Unprecedented-the documentary

by pb Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002 at 4:02 AM

If you didn't make it to the DGA in Hollywood tonight to see "Unprecedented" you were spared from feeling your blood boil once again over the "coup d'etat" by George W. Bush and friends. Its a great film and should not be missed by anyone who truly cares about democracy in this country.

The documentary revisits the Presidential Elections of 2000 and the intrigue behind tallying the votes. And yes, its filled with more intrigue than even Hollywood's best screen writers can make up--from the purges of black voters on voting roles, to blocking voters rights, to the out right sabotage conducted by Katherine Harris. This is a film that anyone who is genuinely concerned about civil rights should get their hands on. If the shenanigans of the Supreme Court were unclear to you back in 2000, they will be more than crystal clear after seeing this doc.

The upside of the film is it exposes the clearly racist and hostile policies of a Republican agenda to win Florida's electoral votes. The down side is: you're left with the realisation that the biggest crooks involved were in Washington DC. They are 5 Supreme Court Justices whose names you should never forget: Scalia, O'Connor, Thomas, Kennedy, and Rehnquist .

It becomes clear in the doc that Scalia and Thomas both should have recused themselves from the case. Scalia's two sons were both lawyers working for Bush. Thomas's wife was collecting applications for people who want to work in the Bush administration. If either had recused himself, the vote would be 4-4, and the Florida Supreme Court decision allowing recounts would have been affirmed.

The fact they did not only shows just how political and criminal their ruling was.

So, see the film if you can. You can buy it on their webite or try and catch it at some of the upcoming screenings. There is a schedule including film festivals around the country.

But be prepared to have your blood boil over the "Unprecedented" injustice of the 2000 Presidential Election.
