If you didn't make it to the DGA in Hollywood tonight to see "Unprecedented" you were spared from feeling your blood boil once again over the "coup d'etat" by George W. Bush and friends. Its a great film and should not be missed by anyone who truly cares about democracy in this country.
The documentary revisits the Presidential Elections of 2000 and the intrigue behind tallying the votes. And yes, its filled with more intrigue than even Hollywood's best screen writers can make up--from the purges of black voters on voting roles, to blocking voters rights, to the out right sabotage conducted by Katherine Harris. This is a film that anyone who is genuinely concerned about civil rights should get their hands on. If the shenanigans of the Supreme Court were unclear to you back in 2000, they will be more than crystal clear after seeing this doc.
The upside of the film is it exposes the clearly racist and hostile policies of a Republican agenda to win Florida's electoral votes. The down side is: you're left with the realisation that the biggest crooks involved were in Washington DC. They are 5 Supreme Court Justices whose names you should never forget: Scalia, O'Connor, Thomas, Kennedy, and Rehnquist .
It becomes clear in the doc that Scalia and Thomas both should have recused themselves from the case. Scalia's two sons were both lawyers working for Bush. Thomas's wife was collecting applications for people who want to work in the Bush administration. If either had recused himself, the vote would be 4-4, and the Florida Supreme Court decision allowing recounts would have been affirmed.
The fact they did not only shows just how political and criminal their ruling was.
So, see the film if you can. You can buy it on their webite or try and catch it at some of the upcoming screenings. There is a schedule including film festivals around the country.
But be prepared to have your blood boil over the "Unprecedented" injustice of the 2000 Presidential Election.

Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election is the riveting story about the battle for the Presidency in Florida and the undermining of democracy in America. Filmmakers Richard Ray Pérez and Joan Sekler examine modern America's most controversial political contest: the Election of George W. Bush.
What emerges is a disturbing picture of an election marred by suspicious irregularities, electoral injustices, and sinister voter purges in a state governed by the winning candidate's brother. George W. Bush stole the presidency of the United States… and got away with it.
"…the movie highlights those on the front lines—from the African-Americans who were turned away from the polling booths for assorted reasons. … In one memorable scene the filmmakers freeze-frame a 'protest' against the ballot recount, identifying participants as staff members of Republican elected officials."

What happened in Florida was simple, Al Gore attempted to us an unconstitutional recount in 3 selected counties dominated by democrats to override the decisions made by the voters in the remaining part of the state.
As demonstrated by the countless media sponsored recounts, Bush won Florida and therefore the presidency.
Fortunately, 7 of the 9 members of the Supreme Court saw that the recounts which Gore argued for violated due process.

Hey Jarhead, the partisan supreme court intervened and interrupted the recount
to supposedly protect the "integrity" of the election in the eyes of the American
public, but in doing so they expressed their partisanship to protecting the interests
of the Bush campaign, which was associated with harrassment of the vote-counters
by Republican aides who beset election offices like a bunch of fucking Nazi, Florida
secretary of state Kathleen Harris' use of a private corporation to check the state felons
list and purge voter rolls of African Americans, blacks being physically prevented
from voting, outdated equipment and confusing ballots in poorer counties; and the
whole farce being called in bush's favor by the corporate media.....I know
all the facts and I haven't even seen the video.
Bush stole the election, simple and plain, get a real brain.

The only people disenfranchised in 2000 were the hundreds of American Servicemen and women who had their votes thrown out at the insistance of the Gore "every vote counts" campaign. Find me one single case of confirmed disenfranchisment besides this. Lots of allegations and hot air drummed up by the squadrons of lawyers sent there by Gore, but no substance. And it was the Democrats who violated State law so egregiously that the Supreme Court had to step in twice to reign them in.

Bush is a liar and a thief...everybody except the most "Simple" minded syncophants (and Flea-Mex with his delusions of granduer most DEFINITELY fits the category) know it,
...and even some of them know it but continue with the big lie anyway, so devoid of any integrity as they are.
End of story.

Absentee votes cast by military personnel were NOT thrown out. Quite the contrary, Katherine Harris allowed that any absentee votes from the military oversees should be counted and included. This includes votes with foreign postmarks dated AFTER the election date.
You really should see the film--it'll set the record straight on many points that previously you may have been misled on.
The doc is filled with factual findings and evidence including documents and witness testimony. You can make up your own mind after you view it what you think happened.
But its pretty clear, Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris set out to make sure George W. Bush won regardless of how the PEOPLE in Florida cast their votes.

Bullcrap. The military votes were found invalid, and found invalid by a Florida judge at the insistance of lawyers working for the Gore campaign. Famously the lawyers in question were high-fiving each other when they got votes disqualified. When confronted over their behavior they replied: "A win's a win".
Leftist revisionist history is always so entertaining. They will spin and lie to themselves until they believe it.

There were plenty of Military ballots that were counted even though post marked after election day...
...I cannot vote after election day, why should someone in the military get special rights?
Look into it for yourself before you start spewing about revisionism

There is a significant difference between a person voting past election day and a military absentee balot being postmarked after election day. In case you are unaware, many soldiers and sailors are stationed in inhospitable regions with infrequent mail delivery. If a soldier or sailor voted prior to the deadline, but his or her vote wasn't postmarked until after it is not their fault, but the fault of poor mail delivery.
The Gore campaign made a lot of noise during the re-re-recounts of the importance of counting every vote. They even wanted to suggest that elderly voters had been confused and should be given an opportunity to vote again. This doesn't exactly jive with their decision to attempt to nullify as many military absentee ballots as possible, for fear that they would primarily be Republican votes.
Your guy lost, tried to change the rules midstream, got caught, and finally conceded. He seems to have accepted the results, I wonder when you will.

...sure it's their fault...shoulda voted earlier. The law is clear..doesn't say "except for military blah blah in hazardous blah.."
Fact is you want to ignore the law if it does not serve you and enforce it when it does...typical Republican Hypocrite!
...and pardon my redundancy

I am perfectly willing to concede any military votes post marked after election day.
Now will you concede that George W. Bush defeated Albert Gore in Florida's election?

The US Supreme Court overruled the Florida State Supreme Court. So much for your arguement regarding state's rights.
Florida just had to settle with the NAACP for voter fraud as a result of the voter roll purges that tagetted black voters. Florida (read Katherine Harris and friends) lost.
As the recounts were being conducted, a group of paid republican pundits stormed the Dada County electoral offices and prevented the recount. Their pictures and names are listed in the documentary.
The company that performed the database purge notified Katherina Harris that due to the format the Sec wished to use to clear the voter rolls of felons, there would be alot of false positives. In other words, sex, name, social security number, date of birth, date of conviction, race did not have to match to be a "hit".
For example, lets say there was an African American named Josephine L. Smith born January 15, 1962. She could be struck form the rolls because Caucasian Joseph D. Smith born January 15, 1948 was a convicted felon.
As part of the settlement in the suit brought by the NAACP, the company was required to correct the rolls. Only 3% of all the people they struck from the rolls were in fact felons who should have been removed in the first place. And yes. Its in writing from Katherine Harris and Jeb Bush that this is what they wanted. "The widest margin possible."
When campaigning for Governor, Jeb Bush was asked: "What will you do for the black community of Florida?" Jeb Bush replied "Probably nothing."
