In addition to his hyper-paranoid prattle about all things Israel, it appears that anti-Israel blogger Richard Silverstein has taken upon himself the new vocation of International Sheriff of Palestine county. In three separate incidents this weekend the possibly demented Detective went on a wacky law enforcement spree,

As reported on israellycool this past Friday, Silverstein relentlessly badgered Gazan activist Sally Idwedar for criticizing the Hamas terror organization. In the bizarre, lengthy twitter exchange, Silverstein excoriated Idwedar for daring to place any blame for Gaza’s misery upon the hardworking public servants of Hamas instead of upon Israel (or even Fatah). At one point it seemed that Sheriff Silverstein was trying to tip-off his Hamas deputies about a possible traitor in their midst, tweeting “A supposed Gazan who won’t criticize Israel. Hmmm.” and “You’re not critical of Israel but fiercely critical of Hamas. Hmm.”

That same day while on his regular Twitter patrol the cranky Cop interrogated StandWithUs Shaliach Hen Mazzig . Hen recently wrote an article for the Times of Israel exposing the dark underbelly of Israel hatred in the Pacific Northwest. Detective Dick wanted answers! “At which events & on which dates did u meet professors in Seattle & Portland who made statements u claim? What were their names?” demanded the idiotic investigator. Having no apparent respect for the law, Mazzig responded “who are you? Why should I?”

Until today Sheriff Silverstein was on patrol only within the boundaries of the interwebs. Silverstein arrived at Skinner Auditorium at Seattle’s Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral with the Parent’s Circle lecture already well in progress. After scanning the room, Silverstein quickly spotted his quarry. A young woman was videotaping the Parent’s Circle lecture. Disrupting the program in progress the geriatric Gendarme frantically rushed up to the woman who was taping the event and demanded of her “who are you with!?”. All heads in the auditorium spun towards the frantic Silverstein. “She is with Standwithus!” he exclaimed, referring to a local Israel advocacy organization. Silverstein demanded that the woman immediately stop videotaping the lecture, his antics bringing the program to a halt.

Clearly annoyed with Silverstein’s dingbattery, one of the presenters, Robi Damelin, left her seat on the panel and walked towards Silverstein and his suspect. Demelin, staring directly at Silverstein while addressing the woman taping the event, urged her to please continue videotaping. With that an ashen faced Silverstein slunk out of the room, not to return for the duration of the program.

While Mr. Silverstein often seems to be hanging out on the other side of sanity, his latest outbursts and our inexplicable compassion leads us to suggest that it may be time for him to take a long vacation.

Note: The Parent’s Circle-Families Forum self describes as “a grassroots organization promoting reconciliation as an alternative to hatred and revenge”. The group brings together Israeli parents whose children lost their lives at the hands of Palestinian terrorists and Palestinian parents whose children died, mostly during violent actions against Israelis. They engage in multiple forums, finance a Summer Camp and produce films to further their agenda. The group has been criticized for placing the bulk of the blame for the Arab-Israeli conflict at the hands of Israel. We will write more about that and them in a future post.

I tried to confirm this indeed occurred, and sure enough, there is some (albeit shaky) video of the incident.

At about 21 seconds in the video, you can see Silverstein (with the glob of white hair) and someone else kneeling over Hen Mazzig and the woman mentioned in the post. You can then see Robi Damelin (in the midst of getting introduced) walk over to the woman, after which she apparently tells her she can continue videoing. You can almost catch Silverstein and friend walk away.

I also asked the woman in question what happened, and she told me the following:

I was there to listen to what they had to say and I wanted to video. The panel saw I was videoing from the very beginning and did not have a problem with it. Richard did! He even tweeted that 2 bullies were at the event. BULLY..sitting and listening is being a bully??!!! And furthermore Richard has no idea what my opinion is on the subject!! The panel wants there message seen and heard they stand behind their view point and had no problem with me videoing. Robi came to my defense when Richard was VERY upset..she came to me and said “Please, you can video.” I appreciated that a lot and I appreciate that she is for open dialogue unlike Richard and people like him..Robi even shut a woman down when she attacked Israel..she told her she is closed-minded and didn’t listen to anything that was said there that day.

Richard Silverstein is one of the more shrill and dishonest commentators in a very crowded anti-Zionist blogosphere and – as the title of his blog, Tikkun Olam, (To heal the world) suggests – continues to make a mockery of such self-styled progressive bloggers.

Several months ago, for instance, he thought nothing of exposing the identity of a Zionist blogger – including his address – potentially placing his entire family at risk.

For those unfamiliar with his brand of “liberalism” and “social justice”, it includes expressions of support for a one-state solution, defenses of terror groups like Hamas, and characterizations of IDF soldiers as “bestial” and “subhuman“.

He has even likened Israel to Nazi Germany.

More recently, Silverstein engaged in a horrendous smear of Jewish Chronicle editor Stephen Pollard, suggesting that The JC knowingly associated with BNP member Carlos Cortiglia - a claim which is beyond ludicrous and grossly defamatory.

Silverstein’s original story about the row over Cortiglia (which he later slightly revised) even suggested that the BNP candidate had been hired as “a columnist” by The JC. In fact, as we reported at the time, The JC originally had an open blogging platform which allowed literally anyone to post, including Cortiglia. But, as soon as Pollard was alerted to the BNP membership affiliation of Cortiglia they immediately barred his access to The JC site.

Even the revised post at Silverstein’s blog still shamelessly claimed (in the caption under the photo of Cortiglia) that The JC “offered” the white supremacist a blogging platform, which was a complete lie.

So, with such a disgraceful record of smears, distortions, outright lies (and various false “scoops”) – in the service of his anti-Israel political agenda – why on earth would any mainstream, “respectable” media outlet legitimize Silverstein?

Hen Mazzig, one of the protagonists in the Silverstein Bullygate affair, recently wrote of the anti-Israel bigotry and hostility he encountered when speaking on college campuses, high schools, and churches in the US.

His piece has since gone viral, and while the entire thing is worth reading, one part in particular stands out for me.

At a BDS event in Portland, a professor from a Seattle university told the assembled crowd that the Jews of Israel have no national rights and should be forced out of the country. When I asked, “Where do you want them to go?” she calmly answered, “I don’t care. I don’t care if they don’t have any place else to go. They should not be there.” When I responded that she was calling for ethnic cleansing, both she and her supporters denied it. And during a presentation in Seattle, I spoke about my longing for peace between Israel and the Palestinians. When I was done, a woman in her 60’s stood up and yelled at me, “You are worse than the Nazis. You are just like the Nazi youth!” A number of times I was repeatedly accused of being a killer, though I have never hurt anyone in my life. On other occasions, anti-Israel activists called me a rapist. The claims go beyond being absurd – in one case, a professor asked me if I knew how many Palestinians have been raped by IDF forces. I answered that as far as I knew, none. She triumphantly responded that I was right, because, she said, “You IDF soldiers don’t rape Palestinians because Israelis are so racist and disgusted by them that you won’t touch them.”

Yep. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Interestingly enough, this is not even the first time the accusation has been made.

A research paper that won a Hebrew University teachers’ committee prize finds that the lack of IDF rapes of Palestinian women is designed to serve a political purpose.

The abstract of the paper, authored by doctoral candidate Tal Nitzan, notes that the paper shows that “the lack of organized military rape is an alternate way of realizing [particular] political goals.”

The next sentence delineates the particular goals that are realized in this manner: “In the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it can be seen that the lack of military rape merely strengthens the ethnic boundaries and clarifies the inter-ethnic differences – just as organized military rape would have done.”

The paper further theorizes that Arab women in Judea and Samaria are not raped by IDF soldiers because the women are de-humanized in the soldiers’ eyes.

The paper was published by the Hebrew University’s Shaine Center, based on the recommendation of a Hebrew University professors’ committee headed by Dr. Zali Gurevitch.

“I do not have the entire text in front of me,” Gurevitch said, when contacted by Arutz-7, “and I don’t think we can jump to conclusions based on partial sentences, but I can say the following: This was a very serious paper that asked two important questions: Is the relative lack of IDF rapes a noteworthy phenomenon, and if so, why is it that there are so few IDF rapes when in similar situations around the world, rape is much more common?”

And let’s not forget Deborah Orr’s argument at the time of the Gilad Shalit-for-terrorists-exchange.

Folks, let’s face it. Haters of Israel invariably don’t base their views on factual arguments or logic. They simply can’t. They base it on sheer ignorance or a loathing of Jews.

When blogger Richard Silverstein isn’t expressing support for the end of the Jewish state, defending terror groups like Hamas, or engaging in smears and reckless attacks against his opponents, he’s often busy peddling false “scoops“ based on little or no evidence.

These “scoops” by Silverstein (who’s an occasional contributor to ‘Comment is Free’) at a blog he calls ‘Tikun Olam’, have at times been cited by the BBC, Der Spiegel, The Daily Telegraph, and the New York Times.
