Has KPFK's GM Duncan just dis-appeared?

by kpfk loyal volunteer Sunday, Apr. 20, 2014 at 12:35 PM

More confusing information appears to say that Bernard Duncan who thought he was moving UP some ladder, may have fallen off, gone to NZ to return home and his girlfriend, or gotten sick of all the mess served up at Pacifica ? Who knows what really happens when secrecy and silence and non-transparency reigns in this nonprofit and non-informative fdtn, never telling on itself and it's fluctuations ? How confusing. Where is the man now ? Why is he not fulfilling the apparent nomination to be interim Exe Director, seemingly authorized by KPFA people?

another repost from another source who knows a whole more than we in LA ever can find out:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++

“IED [interim Executive Director of Pacifica] Vanishing Act and Who's Representing Whom?

posted April 18, 2014

Berkeley-Appointed/disputed/interim executive director Bernard Duncan failed to appear without notice at two scheduled meetings on Thursday, the first with national office administrative staff and the second, the weekly senior management call.

Duncan reported illness and may have left the Berkeley area on Thursday after missing both scheduled meetings. Duncan appeared on KPFA briefly during the April 15th fundraising drive. His full interview can be heard here.

http://www.kpfa.org/archive/id/101941. (Duncan's interview is midway through the hour-long program). ….“

+++++++++++++++++++

If any other Indy reader knows more information about Duncan's doings or Pacifica's solutions or breakups, please share it on this site as Los Angeles is desert dry with no information or updates of what affects us seriously.

KPFK is one of the 2 ongoing vital radio stations that have most at stake at this time. Berkeley seems to be creating their own separatist group [not all at KPFA - but a strong contingent is acting in a we-want-our-own-separated-way] to break up Pacifica perhaps and to take the power to rule their worlds for themselves mostly. The older models are breaking down and the chaos continues...for now.

Thanks for posting info

I'm still not really grasping it all, but it's useful to read to try and understand the mess.

I'm just one data point here, but my ilstening to KPFK has declined a lot. A small bit of it is just based on content: the Gary Null fund drives and Blosdale pitches of whatever sometimes piss me off. A larger part is due to changing listening habits that have me downloading shows from the internet a lot more.

I used to listen to kpfk for a few hours a day, but now it's more like half an hour to an hour a day, if that. What I do, instead, is download from the kpfk archvies, download podcasts, and stream from websites. Local news went down the tubes years ago, and I started listening to KPCC a lot more.

This is serious. I used to listen to around 10 to 15 hours a week, and now it's probably close to 2 or 3. And don't think it's other stations doing the damage. Other stations get maybe twice as much of my time now - but in the past, they got around equal time, and the total time was closer to 20 to 30 hours a week.

My total time is still close to 20 hours a week, but at least half goes to internet.

I watch approximately 1 or 2 hours of TV a week, but easily watch 5 or more hours of video online. Some weeks, it's probably over 10 hours, and lately, a lot of it is instructional material. This stuff competes directly with KLCS and KCET.

The rest of my media screen time is spent reading, writing, or working on side projects.

How is KPFK going to survive with people like me?

KPFK + Pacifica audience declines, a lot

by kpfk loyal volunteer Monday, Apr. 21, 2014 at 5:55 PM

re “Nobody” - and more

It's been written recently exposed what most of those who listen, pay and wonder that both Pacifica's other stations and KPFK have had a significant decline of listenership and this has caused some question of getting funding from CPB. See their info elsewhere written. Their audiences are in decline and thus some funding is also endangered or already partly gone. Not only from those who listen and like it well enough to pay up, but the govt funding too.

There have also been problems with auditing inadequacies that brings in the FCC and fines.

Many of us have also found KPCC to be a good - tho very different - way to keep up with much local and national and elsewheres news. And even hearing a 1-sentence informative statements instigates, so we can then look it up further on internet if interested.

The BBC comes on at 11pm- 2am on KPCC or also KPBS [from San Diego adjacent to KPCC on dial] , and tho it occurs late at night, it is the very best 'news' we find on radio locally, as poor ordinary radios can pick up only what transmits sufficiently clearly to be able to pick them up.

The internet is not a substitute for radio for many of us, because it requires a different kind of attention, And the work involved to get to station, and cost of equipment and electricity as well doesn’t make it comparable for some. To listen to a radio, without actually having to sit or select or stay on line means regular FM radio seems preferable, tho everyone is constantly told to go to the internet for everything anything all the time !

When a mind catches something important or relevant, funny how attention suddenly shoots over to what is being said ..on radio.. again. Then full attention is momentarily diverted to what is interesting and the dull sounds of all the rest of programming that is less worthwhile is tuned down. Radio has a special process of being subtle, less intrusive than other media, and yet can deliver what is needed or important. For some radio is a favorite way to listen, learn, and yet do many other activities, even sleep !

All without the costs of other fancy equipment involved. Luckily there is more than 1 way to find the same or similar out-sources – this is the benefits of every cheaper or more fancy technology. The surveillance and commercials that come with all the updated techy stuff is not.

Sometimes we wonder how others can live with their eyes stuck on screens and tiny devices instead of on each other human beings that are so fascinating and revealing. But choices have consequences, and most do not look further than the short term need or whatever their peers are doing and then it’s just easy to do the same. Easier. Maybe.

The KPFK info updates here are for those who care enough about different-thinking and the ideas propounded by KPFK’s variety et al, even when their management / LSB’s words and promises do not match their stated intentions.

Disillusionment means just that - no more illusions, no more believing what is said on air at any Pacifica station - that continually and still claims to be better than others. But they are not that different in many ways [ tho denied, but found out if one pokes further than the outside surface].

However, to have Alternatives and wild weird odd and the occasional surprising viewpoint or elucidations makes some of what is still played on KPFK valuable. Just to have another resource, one not like the others, even if much of the station / programming is actually deteriorating, and whether KFPK people admit it or not.

The continual secrecy and denial and hiding of all operational-structural-management-functional information is most disturbing, as do the NSA and CIA and them all - have ways that have been exposed that others. Pacifica/ KPFK are doing similar stuff - hiding what they do, how, when, why and what is actually going on --and quickly deny it when found out or whistled at.

We want to keep KFPK alive and sharing whatever, even if we dont agree or always like Everything...as that would be impossible. The turmoil that is breaking up the foundation currently may be a beneficial incident[s] ...as may be seen later in hindsight. However it all turns out.

Whether the stations are sold off and separated. Or whether the hired ED stays and by strength of will and intelligence cleans out the rotted parts that decay the whole system. Either way, change is happening and all we want is TO KNOW, and as sponsors have the NEED TO KNOW what is happening to our dollars, our ability to have this odd-one-out of the ordinary playing on air for a while longer.

Why there is such silence in LA about KPFK - except for what is written or reposted here - is also strange. Many things that occur are a sudden surprise because they have been covered up and hidden for so long.
