionary enthusiasm of the agricultural workers.

It introduced into agriculture
Pyongyang, July 7 (KCNA) -- The agricultural sector is focusing on it and its introduction in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Agronomists of the computer centre at the Academy of Agricultural Science have already gained some successes in the work -- the comprehensive estimation of the country's land resources productivity, dividing of agro-ecological zones, crop growth forecast, distribution of varieties, selecting of the right time to manure and cultivate crops during the sowing and rice-transplanting season and according to farming operations, decision of a crop estimate and so on.
These research hits are now available to the agricultural producers across the country through the network.
They were applied last year to the farming of the Migok Cooperative Farm in Sariwon city, North Hwanghae Province.
This year South Hwanghae and other provinces will benefit from them.
Ri Yong Gu, director of the computer centre, said that the application of high technology to agricultural production is not only an important potentiality for increasing the country's agricultural production under the present investment environment but a prerequisite to the it industry.
The Ministry of Agriculture plans to launch the it-based output increase programme as a nationwide undertaking and is working on the application of agricultural information.

U.S. attempt to abuse name of UN blasted
Pyongyang, July 7 (KCNA) -- The United States recently distributed copies of its "draft statement" critical of the DPRK among member states of the U.N. security council in a bid to have a "statement of its president" adopted and desperately lobbied for achieving its objective. But its bid proved futile due to the opposition of some countries. Rodong Sinmun today carries a signed commentary in this regard.
The commentary says:
Such move of the United States is an act of disregarding the principles of the U.N. Charter as it branded the DPRK's just measures to defend its sovereignty as unjust ones by making a profound confusion of the relations between the arch criminal, who spawned the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula, and its victim.
Through this the U.S. sought to convince the international community of the danger of nuclear development" in the DPRK and pit the U.N. against Pyongyang in a bid to get a justification for pursuing its policy of aggression against the DPRK.
It is none other than the United States that compelled the DPRK to build up a strong physical deterrent force. The U.S. is persistently pulling up the DPRK over its "nuclear issue" and working hard to bring it up for discussion at the U.N. in a bid to get it take any "step" against Pyongyang while keeping mum about the nuclear weaponization of Japan, Israel and its other allies. This clearly indicates its unjust act of applying "double standards" in handling the nuclear issue, away from the principle of impartiality.
The DPRK and the United States are committed to respect the U.N. Charter and abide by all its principles as members of the U.N. All its member states are equal and none of them has the right to impose its will and demand upon other member states.
It is an insult and a mockery of the U.N. for the U.S. to attempt to take any "measure" against the DPRK through the U.N. forum.
If the U.N. Security Council takes any "action" critical of the DPRK contrary to its stand and interests, as demanded by the U.S. it will leave an indelible blot on the U.N. history as it will be little short of encouraging U.S. arbitrary practices and moves for hegemony.
Pressure or blackmail will not help solve the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula. Dialogue and negotiations are the only way of settling it.

"Theory of principal enemy" peddled by S. Korean military refuted
Pyongyang, July 7 (KCNA) -- A spokesman for the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland issued a statement on July 6 accusing the South Korean military authorities of vociferating again about the "theory of principal enemy" in a bid to bedevil the inter-Korean relations. The statement says:
The "Ministry of National Defence" of South Korea in teaching materials titled "moral education" distributed among frontline units called not only the government, the army and the citizens in the north but South Koreans and the world peace-loving people supporting the north "principal enemies".
The "theory of principal enemy" can never go together with the "policy of peace and prosperity."
Although the South Korean authorities are talking about a "policy of peace and prosperity", they are, in fact, pursuing confrontation and war. This is clearly evidenced by their loudmouthed "theory of principal enemy."
The South Korean military authorities are calling the fellow countrymen in the north "principal enemies" while treating the U.S. troops stationed in South Korea, the outsiders, like an ancestral tablet. This is, however, nothing but the shriek of the doomed.
The advocacy of the "theory of principal enemy" will only bring war, disaster and self-destruction. The South Korean military authorities should know well that they will be held entirely accountable before the nation for the irretrievably serious consequences to be entailed by their fresh racket.

KCNA lays bare true colours of Japan as war criminal state
Pyongyang, July 7 (KCNA) -- The "remembrance, responsibility and future" fund of Germany on June 30 declared that it has paid reparations to the tune of 2.3 billion euro to 1.37 million victims to forced labor of 70 countries of the world including Russia and Ukraine from June 2001 to June 2003. It is said that the fund will continue compensating till 2005, with the funds coming from the federal budget and private companies of Germany.
As is well known, Germany, a war criminal state in Europe, has sincerely paid reparations and made compensation for scores of years to those nations and individuals that fell victim to fascist Germany in one way or the other during the Second World War after deeming it a state responsibility to compensate for the war crimes and apologizing for them.
According to information available, Germany paid 122.3 billion mark equivalent to 7,900 billion yen as reparations by the end of the 20th century.
But the attitude taken by Japan, another war criminal state in Asia, is quite the opposite.
Japan has paid only 356, 552.07 million yen in compensation according to article 14 a of the San Francisco Peace Pact which stipulates that "Japan admits that it has to compensate allies for damage and sufferings it inflicted upon them during the war" and bilateral treaty and agreement signed in the subsequent period.
Japan had refused to apologize to the Asian people for its crimes committed against them for half a century. Only on the 50th anniversary of its defeat it made a "repentance" for mere form's sake through the so-called "Statement of Murayama (the then prime minister)."
It was no more than a verbal repentance and apology. Japan has not made any sincere compensation or reparation for mental, human and material damage it did to the Korean people.
During its colonial military rule over Korea the Japanese imperialists forcibly drafted more than 8.4 million young and middle-aged Koreans and killed over one million Koreans.
A special mention should be made of the fact that they forced more than 200,000 Korean women into sexual slavery for the imperial Japanese army and killed many of them in cold blood.
The Japanese imperialists indiscriminately destroyed or looted valuable cultural heritages handed down by ancestors and plundered Korea of natural resources and products without limit.
The crimes committed by Japan in the past are too many to enumerate. Yet, there is no prospect of Japan's redress for them though nearly 60 years have passed since its defeat.
Even in this new century Japan is talking about a "peace state," a "normal state" and "future", keeping mum about the aggression and plunder it committed against Korea and other Asian countries. On the contrary it is keen to emerge a military power and launch expansion overseas.
This is clearly evidenced by the fact that on July 4 shortly after it was reported that Germany has made fresh efforts to carve out its future after getting understanding from countries around it by liquidating its gloomy past, Japan was so brazen-faced as to approve at its diet a bill on dispatching heavily armed self-defence force to Iraq.
Japan is getting more zealous than any other countries in supporting the U.S. in its strategy to stifle the DPRK over the "nuclear issue." This poses a great threat not only to the Korean peninsula but to the rest part of Asia.
japan is greatly mistaken, however.
The Korean nation is by no means what it used to be in the past and Asia today is not what it was in the past, either.
The army and the people of the DPRK will resolutely foil Japan's moves to launch reinvasion of Korea under the uplifted banner of Songun to protect the peace and stability on the peninsula and in the rest of Asia.

In the belief that the friendly and cooperative ties between the two countries would grow stronger in the future, the message sincerely wished the president fresh success in his work for protecting the sovereignty of the country and the well-being of the people.

and they said we were ineffective

by matt Friday, Jul. 11, 2003 at 4:39 PM

"Then don't force people to hard sell you in order to do the right thing.

Blame yourself."

Well I for one do take some consolation that we were so difficult to sell on widespread mass murder committed by our troops against people that did nothing to us halfway around the world.

I am proud to have been very very opposed to placing our troops in harms way without conclusive evidence that it was our obligation to do so.

And I take great pride that the collective efforts of the anti-war movement was enough to force the bush administration to nix the shock and awe strategy, to force them to provide some 'real' justification, which they were unable to find and thus started just making crap up.

And i will rejoice the day bush's lies come back to stab him in the eye. I will be celebrating in the streets.

By the way, what part of 6000+ civilians dead, a couple hundred of our boys, and the worst humanitarian crisis in the world today is 'the right thing'?

Do you sleep safer at night now than you did before? Do you enjoy the luxuries the american way of life affords you more now, knowing that our promises to bring these things to a war torn afghanistan/iraq just shortly after bombing the holy fuck out of them was completely based off lies and empty promises? Do you think anyone in iraq feels safer now than they did before? Warfuckers will say i'm apologizing for saddam and that i would have him back in power, and that is not true, but you must realistically view the situation and ask yourself, have we made anything at all better from this, for anyone? I think a rational inspection of the repurcussions of our actions will lead you to the conclusion that no, nothing we've done over there has made anything even one bit better, here, there, or anywhere else in the world.

What the hell are you talking about?

by Iggy Friday, Jul. 11, 2003 at 4:58 PM

" Do you enjoy the luxuries the american way of life affords you more now, knowing that our promises to bring these things to a war torn afghanistan/iraq just shortly after bombing the holy fuck out of them was completely based off lies and empty promises? "

When did anyone ever promise the "luxuries the american way of life " to Afganistan? We didn't make any deal with them in order to gain their permission to take out the Taliban. "bombing the holy fuck out of them", which was hardly the case to begin with was based on the Taliban actively supporting and protecting the savages that attacked us. What would you have had us do? Oh, let me guess, send in a police force to bring Bin Laden to "justice".

Pathetic.

By the way, what part of arab history and sociology leads you to believe that Afganistan is even remotely capable of handling 21century civilization and democracy?

And, no I don't neccessarily feel safer per se, but I do feel good knowing there's one less despot slaughtering his own people for sport and just waiting for a chance to fuck us in some way.

Oh, and, how long have you been operating under this particular delusion that you and your ilk somehow forced the downgrade of Shock and Awe?

Argument

by activist community Saturday, Jul. 12, 2003 at 5:29 AM

Of course there was an argument to refute. It's the same argument everyday. Day after day after day after day after day after day after day after day we bring up the same old, worn out arguments. We could care less if the whole world has moved on, we have our feet firmly planted in the quicksand and we're staying for the endurance. That's because we have principle, something these trolls know nothing about. Why, if it weren't for us, the world would have exploded by now, and then where would we be? Probably at some corporate coffee shop sipping on a cuppachino. I'm thirsty. Let's sit around and talk about it.

Iggy, Middle East Scholar

by Meyer London Saturday, Jul. 12, 2003 at 6:09 AM

Nothing like combining abysmal ignorance and racism in the same posting, Iggy - although that is nothing new as far as right wingers on this board are concerned. So the Afghans are incapable of "democracy," eh? Seems to me I've heard that argument before - used to justify the Apartheid regime in South Africa and the Israelis theft of Arab land in Palestine. By the way, how do you define democracy anyway - what we have here, where bosses and "managers" rule the places where most people spend most of their time as absolute kings, queens or dictators, and we get to choose once every year between two corporate financed stooges for President? Even then, the ruling class nullifies the result if they don't like it, as happened in Florida.
To clear up your ignorance, Professor Iggy, Afghanistan is not an Arab country, and the nearest Arab country is hundreds of miles away. Afghans belong to a number of ethnic groups, and the most common language is Persian (Farsi). The country's culture is similar in some ways to neighboring Iran. Or perhaps you think Iran is an Arab country, too? Ignorance is bliss, and you seem to be as well informed on world events in general as you are on Afghanistan.

Good question, smiley.

by Eric Saturday, Jul. 12, 2003 at 6:58 AM

I've been asking these anarchists and socialists that question for years.

Although they won't outline it for you, their solution goes something like this:

-Stage a bloody revolution
-Kill all the rich people and take their wealth and land
-Give all that wealth and land to the rest of the 6 billion people on Earth so we can all be poor. (it still remains to be seen, if they would actually redistribute the wealth. More likely than not they'd keep it for themselves, that they'll tell you they want to give it to the poor)
-Lock into prisons, or kill anyone that disagrees with them.

That's the main points. Maybe we can get them to expand on these for us?

I doubt it though.

Psychic Dems Network

by Ffutal Saturday, Jul. 12, 2003 at 12:01 PM

"Bush Knew Iraq Info Was Dubious" reads the CBSNews.com headline. Last night, as a Google search shows, the same story was titled "Bush Knew Iraq Info Was False." It turns out that the story says nothing of the sort. The reference is to Bush's statement, toward the end of his 2003 State of the Union address, that "the British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa."

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/06/25/eveningnews/main560449.shtml

http://news.google.com/news?q=%22Bush+Knew+Iraq+Info+Was+False%22&num=100&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&c2coff=1&safe=off&sa=N&tab=wn

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/01/20030128-19.html

So now there's this big brouhaha about just how this 16-word sentence got into a 5,500-word speech. Did the CIA know? That's a silly question. The CIA is a big organization; not everyone in it knows the same things. The Associated Press reports National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice says that "if CIA Director George Tenet had any misgivings about that sentence in the president's speech, 'he did not make them known' to Bush or his staff." But CBS reports that "CIA officials warned members of the President's National Security Council staff the intelligence was not good enough to make the flat statement Iraq tried to buy uranium from Africa." Of course, Bush didn't "make the flat statement"; he merely cited a British report, which turned out to be false. CBS acknowledges that "the statement was technically correct."

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=535&ncid=535&e=2&u=/ap/20030711/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_iraq

Democrats, showing again their complete lack of perspective, are trying to turn this to their political advantage. "Campaigning in New Hampshire, Democrat Howard Dean demanded the resignation of any Bush administration official or federal government employee who failed to tell the president that claims about Iraq buying uranium from Africa were false," reports the Associated Press. Of course, the story seems to be that no one told Bush, which means that Dean is demanding the resignation of the entire federal government--which may end up vindicating another State of the Union claim that I'd thought was phony, namely "The era of big government is over."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A39551-2003Jul10.html

John Kerry also got into the act. The haughty, French-looking Massachusetts Democrat, who by the way served in Vietnam, "said he is not prepared to draw a conclusion on whether the administration deliberately misled the country about the threat of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but said his 'level of concern is very high,' " reports the Washington Post.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A40403-2003Jul10.html?nav%253Dhptop_tb

The subtext of all this is the claim some Dems have been making for some time now, namely that Bush "misled" the country into war. But it is logically impossible for the SOTU snafu to support this claim. Bush delivered the speech on Jan. 28, 2003--109 days after Congress voted to go to war. Are Kerry and the others who voted "aye" going to claim that they somehow knew what the president was going to say more than three months in advance? What are they, psychic?
