Governor out to rebrand Arizona over immigration law criticism

Gov. Jan Brewer has created a new task force to rebrand Arizona's image in the wake of continuing calls for boycotts over the state's tough new immigration law.

The task force, which will include representatives from the Arizona Department of Tourism, the state Department of Commerce, and Brewer's own administration, is charged with coming up with a new plan to retool the state's image as prime destination for convention and tourism business.

Its proposal is due within a month.

"It's up to us to get the truth out there," Brewer said of the task force's rebranding mission. "Because this is impacting Arizona's face to the nation, based on facts that are not true."As an example, Brewer said it has been erroneously reported that the new immigration law would allow racial profiling and that visitors can't come to Arizona without ID, or they'll be arrested.

"You aren't going to be asked for ID, unless you commit a crime," she said.

The governor said Wednesday that the tourism industry representatives she had invited to her offices were "understanding" of her decision to sign Senate Bill 1070, and they have not asked her to back down from her decision.

Brewer said an untold amount of money would be transferred from the Department of Commerce to the Arizona Office of Tourism to support the rebranding effort.

Brewer was unable to put a dollar amount on total business that might have been lost as a result of the uproar over the new immigration law, but suggested that the greater problem is likely to be new business that simply chooses to bypass Arizona in favor of other states.

Members of the tourism task force, who began meeting at 3 p.m., were still behind closed doors in the Governor's Office at 4:30 p.m. and could not immediately be reached for comment. In total, there are about 15 or 20 individuals from such groups as the tourism office, the Greater Phoenix Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Southern Arizona Lodging and Resort Association discussing the issue.

Will Los Angeles boycott of Arizona matter?

Pardon me if I am not overly impressed with Los Angeles’ boycott of Arizona.

That city on Wednesday became the latest in a growing list of cities, school districts and organizations giving Arizona the cold shoulder for passing Senate Bill 1070. “An immigrant city, an international city, (Los Angeles) needs to have its voice heard,” Councilman Ed Reyes said. “It is crucial this great city take a stand.”

Then that great city took a stand – by cutting about 12 percent of the city’s business dealings with Arizona.

Under the resolution approved Wednesday, city officials can still travel to Arizona under “special circumstances” (read: when it’s in their interest), and existing contracts with Arizona firms will be exempt from the ban if canceling them would lead to “significant additional cost” to the city.

In fact, of the city’s $58 million in investments and contracts in Arizona, the council is only severing about $7.7 million worth. Among the stuff it’s keeping: the electricity and the nuclear power it gets from the Grand Canyon state.

Apparently, taking a stand ends when the sun goes down and it’s time to turn on the lights.

No word as yet on whether the LA Lakers will decide to join their namesake city and forfeit a certain upcoming series of basketball games. Bets on that one?

I'd be far more impressed with LA's "stand" if the city was willing to endure a little pain in taking it. Clearly, it is not.

I’m opposed to Senate Bill 1070. I think it’s over the top and besides that, it does nothing to solve our biggest problem, which is a border that leaks like a sieve. But I don’t think a boycott is the way to go about changing this particular law. For one thing, most people in this state support it. [No Laurie most people in Arizona don't support the racist law! The polls say 51 percent of the racist people in Arizona support the racist law, but that is not MOST people]

For another, most people in this country support it.

Were I LA (and San Francisco and San Diego), I might beware of a backlash.

any police questions period! Much less show cops
a stinking government issued photo id. (With the
exception of the Supreme Court case Hiibbel v Nevada,

Of course cops all across the land have pretty much

The Los Angeles City Council, protesting Arizona's tough crackdown on illegal immigration, voted Wednesday to ban most city travel to Arizona and future contracts with companies in that state.

Boycott Council members argued that a new Arizona law, which will make it a state crime to lack immigration papers and requires police to determine whether people they stop are in the country illegally, would lead to racial profiling and discrimination. The law takes effect July 23. ...

The council also called on the city attorney's office to review all of the city's $58 million in existing contracts with Arizona companies to determine which can be canceled.

The resolution, which now heads to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, would still allow city officials to travel to Arizona under "special circumstances" that are in the city's interests. Also, existing contracts with Arizona firms would be exempt from the ban if canceling them would lead to "significant additional cost" to the city.

I can think of one contract the city won't be able cancel, let alone modify because of the boycott: service by Arizona-based airlines US Airways and Mesa Air at LAX. Federal regulations prohibit public airports from unjustly discriminating against different carriers; telling US Airways it can no longer serve LAX because of an ideological disagreement between Los Angeles and Arizona probably wouldn't fly with the feds. Then there's the issue of whether the boycott is even constitutional at all.

The US immigration system has been broken by 13million illegals. It is time to mobilize all available forces in the state. Arizona is working a solution within Posse Comitatus, while avoiding mobilizing the State Militia, and declaring Martial Law. States must read Article 4 Section 4 and 32CFR215.4(a). Simply put use the civilian police, but extend their power to the federal limit. Arizona has delegated limited power to local police, within Article 4 Section 4 and 32CFR215.4(a).

Protests against Arizona's new immigration law
continued Saturday morning, more than three weeks after the controversial bill was signed.

Around 10 a.m., about 60 protesters from Dallas spilled from two Pullman buses outside the Wells Fargo Tower in downtown Phoenix. Waving American flags, they marched along Washington Street for nearly an hour, chanting and holding signs that read "Repeal SB1070."

"We find that what Arizona has done has been the most un-Christian, un-American, unconstitutional law that's passed since Jim Crow in the 1960s," said Domingo Garcia, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens.

The Dallas-based Latino civil-rights organization organized the two-day bus journey, dubbed "Freedom Riders."

Local organizer Rev. John Mireles said the Freedom Riders is a "contemporary effort to revive the civil-rights movement and target the racist legislation that's happening in Arizona."

The youngest protester was 8 years old, the oldest, 72.

Shaun Chapa, 30, of Denton, Texas, said he joined the group because his fraternity, Lambda Theta Phi, had spoken out against the bill.

"Racal profiling, that's the basic thing we're coming out against," said Chapa, a graduate student at the University of North Texas. "Arizona's a part of the country and we're all united."

No supporters of the bill were present at the morning protest.

The buses departed Dallas on Thursday and made stops in El Paso, Las Cruces, N.M., and Nogales before arriving in Phoenix.

Garcia said it was important to travel to Arizona because the state has become the epicenter for the national immigration debate.

"Arizona's become the new Mississippi," Garcia said. "We want President Obama and the Senate
and Congress - and hopefully a few courageous Republicans - to join in passing a bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform bill."

The group plans to continue protesting this afternoon at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort, where former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is expected to appear with Gov. Jan Brewer at a 4:45 p.m. campaign event.
