The theme of Monday's protest (8/13/2000), was "Human Need not Corporate Greed." An enormous crowd gathered at Pershing Square for a march to Staples Center. No fewer than 10,000 protestors participated in the mass demonstration, and many issues were addressed.

The truly remarkable thing about Monday's march aside from it's size, was the creative energy of it's participants. There were thousands of beautiful banners, giant puppets, and colorful homemade placards. In this photo you can see just one of the positively MONUMENTAL Nuclear Missile balloons constructed by "California Peace Action." There were four such leviathan inflatable missiles carried through the streets that day. Each had a different message written on it's side. The one in my photograph read; " Billion a year for Nuclear Weapons... Pennies for our Schools! www.capa.org." This tremendous march of many thousands was IGNORED by the news media.. instead, the press focused on the spectacle of Police forcefully breaking up a Rock Concert at the conclusion of the day's protest.
