KALAYAAN (FREEDOM) PHILIPPINES SERIES
3 Events This Week: Thursday-Saturday, June 11-13
Public Forum, Film Screening & Benefit Concert

Presented by AJLPP, GABNet-LA, JFAV and ANSWER Coalition

Filipino revolutionaries declared their independence from colonial Spain on June 12, 1898, 119 years ago. Two months later, the United States occupied Manila and declared war on the Philippines, crushing the young republic.

Today, Filipinos are still in struggle for true independence and sovereignty. With continued U.S. occupation and intervention, and a culture of impunity of human rights violations forced on the people of the Philippines, the Alliance for Just and Lasting Peace in the Philippines (AJLPP), the GABRIELA Network (GABNet), Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) and the ANSWER Coalition commemorate Philippine Independence with fierce struggle in the United States. Join us at the following exciting events this week:

(1) THURSDAY: Forum on the Struggle in the Philippines
June 11, 7:30pm
ANSWER Office: 137 Virgil St. Los Angeles 90004
Map and Directions Public Transportation
(5 min walk from Vermont & Beverly Metro Red Line stop)

Join us at an informative public forum on the history and ongoing struggle for justice and liberation in the Philippines. Topics include an anti-imperialist historical background on the situation in the Philippines, the struggles of women and youth, and current struggles against the proposed charter change and for human rights.

Speakers include Jerry Esguerra, ANSWER Coalition; Ernest Tamayo, KMB Pro-People Youth; Amanda Martin, GABNet-LA; and Arturo Garcia, AJLPP. Hosted by AJLPP, GABNet and ANSWER.

(2) FRIDAY: Film Screening 'Ora Pro Nobis'
June 12, 4pm to 7pm
Tribal Cafe: 1651 W. Temple St., LA 90026
Map and Directions Public Transportation

"Ora Pro Nobis" is a politically-charged film about the dark days of the Marcos dictatorship in the Philippines. Acclaimed filmmaker Lino Brocka shows the struggle to bring human rights violators to justice, exposing the complicity between the Philippine army and right-wing paramilitaries.

(3) SATURDAY: Kalayaan (Freedom) Concert & Benefit
June 13, 6pm to 12midnight
Remy’s On Temple: 2126 W. Temple St., LA 90026
