Though i also consider myself a conspiracy theorist, this is where i draw the line. The CIA does plenty of other operations in the shadows, though i don't believe that the CIA had a direct hand in the H1N1 outbreak..

The H1N1 outbreak was traced to a poultry factory farm in Mexico, and most other animal based disease outbreaks (bird flu, SARS, etc...) can be directly linked with the process of factory farming confinement..

Put simply, animals crowded together in factory farms (or CAFOS = Confined Animal Feeding Operations) are more likely to spread disease amongst themselves at a faster rate, thus requiring antibiotics and antivirals being given to the caged animals on a regular basis. Within a short time the bacteria and viruses quickly alter their structures to resist the antibiotic/antiviral, and eventually these resistant strains make their way out of the CAFO and into the public realm..

In other words, they feared that an avian flu virus would get into a swine CAFO, mutate into something much more virulent, and then get passed to humans.

Yes, this swine/bird/spanish flu was not the product of normal epidemiology.

Of course, the "lab" in question is the factory farm feedlot, or CAFO! By creating the conditions of overcrowding, diseases can spread and mutate much faster than they ever would under more natural free range conditions. This in effect makes the CAFO an uncontrolled "open air" lab where viruses and bacteria can mutate quickly into more resistant strains.

In the case of the Smithfield pork (not poultry as i stated in error in above comment) facility in Perote, swarms of flies were the likely vector from pigs to people;

The Plum Island lab had been run by the Agricultural Department to study insects and microbes that could threaten crops and animal herds in the United States. The lab was created as a military research unit long ago. It probably was involved in biological and chemical warfare research. Equipped with air locks and containment chambers, it is supposed to be able to safely handle dangerous pathogens.

Some observers have noted that Plum Island is just across the bay from the area where the encephalitis outbreak began in New York.

At first the virus was thought to be of a "St. Louis" strain that is rare in the Northeast but somewhat more common in Florida and other states in the South and Southwest. Now the virus has been re-identified as an Upper Nile strain--the names are based on where a virus is first identified--which had not been seen before in North America.

Such a rare occurrence near a facility that studies rare pathogens might be just a coincidence. Plum Island officials have made no comment about the outbreak.

Nonetheless, Plum Island will now be outfitted to handle even more dangerous pathogens--those known to be able to infect humans as well as plants and animals. For example, the known U.S. stocks of the smallpox virus are kept at a Level 4 facility.

The supposed purpose is to study defenses against bio- terrorist attacks on U.S. agriculture. No such attacks have ever been reported. Nor has any group or country ever threatened such an attack on the United States.

So why is defense needed?

Recall that the biggest, most aggressive military machine in the world, headquartered in the Pentagon, is officially called the Department of Defense.

Is it possible that under the guise of defense, Plum Island will be studying pathogens to be used against crops and animals in other countries? The pigs in Smithfield's Perote facility could be so heavily dosed on antivirals that the new H1N1 strain did not effect them, though some sick pigs who were the initial carriers could have been sent to slaughter long before the human outbreaks were known about. Lack of positive evidence does not imply proof of absence!!

Mutations of viruses are natural and do not require genetic modification from human labs. Similar transmission vectors do not imply the same initial cause. Who are the "two reknowned reporters you speak of? Where are the sources you cite?

No, i will not piss off!!

No, viruses can mutate and switch from bird to pig to human and back again, completing this cycle several times until a severe strain produces an actual noticeable outbreak. Nothing needs to be revived from permafrost, viruses can reinvent themselves a thousand times over, so repitition is the norm when it comes to outbreaks.

Always looking for the hidden hand of the CIA in every outbreak shows lack of understanding of natural systems, viruses are more powerful than you may realize, and capable of all sorts of acrobatics between species.

NEVER did i advise people to take ANY vaccines, my advice is for people to strengthen their immune systems naturally, by eating garlic, cayenne pepper and other known immuno-enhancing foods. In conclusion, the CAFOs that are the most probable culprit in spreading viruses between animals in crowded conditions, and corporations like Smithfield have alot to lose if anyone ever was able to prove them liable for such outbreaks.

The H1N1 swine influenza virus is a subtype of Influenza-A virus. Influenza-A viruses infect several species of mammals, including humans, pigs, and birds. Pigs in particular are capable of contracting Influenza-A viruses that are normally associated only with birds, only with humans, and only with swine. When Influenza-A viruses commingle within a herd of pigs, they can share genetic information and mutate into a new strain that can be passed from human to human.

This appears to be what has happened with the latest H1N1 outbreak. It contains genetic material from bird, swine, and human influenza viruses and is capable of passing from human to human.

One of the ways Influenza-A viruses can spread is through manure. Given that H1N1 is an Influenza-A subtype it is entirely possible, if not likely, that flies could carry virus-containing manure particles from Granjas-Carroll CAFO lagoons to people. These need not be injected by the flies directly into humans, such as with West Nile Virus; it is enough that a fly might deposit manure particles containing the virus on a person’s face, hands, or uncooked food.

Please note that this is not merely speculation. Again, quoting the Biosurveillance outbreak timeline:

Just in case that didn’t quite sink in: official investigations thus far into the origin of the swine flu outbreak point to Granjas-Carroll CAFO operations as the source of the virus, and that flies carried it from infected manure to humans. This is most certainly newsworthy information. That little tidbit contains more credibility than half the crap that passes as “news” on cable. What is still required is independent confirmation that this is or is not the case."

After a community college class in microbiology, i can say that i have some limited background in understanding viruses, bacteria and other pathogens. Maybe i'll need to document what i am saying with some references to help explain the details.

Wasn't calling anyone paranoid as an insult, was saying "your paranoia may be getting the best of you." There is nothing wrong with some healthy paranoia, though it could be better focused. Disorganized and scattered paranoia is a hinderance, while controlled and organized paranoia is an assett.

Nor did i say that the pigs weren't sick because they were "on meds". The antibiotics and antivirals are given to CAFO animals (we could include cows and poultry for the "bigger picture") so that they don't develop any symptoms of disease, though viruses and bacteria in fecal matter will remain in the CAFO until a vector like a fly transports the virus outside of the CAFO where it can interact with humans.

Here's one point i missed on the exceptional (though not impossible in nature) traits of H1N1 in crossing the species barrier;

That the last time swine flu jumped to humans is 1918 is not by itself any "proof" of military or CIA involvement. Humans have been living alongside swine flu since then, and the CAFO environment may have helped the virus evolve at a faster rate.

"On April 17, 2009, officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed two cases of swine influenza in children living in neighboring counties in California.1 Here we take a perspective from systems biology to review the series of evolutionary and epidemiologic events, starting in 1918, that led to the emergence of the current swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) strain (S-OIV), which is widely known as swine flu.

Simultaneous Appearance in Humans and Swine (1918)

Before 1918, influenza in humans was well known, but the disease had never been described in pigs.3 For pig farmers in Iowa, everything changed after the Cedar Rapids Swine Show, which was held from September 30 to October 5 of that year.4 Just as the 1918 pandemic spread the human influenza A (H1N1) virus worldwide and killed 40 million to 50 million people, herds of swine were hit with a respiratory illness that closely resembled the clinical syndrome affecting humans. Similarities in the clinical presentations and pathologic features of influenza in humans and swine suggested that pandemic human influenza in 1918 was actually adapted to the pig, and the search for the causative agent began.5,6

The breakthrough came in 1931 when Robert Shope, a veterinarian, transmitted the infectious agent of swine influenza from sick pigs, by filtering their virus-containing secretions, to healthy animals.7 Infectivity of the filtrate was subsequently confirmed by Smith, Andrewes, and Laidlaw,8 who used the ferret model of influenza infection to document transmissibility for both human and swine viruses.

Shope furthered the notion that the human pandemic strain of influenza A (H1N1) and the infectious agent of swine influenza were closely related by showing that human adult serum could neutralize the swine flu virus.4 In a mouse model, samples from patients ranging from newborn infants to 76-year-olds were tested for their ability to neutralize a swine influenza virus strain. This work showed that nearly all serum samples from subjects who were at least 12 years of age were able to protect mice from challenge with a virus isolated from pigs in 1930, whereas those from children older than 1 month but under the age of 12 years had no neutralizing antibody.4 These experiments suggested that the swine influenza virus, or an antigenically similar one, had been in circulation in the human population and had originated from the 1918 pandemic strain. Advanced virologic and molecular studies of viral relatedness support Shope's early hypotheses.9,10

Viral adaptation to a new host species is a complex process, involving adaptation to new cell-surface receptors,11 changes in cell tropisms, innate immunity, and mechanisms of transmission.12 Influenza A (H1N1) virus overcame these barriers in 1918 to emerge from an avian source simultaneously in swine and humans.

Antigenic Divergence of Human and Swine Influenza (1918–1930)

Shope also discovered that antibody specificity against the 1918 human influenza virus rapidly diverged from that of swine influenza virus. Very young infants, still protected by maternal antibody, and persons over the age of 20 years all had neutralizing antibody against swine influenza but not always against human influenza.4 Because the presence of antibody against swine influenza followed a much different age distribution from that against human influenza at the time,4 it was thought that immunity was probably due to exposure to swine influenza in 1918 rather than heterologous antibody cross-reactivity. The absence of antibodies against influenza A (H1N1) swine virus in children born in 1919 or later is evidence that the virus rapidly mutated to a new antigenic variant. Since then, genetic differences in hemagglutinin (HA) show an early divergence between the human and swine viruses.13

Analysis of full genome sequences of representative influenza A (H1N1) viruses from 17 countries and five continents that were sampled between 1918 and 2006 shows that all eight segments of the virus have had generally congruent patterns of evolution over time.14 Thus, human influenza A (H1N1) virus has not acquired new gene segments from avian or other sources. The descent patterns for the genomes have been generally linear, with each new yearly strain successively showing an accumulation of mutations over time. However, there has also been clear phylogenetic evidence of several distinct intrasubtype reassortant events among viruses from various sublineages, so that the overall evolutionary pattern is not truly linear but tightly networked.14

Sporadic Cross-Species Transfers (1958–Present)

Serologic evidence of swine flu infection in humans was documented in 1958,20 and the first isolation of swine influenza virus from a human occurred in 1974 from a patient with Hodgkin's disease who lived on a pig farm.21 Infection of humans with swine influenza virus is often unrecognized because of its clinical similarity to human disease. A seroprevalence study showed markedly increased odds of elevated antibody against swine influenza A (H1N1) virus in swine workers, as compared with nonexposed control subjects.22 During the study, one subject was identified with active swine influenza infection. A self-collected nasopharyngeal culture grew a triple reassortant H1N1 isolate (A/Iowa/CEID23/2005)22 of the genotype known to have circulated in swine in the United States since the late 1990s.23 Transmission of swine influenza to humans continues sporadically and is related to occupational and environmental exposures, including family members of people in high-risk groups.24,25,26

In January 1976, an outbreak of respiratory disease occurred among soldiers returning to an Army base in Fort Dix, New Jersey. A novel virus H1N1 A/New Jersey/76 was identified as the cause of the epidemic that resulted in serologic evidence of 230 cases and one death.27 Because of careful characterization of the soldiers and the nature of basic training, the outbreak at Fort Dix provided an ideal setting for investigation and modeling of the epidemic events.28 The basic reproductive number (R0) is the number of infections caused by an infected person who is introduced into a completely susceptible population. The estimated R0 for the Fort Dix swine influenza virus was 1.2, substantially lower than that calculated for human pandemic and seasonal viruses, for which values range from 1.8 to 2.0.28 Once the virus saturated the tight social-contact structure of the military training base, its transmission potential was insufficient to ignite a larger epidemic in the civilian population at large. The emergence of swine influenza at Fort Dix led to the implementation of a mass vaccination program, which resulted in 40 million civilian vaccinations and 532 cases of the Guillain–Barré syndrome (a rare side effect of influenza vaccination), including 32 deaths.29 "

Many people who work with animals in CAFOs have documented the increasingly resistant strains of viruses. The CAFO animals are heavily medicated with antivirals and this helps them survive the majority of the viruses they are exposed to, though some occasionally override the antivirals and kill the infected animals. Once a virus has mutated to infect humans, anytime it escapes the CAFO on the feet of flies is when we notice the pandemic.

Problems with antivirals in CAFOs;

"The National Pork Producers Council didn't like swine flu being called swine flu. Bad for business. So we now call it 2009 H1N1 or some such thing. It's totally swine-origin, but hey, if Lord Agribusiness doesn't like it, that's that. Same thing with antibiotic resistant bacteria, like methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus ("MRSA"; best source on the net Maryn McKenna's blog). The Pork Council doesn't want anyone to die of MRSA. They just don't want it associated with their product, even though a Dutch strain associated with pigs is now spreading in the US (and infecting people).

Some of MRSA is swine-origin. But not all of it. The National Pork Producers Council has plenty of company. Or companies. And they are pretty upset by the Obama Administration's announced desire to ban use of antibiotics in healthy animals for purely economic reasons:

In testimony today [July 13], new FDA Commissioner Dr. Joshua Sharfstein announced the administration's opposition to the use of growth promoters: sub-therapeutic doses of antibiotics used not as disease treatment, but to encourage animals to put weight on rapidly. Further, he also came out against the administration of antibiotics in food animals without the involvement of a veterinarian — a common situation out here in farm country, where veterinary antibiotics are freely available over the counter. (We discussed Scott Weese's proposal to end that practice here.)

Both of these practices have been repeatedly linked to antibiotic resistance, and for the administration to come out against them is highly significant — [not] just for the struggle against resistant bacteria, but also for the movement to reduce industrial-scale agriculture, which relies on antibiotics to keep food animals healthy while they are in the close confinement of CAFOs [Concenrated Animal Feeding Operations]. In the same hearing, the Union of Concerned Scientists Dr. Margaret Mellon presented data indicating most of the antibiotics used in the US is used for poultry, swine and beef cattle to promote growth and routine disease prevention (13 million pounds annually or 70% of the total). In other words, millions of pounds of penicillins, tetracyclines, and erythromycin class drugs, all used to treat human disease, are being routinely added to animal feed of healthy animals so the National Pork Producers Council and their agribusiness littermates can make a buck. Lord have MRSA!"

But that's not the problem here, it's also not Plumb island unless this is where this chimera of different viruses was created, it's what I call a cover story.
