Deshelve Israeli products this week!

by Kate Tuesday, Sep. 08, 2009 at 5:49 AM

JOIN US AND TAKE ACTION!! The main places locally to buy Israeli products are the Arab markets. They should know better! We are here to support you to ask these stores not to carry Israeli products. If they will not deshelve Israeli products, and voluntarily cleanse their shelves of products that support occupation and apartheid, we are here to provide resources for you to create disencentives for stores to stock Israeli products

OBJECTIVES OF THE CAMPAIGN
The goals of the deshelving campaign are:

1) 1. To oppose Israeli occupation, apartheid, violence, and land theft and to support equality and justice for all, including the Palestinian people.

2) To demonstrate that there is public support for boycotting Israeli
products and products that profit from apartheid;

3) To convince businesses that it is in their economic interest to stop
carrying Israeli products, by creating a cost to their business, whether by putting public pressure,
damaging products or disrupting business; and

4) To empower those who want to take personal and political action in support of equity and
justice, in the tradition of the international campaign to end apartheid in
South Africa.

NOTE: We suggest care in the tone of our actions so as not to counter productively antagonize or alienate potential supporters, whether customers or store
personnel.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WAYS TO PARTICIPATE

There are many ways to participate in deshelving Israeli products. Each
group and individual should decide for yourselves what makes sense for you.

Possible actions include (& can be used in combination):

1. Leafleting outside stores (a downloadable leaflet will be posted here
very soon), with lists of the Israeli products carried by the establishment
you're targeting
2. Giving consumers a coupon to present to the cashier when they check
out, asking the store to stop carrying Israeli products
3. Putting "Don't Buy Into Apartheid" stickers on the products and
leaving them on the shelves (see exemplary photos)
4. Removing products from shelves and piling them in the front of the
store
5. Removing products from shelves and leaving them in hard-to-find places
in the store
6. Removing products from the store and dumping them in the street
7. Damaging products in some way (e.g., pouring fake blood or ketchup on
them) so they cannot be reshelved
8. Singing, guerrilla theater or speechifying inside or outside of the
store (see exemplary video)
9. Protesting/picketing/bannering outside the store
Most actions will have multiple components and options for people who don't
want to risk arrest, along with more confrontational options.

Leafleting is an important component of any action, because we are trying to educate the public about Israeli apartheid and human rights violations and the BDS campaign. We are working on a sample leaflet which will be downloadable here very soon.

Send us your plans!! Let us know if we can help!!

Good idea

The best source of Israeli productys are very often the Arab markets- this is a good idea.

doomed to fail

by not shit sherlock Wednesday, Sep. 09, 2009 at 4:19 AM

Talk about doomed to fail. You're trying to be more Arab than the Arab market owners who *choose* to stock Israeli products? And you're doing it by targeting Arab stores?

Grow up, kiddies. Find some other more productive way to manifest your post-adolescent angst.

"The best source of Israeli products are very often the Arab markets"

And what does that very telling fact reveal to you about how misguided your efforts are?

unwise strategy

by reader Wednesday, Sep. 09, 2009 at 5:53 PM

I'm all for ending Israeli apartheid, completely in favor of divestment, and I even support the right of the Palestinian people to use arms in self-defense.

But this strategy is not wise. We will not make allies by alienating small business-people.

This militant action has the wrong target and will create the wrong impression on those middle-of-the-road folks who aren't into politics and don't care too much about what goes on outside their borders.

I am not a big fan of doing actions to impress these "average" folk. But they are the ones who must be swayed, and the way the media spin things, anti-Zionism will be painted as anti-Semitism, especially since Arabs like the small shopowners listed are Semitic people.

This is an effective strategy- get a spine

by Yaman Sunday, Sep. 13, 2009 at 4:55 AM

" We will not make allies by alienating small business-people."

We don't give a rats ass about the petty bougeois aspirations of these mercahnts who are dealing in death. The arab merchants should know better and they should set an example for others.
the action continues.
