Colorado shooting suspect James Holmes: medical school dropout, loner

The Colorado theatre shooting suspect is said to be a loner who dropped out of medical school in June this year, described himself as 'quiet and easy going' on an online rental application.

24-year-old James Holmes abruptly withdrew from the University of Colorado School Of Medicine in Denver said the college spokeswoman, Jacque Montgomery on Friday, 20 July, 2012.

Montgomery said she had no idea when he started school and what prompted him to withdraw, just weeks before the young medico snapped, going on a shooting rampage inside a crowded Colorado theatre screening "Dark Knight"; killing twelve and wounding at least 50 others.

James Holmes had come to Colorado from California and resided on a third-floor apartment in North Aurora, a Denver suburb which is around four miles from the theatre where the mass shooting took place.

When Denver Post spoke to his neighbors they described James Holmes as a solitary kind who refused to acknowledge even when residents said a hello to him. One neighbor told the newspaper: “No one knew him … No one,” he emphasized.

Tom Mai, a retired electrical engineer who lives in the Rancho Penasquitos neighborhood where Holmes grew up, told LA Times, that James graduated from Westview High School in San Diego in 2006. But he could not find work even after graduating from UC Riverside in 2010 with a bachelor's in neuroscience.

Mai recollecting about Holmes' character said he was a very shy, well-mannered young man who was heavily involved in the local church activities. "He seemed to be a normal kid, I don't know what triggered it. This makes me very sad," Mai added grimly.

Reportedly Holmes had booby-trapped his apartment before driving off to carry out the killing spree at the packed theater comprising of a midnight crowd for “The Dark Knight Rises.” He had even left a song playing on repeat mode inside his home. On his kitchen wall was a poster hanging of Will Ferrell from the movie “Anchorman.”

Denver post reported that Holmes had moved into his brick apartment in May 2011. The Colorado shooting suspect’s neighbors were asked to evacuate in the hours following the killings since there was the risk from the explosives allegedly stocked there.

Last year on an online rental application, Holmes described himself as a “quiet and easy-going medical student” According to reports, he must have been a brilliant student as he was aspiring to do his Ph.D. in neuroscience.

San Diego police Lt Andra Brown held a press conference just outside James Holmes's mother's house in the Rancho Penasquitos, in northeast San Diego. Brown said: "The Holmes family is very upset by all of this. It is a tragic event and has taken everybody by surprise." According to him there was nothing to link the Holmes family home with the shooting.

The police spokesperson also provided a statement from the Holmes family in which they said their "hearts go out to those who [were] involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved."

In fact when Holmes mother was awakened on early Friday with word of the bloody Aurora, Colo., rampage, the dazed woman told ABC News “You have the right person … I need to call the police ... I need to fly out to Colorado.”

James Holmes who was apprehended by police outside the theater, is currently in police custody. FBI says that though he wore a gas mask during his attack, he was not a military veteran nor was he linked to any terrorist groups.

Occupy / Denver Anarchist Black Cross

by repost Monday, Jul. 23, 2012 at 5:42 PM

This is reposted from the Denver ABC website. TLDR version: the guy has nothing to do with a black bloc or ABC. It's a smear by a conspiracy theory group that has glommed onto Occupy in CO, and is intent on spreading false accusations and pushing anarchists and anarchism out of Occupy.

Locksley is a fucking liar.

----------------------------

The writing of this statement was prompted by rumors circulating the internet that the person alleged to have shot over 70 people in an Aurora movie theater on July 20 was a member of the Denver Anarchist Black Cross. These claims are patently and maliciously false. James Holmes is not a member of the Denver Anarchist Black Cross, nor is he known to us in any way. It should not have to be said, but we will say it anyway: The members of Denver ABC along with any anarchists we have ever met, would never condone the calculated and intentional killing of random people. We are in fact actively and daily engaged in work to stop such tragic and horrific acts of violence at a systemic level.

As residents of Denver it was with shock, horror, and great sadness that members of our collective awoke on July 20, 2012 to news of a mass shooting at a movie theater in nearby Aurora that left 12 people dead and some 59 people wounded. Many of us spent our day anxiously listening to the news, wondering if we knew anyone who had been hurt, or even worse, killed. As the day drug on, and we started to be able to piece together some of the details of the shooting, emotions ran high. We listened intently as family members described watching their children shot, and those of us who are parents held our children close to us, filled with dread and immense despair. All of us spent our day filled with love and empathy for those who had endured such tragedy.

As the morning turned to afternoon, our shock and horror was interrupted by alarm and anger, as we were notified that a group of people were using twitter and online forums to link our organization to the alleged shooter, James Holmes. What seems to have started as an online blog post from a very shady far right-wing blogger that the suspect was a “black bloc anarchist”, had spiraled into an allegation that the shooter was a member of the Denver Anarchist Black Cross. It is with the most vehement and stern feelings that we wish to set the record straight. Not only was James Holmes not a member of the Denver Anarchist Black Cross, but no one we know even knew him or had knowingly ever met him.

The rumor linking our organization to this individual seems to stem from Luke Rudowski, the founder of We Are Change, a right wing conspiracy theory based organization that found its roots in the early days of the Tea Party and has since latched onto the Occupy Wall Street movement. At 3:21pm, he tweeted out the following tweet: “this is going to come out in the MSM soon but my friends in Denver tell me James Holmes was apart (sic) of the Denver Anarchist Black Cross”.

This erroneous and malicious statement hit us like a sack of bricks. We were shocked. Horrified. Nauseated. This tweet went “viral” within moments, spreading across the more conspiracy based elements of the Occupy and Libertarian movements on twitter and then to online forums. Not only were anarchists to be vilified and condemned, but our specific organization became, and remains, a target.

No attempt was offered to give any evidence to the claim. Much like the supposed state agents and members of the “mainstream media” that Luke Rudowski and so many from We Are Change claim they are fighting against, they made an unverifiable claim, with no research or foundational evidence, and stated it as fact. This was dangerous, irresponsible, and mirrored the tactics of the FBI.

Although Luke has since removed this claim, and has said he was “wrong” about his allegations, the damage has been done. Once a rumor is started on the internet, it’s almost impossible to extinguish. We have received multiple emails and inquiries seeking comments from media sources, and our blog received 20 times its traditional daily traffic. And it doesn’t seem to be subsiding any time soon, as our name is now associated with mass murder.

We Are Change, as an organization, is a group that thrives off simple answers to complex questions. With thinly veiled anti-semitism and traditional conspiracy theory logic, the problems of our society are not due to complex social, economic, and political relationships like capitalism, the nation-state project, white supremacy or patriarchy, but instead are just problems created by bogeymen like enemies, like “the Fed” or “the Bilderbergers” or “the NWO” or “the Jews”. Instead of actually asking tough questions and trying to build real complex analysis of why things are the way they are, it becomes easier to wash themselves of any culpability for being a part of a replicated social relationship, and just blame the “shadowy figures behind the curtain.”

This one dimensional logic was thus applied to the tragedy in Aurora. Instead of an analysis that actually seeks to investigate the complex relationships and conditions that lead to tragic events like mass murder, it’s easier to blame a small group of people. In this case, the Denver Anarchist Black Cross. In this way, Luke and others from We Are Change can wash their hands of any social responsibility. It can’t be a complex social phenomenon… it has to be the work of a secretive organization!

We might have been able to consider this the only reason that Luke and others at We Are Change would choose our organization to target with their allegations: it was an easy option. However, this isn’t the first time that Denver ABC has been targeted for neutralization by We Are Change.

In December, Denver ABC discontinued our role as the legal team for Occupy Denver after repeated incidents of harassment and physical confrontation with members of the local chapter of We Are Change. This culminated in an event where members of We Are Change shouted down a member of Denver ABC who was addressing a crowd, by bellowing that she was a “member of the CIA”.

Luke Rudowski and We Are Change chose this moment, just as all political pundits do, to attack their political enemies and work to neutralize and discredit them: part CoIntelPro tactic of bad jacketing and making baseless accusations without any evidence whatsoever, and part political posturing.

Luke and We Are Change are spitting on the bodies of those who lost their lives with these sloppy tactics, and attempting to use someone else’s tragedy to grow their own political power by rehashing old disagreements with a political foe.

Undoubtedly, We Are Change are not alone in these types of actions. Whether it’s those on the institutional left pushing for gun control, or those on the right pushing for more police powers or a re-strengthening of fundamentalist religious values, hacks on all sides of the political spectrum are scrambling to push their own attempts to secure power at the expense of those who senselessly died in that dark Aurora movie theater.

And in the end, all of these people miss the forest for the trees. We live in an insane and violent culture. One that was founded upon mass genocide and slavery. We live in a culture that celebrates genocidal generals as “war heroes”, where military training happens in schools, where kids are bred from the youngest of ages to want to go conquer and occupy foreign countries. We live in a culture where it is always easier for people to get firearms than it is to get mental health treatment; where the only answer anyone seems to have for how this situation could have been dealt with revolves around the question of firearms. None of us heard a single person that has spoken on any media outlet, including alternative outlets, that spoke about the cultures of violence that surround us, or about access to mental health care, or necessary social services. All talk was centered on firearms: whether to ban them, or make sure the state gets more.

Let’s be clear, this is not a call for gun control. The members of Denver ABC have been quite clear on our stance on gun ownership and the right to defend communities and individuals from violence. However, even as proponents of gun ownership as a means of self defense, we cannot help but question why it is that no one has started a conversation around other aspects of this complex social phenomenon. Why do mass murders affect our communities? Why does this level of violence happen on such a regular cycle? Why would someone who shoots up a movie theater be (rightfully) vilified in a city where a celebratory statue of a man who helped massacre indigenous people by the tens of thousands is perched just yards away from the City and County Building?

Until we start to try to actually examine complex social relationships, and ask hard questions that may also indict ourselves as active contributors to this violent spectacle of a society, questions that may lead us to a critical analysis of our entire culture and way of life, we may never really have any answers on how to prevent these horrible tragedies. In fact, the longer we avoid asking these questions, and building a complex and critical understanding of the insane society we live in, the more often tragedies like this will occur.

As the members of the Denver Anarchist Black Cross continue in our work to build a free, just, and liberatory society our thoughts stand with the victims of this horrible tragedy.

In mourning and in rage,
DABC July 21, 2012.

If someone else had a gun

by nobody Monday, Jul. 23, 2012 at 5:55 PM

If someone in the theater had a gun, it wouldn't have done shit. To suggest otherwise is pure ignorance.

Holmes was wearing body armor, therefore we can assume he had considered the possibility of someone with a gun trying to stop him. An audience member with a gun would have probably been carrying a small pistol. He would have shot him a few times, if he could see past the smoke in the dark, and had a clear shot, and there weren't a bunch of people behind Holmes who might have gotten hit.

The bullets would have contacted him, maybe stunned him or knocked him down - and then Holmes would have seen the shooter, and killed him or the people around him, in a barrage of bullets from his semi (or converted) automatic weapon. (Remember, he at least considered the possibility of someone shooting him - so he may have worked out how to determine where to shoot after being shot.)

Besides, how do you know that there wasn't someone in the audience who was armed? They very well may have been. And that person may not have been prepared to act, because this is a traumatic situation that people don't prepare for. They prepare for things like robberies and home invasions. They wouldn't have prepared for mass murderers in theaters, because it hasn't happened before.

Not almost a phd

by nobody Monday, Jul. 23, 2012 at 6:32 PM

He was a first year PhD student, not "almost" anything. But he did have a BS in neuroscience, which means he's pretty smart. Reports indicate that he's very smart.

My guess is that he's mentally ill, and knows it at some level, and might even be getting treatment... but I suspect not. He is probably studying neuroscience to try to understand and deal with his weird and murderous thoughts.

Because he's so smart, he's probably able to function in society largely on will and logic. As Marquez wrote: we contain multitudes. Also, as older folks will know - you can't just operate on will and logic. You need some "sense".

Articles say he hatched this plan months ago, and that's probably why he's perceived as a "loner" -- logistically, if you're building bombs and a weapons cache, and probably going out shooting sometimes, you're not going to be able to have friends over to your home. They might see things, like a table full of bomb-making supplies, failed bomb experiments, and so forth.

He seems to have had friends in college and high school. He was active in his church as a young person. So, in preparation for his murders, he may have wanted to distance himself from people - and at another level, by doing so, he'd increase his own psychosis. It sounds weird and irrational - but if you ask anyone who's been a drug addict, a cult member, or any other kind of addict, they'll say they've done similar things to distance themselves from people and go deeper into addiction.

What we need to learn from this situation is how to identify when someone is going to commit mass murder. What differentiates this person from other mental illness?

question this

by huh? Monday, Jul. 23, 2012 at 11:19 PM

What?

-With thinly veiled anti-semitism*[1] and traditional conspiracy theory logic*[2], the problems of our society are not due to complex social, economic, and political relationships* [3] like capitalism, the nation-state project, white supremacy or patriarchy, but instead are just*[4] problems created by bogeymen like enemies, like “the Fed”*[5] or “the Bilderbergers”*[6] or “the NWO”*[7] or “the Jews”*[8]. -

[1] Have listened to LR of We Are Change and have not heard any such thing, unless criticism of Israel qualifies as “ anti-semitism”. Can you provide a sample of his antisemitism? That would establish the accusation of [1]
[2] and traditional conspiracy theory logic” seems to be one of those pejoratives used to discredit research into the deep state, shadow government, secret team...etc etc. Unless you're trying to tell us the current political system has no such entities or as you put it, “bogeymen”. I scoff at this analysis. There is huge activity hidden inside the National Security State for unsavory, wicked and cruel gain by these entities. Don't even try to tell the reader differently.
It's insulting.
[3] Is this your particular analysis of his world view or does that accusation have any foundation? Again, a source for this accusation is needed to substantiate this.
[4] “just” what, a repeat of [3]? Maybe you're reading LR's mind.
[5] A private banking cartel of off shore interests in control of our monetary system is not a real threat?
Good lord, read the words of Jefferson.
-If the American People ever allow the banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers occupied. The issuing power of money should be taken from the bankers and restored to Congress and the people to whom it belongs. I sincerely believe the banking institutions having the issuing power of money are more dangerous to liberty than standing armies. -
[6]Oh yeah, the Bilderburger meeting held under intense state security, where very powerful people secretly discuss policies behind closed doors, and who would NEVER EVER CONSPIRE against the people to enrich themselves.
To not believe this universal physical law must be “ traditional conspiracy theory logic”, huh?
[7] The research community didn't invent the phrase “New World Order”, chum. It's been around for awhile.
[8] I guess you're back to [1] so again, provide primary sources, please.

This event has some problems. As does this 'anarchist's' critique.

a few ideas

by Porge Tuesday, Jul. 24, 2012 at 11:07 AM

I believe that this event has critical inconsistencies with the current media narrative.
This guy was armed to the teeth with a few thousand dollars worth of combat hardware. As a student, where did he get the money? Also he seems to have extensive booby trap expertise. Such trails don't show any footprints in this paranoid post Sept 11 HLS obsessed state? Unbelievable.
Why are the fire exit doors on a movie theater not alarmed?
Is this act of terror directed at the average, white, normal "a very shy, well-mannered young man who was heavily involved in the local church activities." profile?

And right before a vote on accepting the UN's Small Arms Treaty as law.

Holmes had a graduate fellowship at CU worth full tuition plus $26,000 /year, more than enough to buy an AR-15, a 12 gauge, a couple of Glock handguns, plus body armor and a cache of ammo.

it''s standard procedure that the exit doors by the screens at movie theatres are not alarmed. ask any teenager who opens one and lets a gaggle of his forends in without paying admission.

the UN small arms treaty has been debunked already by Snopes.com

by Wash Times sez Wednesday, Jul. 25, 2012 at 9:32 PM

We Come In Peace

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/may/27/the-un-gun-grabber/
"American gun owners might not feel besieged, but they should. This week, the Obama administration announced its support for the United Nations Small Arms Treaty. This international agreement poses real risks for freedom both in the United States and around the world by making it more difficult - if not outright illegal - for law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms.

The U.N. claims that guns used in armed conflicts cause 300,000 deaths worldwide every year, an inordinate number of which are the result of internal civil strife within individual nations. The solution proposed by transnationalists to keep rebels from getting guns is to make the global pool of weapons smaller through government action. According to recent deliberations regarding the treaty, signatory countries would be required to “prevent, combat and eradicate” various classes of guns to undermine “the illicit trade in small arms.” Such a plan would necessarily lead to confiscation of personal firearms.

This may seem like a reasonable solution to governments that don’t trust their citizens, but it represents a dangerous disregard for the safety and freedom of everybody. First of all, not all insurgencies are bad. As U.S. history shows, one way to get rid of a despotic regime is to rise up against it. That threat is why authoritarian regimes such as Syria, Cuba, Rwanda, Vietnam, Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone endorse gun control."

Democide is a real consequence of a disarmed people.
