Discours de Jean Rostand

by Patrice Faubert Thursday, Apr. 26, 2012 at 11:35 PM

Quand on voit les atrocités, les injustices, les exactions commises au nom de l' idole patrie;

Speech of Jean Rostand

Extract idiosyncrasic of a speech of fire Jean Rostand (1894-1977) which was marked on November 15th, 1968 with Reciprocity in Paris. Extracts were read by it in Europe 1 by fire Georges Brassens (1921-1981), which recommended the reading of it. Feu Jean Rostand was one of largest French scientists the, and in other various things, was also the poet of the clamping plates and frogs, as fire J.H. Fabre (1823-1915) was the poet of the insects, and do not forget that there is 200 million insects per individual, and I thus was likely to correspond with fire Jean Rostand when I was young, to one time when I was interested largely in the erpetology.

Long extract of a speech of fire Jean Rostand

“Dear friends

How can one be Persan? one exclaimed at the century of Montesquieu.

Me, I would say readily today: How can one not be citizen of the world?

When the atrocities are seen, the injustices, exactions made in the name of the idol fatherland;

when one sees to which bloody dead ends all nationalisms lead; when it is seen how, for a little oil, of cobalt, or uranium, the most elementary feelings of humanity are ridiculed; when it is seen how the requirements of crowned selfishness make cheap life and human dignity, if it is a question of ensuring the possession of a raw material or a zone of influence, when one sees the fabulous sums wasted for armaments which will never be useful, or which, so by misfortune they served, would put in danger the whole species, in other words, when one sees the people ruining themselves, or for nothing, or their suicide: when one thinks that with this military expenditure one could create everywhere the abundance announced by Jacques Duboin, to solve all the economic and social problems - because which the world is divided into antagonistic blocks; when one thinks of all that science, medicine, the culture, the democracy could gain with a pacification of the world which would release such an amount of power

and of energy, absorptive up to now by the work of death; how not to dream, at least, of a humanity without borders and able finally to be devoted to tasks either pettily national, but planetary.

The spectacle which the world gives at present is not made to reassure the friends of peace. Never, it appeared more divided and further away from the union. Everywhere nationalisms, chauvinisms, racisms, fanaticisms flame.

Everywhere reign as a Master the spirit of competition, the will of domination, the brutality of supposedly civilized.

To arm the spirit with the child so that its hand does not have to be armed any more: here is a beautiful formula. Yes, to disencumber, purge the school handbooks of all that can nourish disastrous separatisms; to save to the schoolboys the sinister account battles; to take care not to detail the beauties of the Napoleonean strategy to them, to render comprehensible to them that a butcher on a throne is not less one to stop and that the triumphal arches and the Vendôme columns are only relics of a close cruelty: to initiate with the scientific discoveries and progress of justice, more than with the fatal prowesses; to penetrate of this concept that no war is beautiful, that no victory is glorious - since Te Deum

sing themselves on the mass graves, to teach to them as of more the young age which no people are worth more than another, than any race is not higher than another, than no fatherland during time nobly acted more than another; their to show that it is not national history which is not a fabric of ferocities and disloyalties; to banish programs all that can contribute to put in the spirit of the young people a feeling of national primacy, in some field that it is; material, spiritual, moral.

One of my friends, professor of history, quoted me at one time, the word of a schoolboy, who had just received his book of history; “I received my book of war”. And well, we do not want any more that the books of history are books of war.

For me, pacifist being, it are not inevitably to be ready with all to sacrifice to peace, but is nevertheless to be able to sacrifice many things to him and with what one holds.

It is to obstinately see in any war the gigantic miscarriage of justice that made the sum of the capital punishments inflicted with so many innocent; it is not to grant coarse simplifications and falsifications which propaganda diffuse to poke hatreds; it is to refuse to shell the chain of the slogans of order and calumnies of instruction; it is not to protest which one wants peace when one plays the game of fanaticisms which make it impossible; it is to denounce without slackening the atrocity, the ignominy of the war, but to take care not to charge to the one of the belligerents of the atrocities except series; it is to avoid denouncing on a side what is done or would be made also unfavourable side; it is to condemn, in all the camps; until - boutisms and intransigences; it is to afflict itself when, for some cause that it is, one sees a rifle between the hands of a child; it is to be obsessed by the phantoms of all those which died for nothing; it is to prefer that the reconciliations precede the mass graves; it is not to be never sure to be right completely when one subscribes to the death of the others…

A plain world could be built only by men and women having in the middle this pacifism. “
