Youth Walk To Assist The Millions Who Live On .25 a Day or Less

October 2010 - Youth for Human Rights Florida participated in the annual Partnership Walk at Lake Eola Park in Orlando on October 17th, to demonstrate their support for ending global poverty.

The Walk is an initiative of Aga Khan Foundation U.S.A. (AKF USA) to raise awareness and funds to alleviate global poverty and promote partnership between America and the developing world.

As of 2008, the World Bank has estimated that there are over 1.3 billion impoverished persons in developing countries who live on .25 a day or less. AKF works around the world helping those less fortunate to learn skills that will further their basic survival. This kind of sustainable assistance is grounded on the adage "if you give a man a fish he can eat for a day, but if you teach a man to fish he can eat for his lifetime.”

This is the second year Youth for Human Rights Florida has joined in AKF's efforts to raise awareness of this monumental social concern.

The two organizations are aligned through their common purposes to better the plight of those less fortunate.

Youth for Human Rights Florida is a chapter of Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI), a non-profit, secular organization that works throughout the state educating students and adults on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The document codifies the basic rights inherent to all of mankind, including the right to life, liberty, food and shelter.

The uniqueness of the YHRI’s program lies in the educational materials, which includes a youth-oriented DVD explaining the 30 Human Rights delineated in the International Declaration. The materials were created in collaboration with the Human Rights Department of the Church of Scientology International.
