by Jason Friday, Jan. 17, 2003 at 11:22 PM

Let's make it happen here! If cities like DC and Detroit and now Chicago are on record to be against this war, now is the time for LA to do the same.

An Antiwar Sausage

by Ffutal Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at 12:38 PM

See if you can follow this:

CNN reports the Chicago City Council passed a resolution "against a unilateral military attack on Iraq."

But the resolution also calls Saddam Hussein "a tyrant who should be removed from power."

But it also says: "It not at all clear that a unilateral U.S. military action would result in the installation of a free and democratic Iraqi government."

But it also gives, in CNN's words, "unconditional support to U.S. military personnel."

No wonder the council passed the resolution 46-1. Everybody can agree with *some* part of it.

Lets get this going in LA

by duff via e-mail Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at 12:39 PM

Rev. Cecil Murray, pastor of First African Methodist Episcopal Church, supports our antiwar petition efforts. We are invited to collect signatures at their church at this Sunday's 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon services. It is Martin Luther King weekend, a most appropriate time to engage in action devoted to peace.

We are still seeking volunteers to collect signatures there. We need three more volunteers for each service.

If you can assist at one or both of these services, please reply directly to this email or telephone me at 323.550.1878

Thank you.

I tried

by cass71898 Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at 1:24 PM

I contacted members of my town council (L.A. county area) about passing an anti-war resolution and they shot me down. They said that they have more important things to do and I should do some community service if I wanted to make a difference. Oh, they said that there was no use in trying to stop a war that can't be stopped! As*holes!

Remind them

by Marc Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at 1:32 PM

Make a point to remind them, politely, mind you, that theyare your elected officials. They represent you, not the other way around. Gather some signatures from people in your community in regards to your opinions on the war. Bring it to them, e-mail them, direct mail them, mail copies to your local paper as well as the LA Times. Make it a point to be cordial and polite in all your dealings. And also remind them that they are bound to enact the will of the electorate, which is you and all the people who sign the petition. Remind them that people have memories and that those who have signed the petition will actively pursue alternate candidates in the next election. Maybe even include that last in your petition to let them know you mean business.
As Hunter S. Thompson said "Don't take any guff from these Swine!"

Ironic

by just a comment Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003 at 11:57 PM

This is a cross post - seems like there's a little more activity here.

The irony is amazing.

L.A., a city that had the best public rail transportation in the world many years ago, and sacrificed it for car culture.

A city that is defined by its outstretched suburbs and massive freeway system.

The leading city in the U.S. as far as oil consumption.

The city where public transportation is a joke, and owning a car is a necessity, not a luxury.

Where parking enforcement is extremely effective, and the police are not.

What a cruel joke it would be for the city of Los Angeles to pass such a "resolution".

The City of Los Angeles has more pressing and relevant things to do. This "resolution" is meaningless especially in Los Angeles. It resolves nothing.

Sorting out its issues with transportation is a start.
