Got there late, got roadblocked, and saw the march go by. Cops cleared out the neighborhood for a couple blocks.

There was even a tv show about it, called SWAT.
In addition to the "bad guys" SWAT was used to attack the good guys, to break strikes by the UFW, and to attack the Black Panthers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SWAT SWAT was created by the infamous Daryl Gates, whose legacy includes the LAPD's use of the choke-hold, which was eventually ended after controversy about how many people were killed. The choke hold was the fighting tactic that the police in NY used that killed Eric Garner.
List of 16 LAPD deaths due to the choke hold, 1975 to 1982. 12 of 16 were Black men, and the other four were White men.
