U.S. Election 2012- Alexander: U.S.-Israel Should End Threats Against Iran

by Lynn Lomibao Wednesday, Feb. 01, 2012 at 4:02 PM

U.S. presidential candidate Stewart Alexander is calling on the Obama administration to seek peace in the Middle East and to allow the international community time to examine Iran’s nuclear program to determine the scope and dimension of the program.

By Lynn Lomibao

As the international Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) began a three day visit to address concerns about Tehran’s nuclear program, U.S. presidential candidate Stewart Alexander called on the Obama administration and Israel to end the tough talk and threats against Iran. Stewart Alexander is the presidential nominee for the Socialist Party USA.

Stewart Alexander noted, “Iran is cooperating with the international community and has shown good faith by permitting the IAEA to discuss provisions of Iran’s nuclear program.” On Sunday, it was still unclear if the IAEA/UN inspectors would inspect the nuclear sites or discuss the possible military dimensions of Iran’s nuclear program.

Tension between the U.S. and Iran has been rising in recent months and until several days ago; the U.S. and Israel had been planning to conduct joint military exercises in the region that has been cancelled. More than a week ago, the United Arab Emirates cautioned the United States and Israel against further escalation in tensions over Iran’s nuclear activity. According to UAE officials, “It is important to get far away from any escalation and we stress the stability of the region.”

Alexander is calling on the Obama administration to seek peace and to allow the international community time to examine Iran’s nuclear program to determine the scope and dimension of the program. “The state of Israel should also refrain from any further threats against Iran and allow the international community time to resolve any concerns over Iran’s nuclear program through peaceful, international efforts. An attack against Iran will have long term and serious consequences that will be dealt with by the international community.”
