Saturday, September 18, 10am - March & Rally to Demand Justice for Manuel Jamines!
Stop Police Killings! Justice for Immigrant Workers!

Gather 6th & Union Ave., Los Angeles
March to City Hall (1st and Spring St.)

Join community organizations and individuals for a mass March and Rally on Saturday, Sept. 18 to demand justice for Manuel Jamines. The LAPD murder of Manuel Jamines has sparked outrage in the Guatemalan immigrant community. Hundreds of people have protested the cold-blooded murder every day since it happened. And the LAPD has unleashed violent, unprovoked repression on the community—beating and arresting people, handing over undocumented workers to ICE, and firing rubber bullets into crowds, leaving many bloodied and injured. They are continuing to attack the community on a daily basis.

Mayor Villaraigosa and the LAPD leadership have defended the killing of Jamines. They have promised a “fair investigation,” while at the same time calling the police officer who pulled the trigger “heroic” and “brave.” But the facts speak otherwise. LAPD officer Frank Hernandez, who killed Jamines, has been put on forced leave twice before for shooting people. Witnesses to the Jamines killing have come forth saying he had no knife in his hand when he was shot twice in the head.

Police violence against immigrants and poor people will keep happening unless we get organized and fight back. Come to march from the place where Jamines was killed to City Hall. Justice for Manual Jamines!

We demand: Arrest LAPD officer Frank Hernandez for murder! - An independent investigation into the killing! - Community control over the police! - No more raids, racial profiling or police violence targeting oppressed communities!

Initiated by Unión de Guatemaltecos Emigrantes en EEUU (UGE), Vamos Unidos USA, ANSWER Coalition and the Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition. Endorsed by FUPA, Echo Park Community Coalition, Bantay Filipinos, CISPES, Coalition for Peace and Democracy in Honduras, PSL and others.

Manifestación y Mitin
¡Justicia para Manuel Jamines!
¡Alto a los asesinatos policíacos! ¡Justicia para los trabajadores Inmigrantes!
...

Convocan: Unión de Guatemaltecos Emigrantes en EEUU (UGE), Vamos Unidos USA, the ANSWER Coalition and the Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition. Apoyada por: FUPA, Echo Park Community Coalition, Bantay Filipinos, CISPES, Coalición por la Paz y la Democracia en Honduras el PSL y otros. ANSWER to jump in front of the bandwagon again

by FYI Sunday, Sep. 12, 2010 at 6:25 AM

ANSWER has no right to call this march. It’s up to the community of Westlake to decide how to respond to the killing.

But ANSWER can’t stand the thought of anyone marching in this city without their fucking truck at the head of march.

ANSWER will work with the police to control the march and herd people to a heavily police monitored rally at city hall. The march will be nothing but a police controlled event from start to finish. The police will be controlling the march. The people we are protesting against controlling the march? This is absurd.

Advice to community based activists and organizers:

Don’t go. Or if you do go, work to disrupt ANSWERs and police’s plans. Examples of tactics: hold a separate kick off rally and march in a different direction, or stage a break away march to the Rampart station. Get in front of the ANSWER truck, block it and divert the march back into the community.

Mr.

by R. Vasquez Tuesday, Sep. 14, 2010 at 4:57 AM

The guy with the knife didn't speak English or Spanish Instead he spoke Quiche, a Mayan dialect

Well, there you have it, the police should have ordered him to drop the knife in Quiche!

Or can't the police departments just issue a universal translator to all officers, like they had on Star-Trek. That way if an illegal alien from say the planet Nard-Furr showed up in LA and attempted to stab a woman with a galactic spear, the POPO could yell at him like Captain Kirk did and the Nard-Furrian would understand them immediately. I also think we should disarm the police and issue them big rubber mallets like the characters in Looney-Tunes had.

Or we could pass a law that if you tried to stab a person and then lunged at a police officer with the very same knife, the officer could shoot you.

Having been an officer before and after watching a myriad of You-Tube videos that pretty clearly show our nations finest not being so fine and then lying about it until the video is posted, I don't jump up to defend my brethren like I used to. I also don't like the knew mantra of a lot of officers that this is just like any old job, and the idea is to promote and see how much money one can make before you pull the pin. Yes I know about how the politicians have F---ked-up police work and the little cut-throats that permeate the modern departments and Deep-Throat their way up the ladder of Suckcess.

But I'm telling you, being the Police used to be a real proud job to have and it was the only job I ever had where you could really make a difference in somebody's life, sometimes good and sometimes bad.

I believe that for this lady that this guy tried to stab these three bike officers where her Angels! I'm not going to second guess them like all these protesters because like the protesters, I WAS NOT THERE! Until an investigation or a You-Tube video posts showing these cops fornicating with the witness or the knife wielding, Quiche speaking Mayan warrior being held down with a broom stick hovering in the background, I got to give it to the Cops on this one.

p.s. Unlike Hollywood portrayal, most officers don't like to shoot people because it creates problems even if you're in the right.

I will also tell you if this guy had stabbed the pregnant woman, these same people would be protesting that they were not given protection from the police. It's idiotic when people riot over a Dirt-Bag. Same thing happened with Rodney King. If good old Rodney had run over some neighborhood kid fleeing from the police, there would have been a riot because of that!!!!

What I am saying La Raza, is there are plenty of reasons to protest how the police act, but at least protest over something valid!!!

other options for physical restraint

by no excuse for police shooting Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010 at 2:00 PM

Had wrote an earlier response, though la imc editorial policies chose to censor it because it was ?

Anyway, am going to rewrite the main points of the censored comment;

For the sake of arguement, this comment takes the worst case scenario that Manuel was holding a knife. What actually happened is irrelevent, this examines police responses to ANY worst case scenario, all arguements are hypothetical.

Regardless of who was doing what, there are (or need to be) other realistic options for police besides shooting anyone who only has a knife or other "arm's length" weapon besides a gun.

Physical restraint is always safer for all parties when there is a 4:1 ratio, or think "one officer for each limb".

This would enable the officers to physically disarm (ever heard of police learning karate for self defense as part of academy training?) the individual with the knife and then hold him down, thus preventing harm to the officers, bystanders and the person being restrained.

Lethal force is NOT the only option for officers, it is the option chosen because officers are either too lazy or have too much machismo to call for back-up. Most likely (any police whistleblower testimony appreciated) an internal LA police department policy that (due to budget shortfalls) mocks or humiliates individual officers who call for back-up.

However, IF the LA police would have followed the 4:1 ratio and attempted a physical take down instead of shooting, Manuel would remain alive instead of being shot for no good reason.

People who protest police shootings and try to use these tragedies to promote communism/socialism (specifically speaking to Bob Avakian's RCP crew here) are exploiting the deaths of the victims.

Police brutality also existed under socialist governments, ask anyone from Eastern Europe under Soviet rule, and the existance of socialism will NOT protect people against police brutality.

Since we are in a modern industrial system, it appears some form of policing is needed, though the citizens and visitors to the region will need to drastically reform to role of police to protect the community without becoming the organized gang of blue uniformed thugs that they have morphed into.

What is needed to achieve this goal is actually MORE police on the street with LESS guns on their hips.

That last line may not be what people on this site want to hear, though unless the anarchists and socialists want to try protecting the weaker and more vulnerable members of their communities from violent acts, our industrial system (until it collapses) will remain dependent on trained police for protection.

That being said, HOW the police act has great room for variation, we should have police trained as martial arts experts more ready and able to kick the knife out of someone's hand rather than shoot someone who is only holding a knife.

We always hear this

by wait a sec. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010 at 4:52 PM

this is avoidance
"exploiting the deaths of the victims. "
what we are doing is trying to find justice for the irresponsible actions of our public servants.
They seem to have acquired a penchant for overwhelming force and the command chain seems to sanction it.

The command chain needs to be examined and public review for promotions and punishments need to be instituted.
unless we acknowledge the fact that they serve as a tool of terrorism instead of peace keeping.
