Although the sudden high rate Arctic methane increase at Svalbard in late 2010 data set applies to only a short time interval, similar sudden methane concentration peaks also occur at Barrow point and the effects of a major methane build-up has been observed using all the major scientific observation systems. Giant fountains/torches/plumes of methane entering the atmosphere up to 1 km across have been seen on the East Siberian Shelf. This methane eruption data is so consistent and aerially extensive that when combined with methane gas warming potentials, Permian extinction event temperatures and methane lifetime data it paints a frightening picture of the beginning of the now uncontrollable global warming induced destabilization of the subsea Arctic methane hydrates on the shelf and slope which started in late 2010. This process of methane release will accelerate exponentially, release huge quantities of methane into the atmosphere and lead to the demise of all life on earth before the middle of this century.

Digital radio in high quality stereo normally cannot be done (because of licensing issues no digital modulator is allowed to include stereo at any usable bitrate) but once I worked out a way to convert HTTP icecast HE-AAC+ streams into UDP, this opened the door to digital stereo. The next step is streaming Opus (which is far better than HE-AAC+), but I'm waiting on a win32 build of the newest icecast server for that. Eventually streaming Opus will eliminate these hassles and it will become widespread, enabling (at last) DRM stereo.

If environmental problems are so serious, if we are really threatened by global ecological collapse, why is no one doing anything about it?


Before I explain why, it is important to state that:

1.) ecosystems do not react linearly to change, but abruptly switch states.

2.) that the global biosphere, or global network of ecosystems, is threatening to shift states (read: collapse) - if just 7% more ecosystems shift states (collapse at 50% and we are currently at 43%)

3.) managers, planners, and politicians are not coordinating with scientists or experts.

4.) evolution is far less likely than extinction.


So, why is no one doing anything about the very real issues threatening long term human survival?

I think it is safe to qualify the situation as an emergency, and thus we should look at research into how people react in emergencies, or why they do not.


A 5-step process for helping during an emergency was first characterized by Darley and Latané in 1968 :



The 1st step is to notice the emergency itself, which can be hindered by distractions or preoccupation.


The 2nd step is to classify it as an emergency, meaning to recognize what is really going on, and this can be hindered by pluralistic ignorance — when a group of people do not notice an emergency because those around them are simultaneously not noticing or reacting to the emergency: it is thus assumed there is no emergency.


The 3rd step is to take responsibility in the emergency. Studies show that the more people present at an emergency, the lower the chance is that someone will help. This is known as the bystander effect and creates a diffusion of responsibility, which leads the individuals to feeling less responsible for what is going on: “not my problem.” This means that a lone individual is far more likely to help you than that same person within a group.


The 4th step is to know what to do, and the 5th step is to do it. But, even after taking responsibility and knowing what to do, it is possible someone will not help due to social inhibition. This is where the social context, or social norms, prevent or dissuade helping in the situation.



Most people are busy: they do not have time to think about world problems, let alone world problems which have yet to manifest. Most people do not realize how serious environmental problems are: they think the only problem facing us is global warming, and picture this as it becoming a little warmer in the summers. Most people feel like a faceless member of humanity with no reason to help solve these problems, and refrain from taking responsibility, even if they know what is going on.



Many people who know what is going on and have taken responsibility for helping, do not know what to do. They do not realize that even communicating with others about these problems, helping making others aware, taking the time to discuss this with people experiencing dissonance makes quite a difference.


When just 10% of the population holds an unshakable belief, then it quickly spreads to almost everyone (Szymanski 2011). If people understood what was going on then there would be more people taking responsibility, more people brainstorming over solutions, and more work being done to avoid global ecological collapse.

The only step left is to do it. So talk to others about these issues, to learn about them, and start taking steps towards solving problems. Taking steps towards preventing our own demise, taking steps towards pulling our collective head out of the sand.



We have a “hyperbolic discount function” for risk – the farther away the risk is in time, the less we are motivated by it.

This is caused by the fact that our emotions are wired in much more strongly to our reptilian and limbic complexes than to our cortex. That’s why we use adjectives like “cool”, “calm” and “dispassionate” to describe intellectual analysis, and adjectives like “hot” and “frantic” to describe feelings.

Very few people get really emotionally aroused by reading facts.

Even then, it’s not the bald facts that freak most of us out, but their implications for the people and things we care deeply about.

We become aroused to action only when we perceive an immediate threat to something we have feelings about – and that threat needs to be very immediate indeed.

Until the threat materializes before us we have a huge ability to lull ourselves with the same “delusions of reprieve” used by concentration camp victims right up to the moment that the gas chamber doors closed behind them.

Nationwide Air Sampling Confirms ‘Methane Emissions Across Large Parts Of The U.S. Are Higher Than Currently Known’

After taking a rented camper outfitted with special equipment to measure methane on a cross-continent drive, a UC Santa Barbara scientist has found that methane emissions across large parts of the U.S. are higher than currently known, confirming what other more local studies have found. Their research is published in the journal Atmospheric Environment.

Leifer was joined by two UCSB undergraduate students on the road trip from Los Angeles to Florida, taking a primarily southern route through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, and along the Gulf of Mexico. They used specialized instrumentation, a gas chromatograph, to measure methane. The device was mounted in the RV, with an air ram on the roof that collected air samples from in front of the vehicle.

“We tried to pass through urban areas during nighttime hours, to avoid being stuck in traffic and sampling mostly exhaust fumes,” Leifer said. “Someone was always monitoring the chromatograph, and when we would see a strong signal, we would look to see what potential sources were in the area, and modify the survey to investigate and, if possible, circumnavigate potential sources.”

The researchers meandered slowly through areas of fossil fuel activity, such as petroleum and natural gas production, refining, and distribution areas, and other areas of interest. The wide range of sources studied included a coal-loading terminal, a wildfire, and wetlands.

The team analyzed the data in conjunction with researchers at the University of Bremen, Germany, who analyzed inventories and satellite data from the Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY) instrument onboard the European Space Agency’s (ESA) ENVISAT satellite to confirm the finding of strong methane sources in regions of fossil fuel activity. The surface measurements found methane levels increased as the researchers moved toward Houston, and then decreased as they continued westward –– the same trend observed in satellite data spanning the continent.

Previous methane studies have focused primarily on large-scale airborne data, which were challenging to separate from local sources, according to Leifer. In fact, clear identification of individual sources often could not be conducted, requiring computer models and other surface measurements.

The team compared maps of estimated methane emissions based on data from the International Energy Agency of the U.S. Department of Energy with satellite methane maps. They found that, in some cases, to explain observed higher methane concentrations required higher emissions than current emission maps present, particularly in large regions of fossil fuel industrial activity. In other cases, though, they could rule out that wetlands such as swamps may have been important. In such cases, separating wetland methane contributions from fossil fuel industrial contributions was not possible with their approach, Leifer said, “This is a topic we are investigating further through new research,” he added.

“Methane is the strongest human greenhouse gas on a political or short timescale, and also has more bang for the buck in terms of addressing climate change,” said Leifer. “This research supports other recent findings suggesting that fugitive emissions from fossil fuel industrial activity actually are the largest methane source. This clearly indicates a need for efforts to focus on reducing these methane emissions.”

The researchers found the highest methane concentrations in areas with significant refinery activity, and in California in a Central Valley region of oil and gas production. Methane levels near refineries were not uniform, varying greatly from spot to spot and at different times. Nighttime concentrations were dramatically enhanced when the winds died down, forming a calm, shallow atmospheric layer near the surface, according to Leifer.

Perhaps the most surprising discovery was made in the Los Angeles area, where the study highlighted the importance of geologic methane emissions in the North Los Angeles Basin, centered on the La Brea Tar Pits. Rough estimation of emissions from the data suggests 10-20 percent of the methane emissions from Los Angeles could be natural geologic, influenced by the vast number of abandoned wells throughout the area.

A new study just released, which relies entirely on E.P.A. gross beta data, (which is also what I consult for my weekly average radiation level reports,) confirms exposure to fukushima radiation. The west coast received an average of 8 times normal background level, with some cities receiving up to 38 times. And the rest of CONUS received an average of 2 times normal background level. (this is only EPA data and only for beta - this doesn't include powerful gamma emitters such as xenon, so the actual amounts are considerably higher)


Shortly after the disaster, a report was made that showed increased infant mortality on the west coast. This report was widely dismissed for faulty methodology, but mostly the authors themselves were attacked.

This new report, CONFIRMS, the earlier report. You will recall at the time that report was released, authorities were still claiming effectively, NO, radiation would come here to the U. S., that the fukushima disaster was not nearly as bad as chernobyl, and there was no need to worry, to stay indoors, to avoid rain, to check the radiation levels yourself, etc.

We now know fukushima is many times worse than chernobyl, that the authorities were lying and downplaying how bad it is, just as they've always done with all radiological disasters like 3 mile island, where they claimed very little radiation escaped.

F.O.I.A. documents show they were understating the amount by at least 10,000 times, that the whole area should have been evacuated, and there is now a bad cluster of cancer, all around, but mostly downwind, from that disaster.


So the advice of the authorities was bogus, entirely concerned with business-as-usual, and protecting the nuclear death industry, and their only concern for the public, was keeping them from panicing, and thus disrupting commerce.


The advice I've been giving, in the weekly fukushima updates, has been proven accurate. This is because of a very simple concept.

I wouldn't advise anyone to expose themselves to any radiation that I myself wouldn't be willing to be exposed to.

The rules I've outlined, are my own personal rules.

Avoiding seafood, seaweed, staying indoors during high radiation periods, staying out of the rain, checking the rain for alpha emitters, greatly increasing antioxident intake, employing indoor dust filters and electrostatic collection, monitoring radiation levels.


You may have seen discussions about 'hot particles' and uranium/plutonium 'bucky balls'. About how they're too small to be trapped by air filters, even HEPA filters. Never mentioned is electrostatic filtering. This way of depositing the particles doesn't care how small they are, it works just as well for particles that pass right through ordinary filters, because it gives them an electrical charge, where they then become attracted to neutral or opposite charged surfaces.

Tests show that CRT's are very good electrostatic cleaners, so the more CRTs you have, the cleaner your air is, in the nano-particle range, which ordinary filters can't touch, and which are the most dangerous particles since they become lodged in the lungs and can't be expelled.

this is a very good reason to keep your old TV and computer monitors, and don't throw them out for the newer flat-screen displays.

For example the room I'm typing this in, contains 6 operating CRTs, which I dust with a wet rag every week or so. I check this dust for radioactivity, too.

For those who don't have the money to purchase an electrostatic air cleaner, 3 -4 CRT's work as well. (you can tell how well they're working by when you add more to the room, they all start collecting LESS dust, which means all dust is being collected.)

Radioactive dust isn't the only thing they protect you from, this scale of particles is harmful for nearly all types of dust excepting some biological types like pollen, dust mite fecal pellets, etc.

But most dust is silica fragments, which is quite harmful, so electrostatic collection is very effective in preventing lung injury, and protecting you from hot particles, if any are around.

Some were detected on the west coast, but I haven't seen any so far. (there would have to be a huge explosion throwing such dust into the air, traveling in the jet stream, to make it here) The only uranium dust we get here are virgin uranium from coal burning power plants. This uranium has a different signature than the depleted uranium used in munitions, althought not all the munitions use DU, some have been found to be virgin, and non-depleted uranium. It's not possible to tell virgin uranium munition dust from local coal generated dust, but very few munitions are made with virgin uranium, only about 3-4 %.

While uranium and lead are similar chemically and biologically, whether they're dangerous radiologically depends on the isotope.

even uranium 238 is slightly radioactive, but it's half-life is 4.5 billion years, and it's an alpha emitter, so unless you badly contaminate yourself internally, mainly by inhalation of uranium dust, it's safe to be around. The reason we don't see radioactive uranium, is because the nuke industry wants it all, in fact they use a very expensive process to separate it.

They take uranium ore, and crush it, dissolve it in acid, evaporate this which becomes 'yellowcake'. Then this is treated with hydrofluoric acid to make uranium hexafluoride gas. This gas is then run though a series of chromagraphic filters which separate the isotopes based on a slight physical difference between them (atomic weight).

(an alternate way to do it is by centrifugal separation)

By repeating this filtering process hundreds of times, they eventually end up with enriched uranium hexafluoride gas, which is then treated to remove the fluorine, leaving the metal as a powder. This power is then compressed under great pressure into pellets. The 'waste' uranium stream is likewise reduced back to the metal, and this is depleted uranium, which is only very slighly radioactive.

Slightly enough that if you place a chunk of it on a alpha detector, you only see a few clicks per minute.


On the other hand there are some highly radioactive isotopes of lead, so radioactive you can't get near them without receiving a harmful dose of radiation. Radon gas for example, decays into lead 210 which is highly radioactive, this is how radon is detected, by it's daughter product Pb-210, and what I'm checking for in the CRT dust.

The subject of radioactivity is a rather complicated one, many people spend years studying it. When you cannot understand yourself what the details are, and rely on someone else to break it down for you, you're really making a judgement call on how much you trust the person's values. My values are, I wouldn't expose anyone else to any radiation that I myself wouldn't be willing to be exposed to. That ANY radiation exposure is bad, even medical x-rays, that all forms of man-made radiation exposure is to be avoided, and even natural areas of high radiation should be avoided, like high altitudes, areas with radioactive rocks, or high levels of radon in groundwater, that there is no 'safe' level of exposure, and when man-made radiation is known to be around, you should minimize as much as possible your exposure to it, and consume antioxidants to provide some protection along with nutrient dense foods.

the digital station IS streaming - I call it the 'internet stream without the internet' when you decode it, it emerges from the decoder AS an internet stream which you can distribute in your own LAN (if you have a LAN - I bet you've only got one computer, I have 10)

the other station plays rock, and jazz on weekends like I used to years ago (a jazz show)

the other transmitters are much stronger. My antennas are hand made. TV antennas don't work well on FM, I tried that in 1980, where I aimed it at the 3'rd largest dorm building in the country, and gave out a phone number to call. I almost immediately started getting calls, requests for songs. 'Butt' I wasn't very far away. To cover most of town, a vertical 5/8'th wave ground plane is better. The two big transmitters have those, but the 3'rd auxiliary (originally only intended for my personal use here around the house) transmitter only uses a 1/4 wave wip, lower, with a rather poor ground plane, so it doesn't go as far.

Note that all 3 are way way above part 15 limits though. Also I'm setting up a 4'th station which is a lower quality crystal multiplier, which doesn't support stereo but it is fine for talk in mono (or digital)


All transmitters, antennas, audio processors and all other equipment is entirely designed & built by me.
