7 Day Occupation against Downtown Gentrification

by imc repost/report Wednesday, May. 30, 2012 at 8:45 PM

LACAN, Occupy the Hood LA, and Occupy LA have announced a 7-day occupation and protest against the Central City Association (CCA) for their plan to criminalize and oppress the homeless and poor.

Bilal Ali wrote:
Tonights the night! LACAN, OCCUPY THE HOOD LA, OCCUPY LA and
supporters will be occupying the Central City Association's
(CCA)Headquarters. Tonight is the start of a week long occupation /
free autonmous zone at various CCA/CCEA H.Q.'s. Tomorrow the CCA will
holding its Economic Development board meeting...we'll be camping
outside.

The CCA's "2020" Downtown Plan see link below includes removing the
poor and homeless residents, through more law enforcement occupying
skid row.

http://ccala.org/downloads/DT2020legislativeprioritiesJan2012.pdf

Highlights from the report:

Advocate for lifting the Jones settlement
-- [This is the decision that allows homeless to sleep on one half or the sidewalk. It's a freedom of speech issue.]

Expand on efforts to end the pathological tolerance of the service-resistant
and/or drug-addicted chronically homeless who choose to self-destruct on our public streets.

Lobby for increased resources for the Safer Cities Initiative, reinforcing the
Broken Windows approach to policing.

Partner with BIDs, LAPD, and City Attorney to identify problem areas and issues, then implement strategic, consistent law enforcement (e.g., aggressive panhandling, proliferation of shopping carts, intelligence-based graffiti removal).

Sounds Dire w/ NO good solutions offered?

by occupyer in LA Sunday, Jun. 03, 2012 at 5:48 AM

Good info extricated from complex docs. thanx. But it appears that tho more FORCE in "en-force-ment" is coming, no improved innovative solutions or even experiments are being offered or attempted.....

we know the staid, dulled, repetitive stuck-in-mud minds of govt politicians with their accompanying lobbyists and business 'associates' [ahem ! ]

so who is surprised ? But dismayed, we are, very ! and concerned.

Need more individual short phone calls to those in charge of these plans at City Hall, LAPD, County, etc. Need a list of these posted HERE and elsewhere for easy access plse.

Need more letters written, by hand and post-office mailed to selected political office-holders. Another list researched and compiled by an activist willing to give 2-3 hrs to exposing and sharing on laindymedia.org for everyone to use, copy, keep for future use also.

Need some partying - not alcoholic but with emails to send en masse and re-sent at indeterminant random intervals,

for virtual actions to be created, temporary ones, that dissipate and reform later elsewhere again

collaborated discussions w/o much conflict to BRAINSTORM how else to influence and not allow the people of any class, economic level, type, health or other
classification to be segregated OUT and sold down that dirty river of the gentrified.

and spot-act, like spot-checking does, by 2 or 3 persons at a time, no biggie but enough to be effective and noticed..,,

sure ideas and directions and instructions are easy to give here, but it is also ENCOURAGEMENT, support and another start, again and again

start some more !
and keep up sharing the info,
never know who will pick up and DO SOMETHING small but do something anyhow....again !

thanx
