LA City Council Anti-War Resolution

by Duff Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at 2:36 PM
duff@ecomail.org

A compliation of information...we can do this.

A.
Rev. Cecil Murray, pastor of First African Methodist Episcopal Church, supports our antiwar petition efforts. We are invited to collect signatures at their church at this Sunday's 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon services. It is Martin Luther King weekend, a most appropriate time to engage in action devoted to peace.

Cut and paste this into your browser:
http://207.201.175.233/First_AME_Church/church/home_church_open.html

We are still seeking volunteers to collect signatures there. We need three more volunteers for each service.

If you can assist at one or both of these services, please reply directly to the email address below or telephone me at 323.550.1878

Thank you.

B.
Here are some ways to help with the signature gathering effort to get a anti-war resolution from LA's city council....

The Chicago City Council voted 46-1 today against a unilateral military attack on Iraq.
The resolution said military action against Iraq would cost billions of dollars, and during the debate, council members discussed how federal budget cuts could affect programs that benefit Chicago residents.

Anti-war statements have been passed in others cities, including San Francisco, Seattle, Ithaca, New York, and Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Our chapter has signed onto a recent effort to have the Los Angeles City Council adopt a similar resolution. There are petitions being circulated throughout the City which are available at the ADA Office. If you would like to help circulate a petition in your area, please call our office at (323) 651-4440 or e-mail to us at socalada@earthlink.net and we will make arrangements to send you the materials.

Warm Regards,

Susie Shannon

Go directly to the Neighbors for Peace and Justice link above to read the resolution and print out your own.

wording

by duff Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at 2:38 PM

Here is the wording of the proposed resolution:

Proposed RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF
LOS ANGELES OPPOSING UNITED STATES MILITARY ACTION AGAINST IRAQ

WHEREAS, the government has estimated that a war would cost 200 billion dollars, resulting in less federal funding for education, health care, job training, and housing in a time of increasing need for residents of Los Angeles; and

WHEREAS, a war would result in the death of Iraqi civilians, as well as military casualties, including U.S. service men and women. Additionally, a war would result in widespread environmental destruction; and

WHEREAS, a preemptive attack by the U.S. not only sets a dangerous precedent for the international community, but also promises to destabilize the entire Middle East region; and

WHEREAS, the Bush administration has failed to present credible evidence that Iraq poses a military or security threat to the United States.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City Council of the City of Los Angeles: supports all international diplomatic efforts to resolve the current conflict with Iraq and opposes any military action against Iraq unless as a response to a direct military attack by that country.

How ironic

by just a comment Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003 at 11:38 PM

The irony is amazing.

L.A., a city that had the best public rail transportation in the world many years ago, and sacrificed it for car culture.

A city that is defined by its outstretched suburbs and massive freeway system.

The leading city in the U.S. as far as oil consumption.

The city where public transportation is a joke, and owning a car is a necessity, not a luxury.

Where parking enforcement is extremely effective, and the police are not.

What a cruel joke it would be for the city of Los Angeles to pass such a "resolution".

Mr.

We are all talking about the same proposed resolution. I am a Neighbors for Peace and Justice (NPJ) organizer. NPJ, ADA, and several other groups are working as a coalition to urge L.A. City Council to pass this resolution against war in Iraq.

I'm trying to think of something more trivial than such a resolution

by Bush Admirer Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003 at 8:35 PM

Pray tell, what significance could a resolution by the L.A. City Council have for our national policy vs. Iraq? If I'm a taxpayer in Los Angeles, and my elected officials are wasting time on this sort of nonsense, then we should boot them out of office at first opportunity.

While they're at it, they may as well pass a resolution against smoking cigars in Cuba.

Hmmm - the latter resolution actually makes more sense, and it's closer to their jurisdiction.

What kind of message does this resolution sent to the many City residents and City employees that are already enlisted? How about thinking about them.

I think we are...

by c71898 Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at 12:21 PM

People who enlist should be prepared for an anti-war movement. People hope the troops come home safely. We're also thinking about innocent Iraqi civilians.

People who Enlist

by Kurt Monday, Feb. 24, 2003 at 6:18 PM

are also thinking of the Iraqi civilians. How can you be so hypocritical...leave a brutal dictator alone, after all, he's not bothering us. Do you want to wait until this is one of our cities ( Saddam's Peace ) before you think he should be taken out of power? Perhaps even then you would say "he had a right to gas innocent people, we just don't understand him", huh? We know he has these weapons (since at least 1988), his agreement after the gulf war was to disarm and get rid of these weapons...the inspectors are not there to play hide-and-seek, they are there to ensure he has disarmed. The only reason he is up to where he is today, is that we did nothing after he continuously broke UN resolutions. I have enlisted, and I most definitely do NOT want to see another 9/11 or worse! The LA City Council should stick with it's own affairs and pass a resolution against gang violence or violent crime. That would solve everything...wouldn't it? Once those gangs and criminals hear about that, they'll quake in fear and stop the criminal activity. Heck, they might as well pass a resolution to prevent Saddam from killing children while they're at it.

ANTI-DEMOCRAT

by Al Bundy Thursday, Mar. 13, 2003 at 8:17 AM

You left-wing, clueless, tree-hugging anti-warmongers. I am appalled to this day that democrats can be as stupid as they are--praising world peace and slamming your president. This isn't about oil--this war could be the only answer to peace. We're looking at a middle-eastern dictator with WMDs and all you people can cry about is peace. Don't you think that getting a tyrant like Hussein to disarm would be a hell of a good start? So, I guess that means that you're perfectly ok with Muslims coming to America and using your family and loved ones as World Trade fodder? But let's not mess with Iraq because we want world peace. You all make me sick--hey, if you don't like it, you could always move your sorry asses over to France. Get the hell out of the country if you got a problem with this war. In order for there to be peace and democracy in the middle east, leaders like Hussein must be ousted. Support our troops...power to America...let's kick some Iraqi ass. One last thing--for you Muslims out there who are protesting in this country...if you have such a problem with this, why don't you head home, grab a weapon, and defend your nation. This country is the reason you have the RIGHT to protest...you should consider yourself fortunate that a country like this exists to house your sorry asses. All of you war protesters, take your lack of patriotism and just leave the country. How many more liberals have to die in future 9/11's before they catch on?
