Is LA on a Christian Crusade?

by Justice Wednesday, Apr. 25, 2001 at 10:23 PM

Is Los Angeles Independent Media on a Christian Crusade? The front and center picture on the LA Independent Media website of "Raza Unida" showing the US and Mexico "Raza" (presumably Latinos who are Christians) united by a Christian cross is a clear sign that LA Independent Media is promoting a Christian Crusade, which by definition is anti-Semitic, anti-Communist and anti-science. These positions are obviously antithetical to Independent Media and its supporters.

These positions are obviously antithetical to Independent Media and its supporters. Science literally means knowledge and religion is superstition. There is no such thing as race; we are all simply human beings. In a capitalist society, we are divided by class and the capitalist class promotes divisions by color and gender. Independent Media is all about promoting unity of the workingclass to end capitalism and promoting knowledge, which is to say science. I strongly urge that the "La Raza" photo be removed from the Los Angeles Independent Media website immediately.

I think you're jumping into conclusions.

Calm down dear.

No one is anti-semetic.

the San Diego IMC posted that picture up.

If anyone is Christian its the Mexicans. It was after all chicano park day, and so that logo basically was just one of many displayed at the cultural event.

that is a very popular mexican american logo, and it was taken off of

a t-shirt that someone took a picture of.

it was taken from chicano park's celebration...

no need to be paranoid.

if you need more chicano culture explanation on the image, i'd be happy to explain the insignia on it...

thanks,

z

Not all christians are right wing

As the person who took the photo and posted it to the news wire (I don;t know who put it on the breaking news column) I would like to respond. to me the picture was an example of a lot of Chicano art that I have seen: that combines images of traditional religion and progressive iconography. In case you didn't notice, the rosary is entwined with barbed wire. This is similar to the pañuelo art which has flourished in prisons of the southwest, in which chicano artists draw on handkerchiefs with ball point pen or pencil. That work is full of icons such as roses (often with sharp thorns), crosses, and barbed wire.

During the Sandinista years in Nicaragua there were many progressive catholics schooled in liberation theology who were active revolutionaries. Much of the art and culture of the Sandinista years has crosses and other religious symbols. What made the Nicaraguan revolution so powerful (that the US had to spend billions in fighting it overtly and covertly) was the UNITY that brought anarchists, catholics, communists, feminists, and many other groups to work collaborative in UNITY. To me that is what is important. To assume the sort of negativity you express works against that and weakens us all.
