On Sunday July 20th, in response to the latest incursion by Israeli forces into the Gaza Strip, protests erupted world wide on every continent and in many countries out of outrage for the current West Bank Israeli incursion.
There was a spirited Sunday protest at the Federal Building on Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles of about 3000 people that was fervent and mildly disruptive to traffic. This was the second protest in two weeks with the first rally resulting in some clashes between Israeli and Palestinian activists ending in four arrests and one homeland security officer discharging a firearm into the air.
The crowd was overwhelmingly family centered with many children, parents, grandparents and extended relatives all marching together down Wilshire Boulevard to the Israeli Consulate. There were Jewish protesters carrying signs against the Israeli action and surprisingly no counter pro Israel protests. This was probably due to the rally from the week before at the Federal Building.
There was a good representation of Angelenos in general.
People protested who had been directly affected by the invasion such as Abir El Zawidi who lost five family members.
There were calls for divestment, calls for the President Obama to more forcefully intervene. There were pleas for a cease fire and a reversal of the control state that Israel has instituted since the first Intifada.
There were many signs that compared Israel's actions to that of the Nazi germany.
The answer coalition was the main organizer with a plethora of other groups providing support. The march itself was very spirited with many people concerned by the situation their family members and friends are in that are living in the West Bank.
The police / security response was generally self controlled and busied itself with keeping the protesters out of traffic. However, several billy club bearing riot phalanxes formed at the conclusion of the rally whilst the activists were going to their respective cars and saying goodbye to one another.
It seemed to be a senseless and utterly unneeded performance.
This was a very nonviolent march.
The protests are in response to the invasion that began after a series of incidents that occurred in Gaza starting on June 12th with the kidnapping and murder of three hitchhiking Israeli teenagers, Eyal Yifrach, Naftali Fraenkel and Gilad Shaer.
Hamas leader Khaled Meshal disavowed the crimes but endorsed it's intent by saying "Blessed are the hands that carried it out." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khaled_Mashal
Israel blamed the kidnapping on Hamas and started "Operation Brother's Keeper" which initiated a large push into the West Bank and resulted in the arrest of Hamas leaders, both political and operative along with former government ministers. 300 people were eventually put into custody.
The violence escalated with the burning alive of Palestinian teenager Mohammed Abu Khdeir, and the beating of his American cousin, Tarek Abul Keir.
On June 28th, rockets are launched into Israel from the Gaza Strip. By June 29th Israel states that 62 rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel.
On July 8th Israeli forces started "Operation Protective Edge " with airstrikes and the calling up of reservists.
On July 13th Israel launches a boots on the ground incursion.
For a list of the civilian casualties stemming from Operation Protective edge Wikipedia is keeping a current list. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Israeli_strikes_and_Palestinian_casualties_in_Operation_Protective_Edge
Many world leaders and groups are accusing Israel of committing atrocities and war crimes.
At this date of July 22nd 2014, Israeli forces have bombed or evacuated with bombing warnings several hospitals including the Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital and al Wafa rehabilitation hospital. Medical supplies are becoming scarce and the electricity is only operating between 4 to 8 hours per day.

Israeli forces are dropping warning bombs on houses and giving the residents the problematic option of evacuating in five minutes before larger ordinances are fired. Israeli leaflets were dropped on towns and villages in Gaza forcing initially over 100,00 people to flee their homes. At this date some 118,300 people have been displaced to 77 U.N. shelters or wherever they can find safety according to the Guardian.Few are allowed to leave the West Bank.Gaza Officials say that 475 houses have been destroyed, 2644 are partially damaged while 46 schools, 56 Mosques and 7 hospitals have been damaged by Isreali bombs.
Israel is also being accused of using illegal and experimental weaponry in the form of D.I.M.E bombs, phosphorus weapons and depleted uranium munitions. Each of these weapons yields injuries that are essentially untreatable; Resulting in decapitations, point of attack amputations, irreversible organ damage, birth defects and deep burns amongst other inhumane effects.

Youssef Abul Resh, Undersecretary of the Health Ministry in Gaza, stated, “Medical teams have registered injuries consistent with those caused by DIME [dense inert metal explosives] and other banned weapons.”
He added, “Israel has mercilessly targeted Palestinian civilians, leaving many of them with life-threatening injuries and future handicaps.”

Dr. Mads Gilbert, a Norwegian ER physician working in Gaza has issued an open letter to the world.
Here is his wikipedia curriculum vitae http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mads_Gilbert
This is the letter concerning the conflict
The last night was extreme. The "ground invasion" of Gaza resulted in scores and carloads with maimed, torn apart, bleeding, shivering, dying - all sorts of injured Palestinians, all ages, all civilians, all innocent.
The heroes in the ambulances and in all of Gaza's hospitals are working 12-24 hour shifts, grey from fatigue and inhuman workloads (without payment all in Shifa for the last 4 months), they care, triage, try to understand the incomprehensible chaos of bodies, sizes, limbs, walking, not walking, breathing, not breathing, bleeding, not bleeding humans. HUMANS!
Now, once more treated like animals by "the most moral army in the world" (sic!).
My respect for the wounded is endless, in their contained determination in the midst of pain, agony and shock; my admiration for the staff and volunteers is endless, my closeness to the Palestinian "sumud" gives me strength, although in glimpses I just want to scream, hold someone tight, cry, smell the skin and hair of the warm child, covered in blood, protect ourselves in an endless embrace - but we cannot afford that, nor can they.
Ashy grey faces - Oh NO! Not one more load of tens of maimed and bleeding, we still have lakes of blood on the floor in the ER, piles of dripping, blood-soaked bandages to clear out - oh - the cleaners, everywhere, swiftly shovelling the blood and discarded tissues, hair, clothes, cannulas - the leftovers from death - all taken away ... to be prepared again, to be repeated all over. More then 100 cases came to Shifa in the last 24 hrs. Enough for a large well trained hospital with everything, but here - almost nothing: no electricity, water, disposables, drugs, OR-tables, instruments, monitors - all rusted and as if taken from museums of yesterday's hospitals. But they do not complain, these heroes. They get on with it, like warriors, head on, enormously resolute.
And as I write these words to you, alone, on a bed, my tears flow, the warm but useless tears of pain and grief, of anger and fear. This is not happening!
An then, just now, the orchestra of the Israeli war-machine starts its gruesome symphony again, just now: salvos of artillery from the navy boats just down on the shores, the roaring F16, the sickening drones (Arabic 'Zennanis', the hummers), and the cluttering Apaches. So much made in and paid by the US.
Mr. Obama - do you have a heart?
I invite you - spend one night - just one night - with us in Shifa. Disguised as a cleaner, maybe.
I am convinced, 100%, it would change history.
Nobody with a heart AND power could ever walk away from a night in Shifa without being determined to end the slaughter of the Palestinian people.
But the heartless and merciless have done their calculations and planned another "dahyia" onslaught on Gaza.
The rivers of blood will keep running the coming night. I can hear they have tuned their instruments of death.
Please. Do what you can. This, THIS cannot continue.
