The truly remarkable thing about Monday's march aside from it's size, was the creative energy of it's participants. There were thousands of beautiful banners, giant puppets, and colorful homemade placards. In this photo you can see just one of the positively MONUMENTAL Nuclear Missile balloons constructed by "California Peace Action." There were four such leviathan inflatable missiles carried through the streets that day. Each had a different message written on it's side. The one in my photograph read; " Billion a year for Nuclear Weapons... Pennies for our Schools! www.capa.org." This tremendous march of many thousands was IGNORED by the news media.. instead, the press focused on the spectacle of Police forcefully breaking up a Rock Concert at the conclusion of the day's protest. This book by Rick Paul Springer tells the story of confronting a former president ( Ronald Reagan ) in public ( in a reasonably respectfull manner, read the book to find out how ) in order to bring attention to nuclear testing on Western Shoshone lands in 1992 and going to jail for it.
Rick Paul Springer is a gentle, humorous, veteren activist who shows that non-violent activism in not for wimps and if done creativly and inteligently is highly effective.
In my opinion this is a message vital for this time.
The book gives homage to some of the many heroic individuals in the anti-nuclear movement which brings together generations of people from all walks of life including World War Two vets, Indian activists, and many different public figures.
Springer goes into detail about his prison experience. In fact the book is as much about that as about nukes. He has alot to say about the scarry developments in our prison crazed society.
In short it's a book to read and pass on to a friend. It has a vital message about persistent, dedicated, thoughtfull action to fight evil.
