The present endeavor seeks to reverse the Police State in the United States by halting abuses by the *fbi,police,cia in a manner that has never been seen before. DRM of certain bandwidths contains a notch, so I decided to take advantage of that by centering it at the pilot tone (this is the tone that turns on your stereo light)

because the pilot is in this notch, it doesn't interfere with the DRM signal. So now it's possible to have analog FM both mono AND stereo, AND DRM, AND have the DRM fit within the passband of a normal soundcard.

this means you can decode it with the soundcard you already have, you don't need a special (expensive) non-standard card..

plus listen to regular FM - in stereo

no one's ever thought of this before. the closest they have is called DRM+, (mode E) which occupies the entire FM channel (100.kHz) so you can't even have analog FM mono much less stereo, or RDS or SCA channels.

the next best thing was called "FM-eXtra" which was about the same thing, but allowed FM mono, and with reduced performance, stereo (it occupied the RDS and SCA channel spaces) but they went bankrupt and are now called "Vu Cast"..

you need special equipment for both DRM + and Vu Cast - even a 192.kHz recording soundcard isn't good enough, because the upper edge of the signal hits 100.kHz and a 192.kHz soundcard rolls off at below 96.kHz, so even the best soundcard you can get, isn't quite good enough..

with mine an ordinary soundcard works, plus you retain FM mono AND stereo, AND RDS, AND up to 3 SCA channels (the third SCA channel is considered non-standard, but I and some other people use it too - it's analog TV's SAP channel)

the space between the mono signal to the lower sideband of the stereo signal is normally un-occupied. Only the pilot should be there, and there's suppose to be a 'guard band' on both sides of it, to aid locking onto the pilot..

So I've lowered the amplitude of the DRM signal to -20.dB below the pilot, which the stereo decoder then regards as noise and ignores. (at higher amplitudes I found it made the pilot lock unstable which caused a weak fluttering distortion sound in the stereo image) this is similar to what IBOC does to meet channel mask regulations. (IBOC is entirely outside the 100.kHz channel but it's much weaker, so it technically falls within the regulations) but with IBOC you need a whole new radio, and it's proprietary and requires licensing and royalty fees (which are 'folded into' the price you pay for the new radio)

this hybrid DRM Opus I've come up with (inserting it between the mono and the stereo part of analog FM with it's notch centered on the pilot) is all free & open source, and allows you to use your existing radio & soundcard :)

I tried this before with a conventional (analog) stereo exciter and the pilot didn't match up well enough with the notch in the DRM signal, and it would drift, so they ended up interfering with eachother - the 'trick' is to generate both in software in the same computer, so now they're perfectly in phase and stay that way.
