Possible IMF/World Bank meeting changes

by invisible, ink. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001 at 1:52 AM

Local D.C. news: Secuity concerns lead to possible venue/date change for upcoming IMF/World Bank meetings.

Local Washington, D.C., activists reported today that WRC-TV Channel 4 (NBC) ran a story on the possibility that the D.C. IMF/World Bank meetings scheduled for late September/early October may be changing dates and even venue in response to "security concerns about demonstrations at those meetings."

The report quoted an on-camera interview with assistant police chief Gainer, who said authorities were considering "compressing the meetings or changing the venue."

Currently, the meetings are scheduled to run for six days, from September 28 through October 4; this may be scaled back to three days.

According to unnamed "federal officials," however, it is "extremely unlikely" that the meetings will not take place in D.C. as planned.

It was also reported that regardless of any changes that might take place, protestors will still proceed with planned convergance and demonstration actions.

by invisible, ink. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001 at 8:14 PM

excerpt from a statement released today by the World Bank and IMF:

-------------------

"This year's Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund will take place over two days - September 29 and 30, 2001 - subject to the formal approval of this change by the Executive Directors of the two institutions. A final decision is expected by Tuesday, August 14.

The Meetings are being consolidated after consultation with the U.S. Government. The World Bank and IMF fully share the interest of the U.S. authorities, in their role as host of the event, in ensuring the conduct of all essential business with the least possible disruption to the people who live and work in Washington, D.C. We will conduct all of the necessary and essential business of the Annual Meetings during these two days...."
