March to Stop the Hate
Downtown Phoenix Arizona was the place to be on Saturday, February 28, 2009 to fight against white supremacy. Thousands attend the "March to Stop the Hate" to bring attention to the racist illegal-immigration tactics being implemented by Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
An estimated figure of 3000-5000 people has been estimated by various media. The people of Phoenix and other people of good conscience are outraged that Sheriff Joe Arpaio can racially profile all who his officers “Think” may be here illegally.
As if that were not enough, the image of Mexican/Central American men, walking in shackles, black and white striped uniform with pink thermos and socks, have completely demonstrated Arpaio’s racism against Mexican/Central American people.
Joe Arpaio must go.
The march was organized by NDLON (The National Day Laborers Organizing Network), El Puente Arizona and Zach de la Rocha, the lead singer of Rage Against the Machine. Other organizations included The Mexica Movement, and University of Arizona, MeCha.
The march was heavily promoted on face book, myspace, and the you tube video done by Humanleague002.
The march started in Indian Steele Road park shortly before 11am and continued straight to the downtown federal building. The crowd was very diverse and prepared with great creative posters. The original plan was to have everyone walk in pairs on the sidewalk until the final destination was reached, however with the great number of people that arrived the police had no other choice than to allow the march to continue spread across the whole street.
As the march smoothly made its way through the streets, you can hear the chants of the Mexica Movement in unison , saying, “hey Joe! Remember 1492.” “Joe! Understand! This is our land.”
The events received a lot of media and was very well documented by grass-roots organizations.
Keep your eyes open for more events and actions.

"The Associated Press February 28, 2009 - 8:21PM
PHOENIX — A few thousand people marched Saturday in downtown Phoenix to protest Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's illegal-immigration policies. Authorities say the "March to Stop the Hate" was peaceful with no major incidents reported.
Crowd estimates from organizers and law enforcement were not immediately available, but at least one estimate put it at about 3,000.
Along the march route, up to 200 Arpaio supporters gathered at the Wells Fargo Tower, where Arpaio has his headquarters.
Many carried signs in support of the embattled sheriff.
The event was led by the National Day Laborers Organizing Network and El Puente Arizona.
The marchers headed south on Central Avenue past the Immigration and Customs Enforcement building and the route ended at the federal building on Washington Street.
Two weeks ago, four members of Congress asked the U.S. Department of Justice to conduct a civil rights investigation of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, saying Arpaio has shown a disregard for Hispanics during his crime and immigration sweeps of heavily Latino areas in metropolitan Phoenix.
But Arpaio said his deputies didn't racially profile anyone in his series of sweeps and vowed to change nothing in response to the investigation request."

there may be other sides who have something to say about the issue to...anyone want to know the WHLLE STORY ?
or is it easier to stay only on "1 side" as in black OR white limited thinking...where only the undocumented thus illegal stealth border-crossing-in-hiding people from any other nation state that is poorer gets to demand their "rights" as if everyone gets a piece of any pie, even one they and their ancestors have not done anything to earn what is HERE.
The native populations often identify with any others of similar ethnic appearance and native in any southern of USA border boundaries natives. But because of being look-similars, these groups on the whole [ not the few that do say they represent most or all Native American Indians, they dont] are just as angry for other reasons...than those who have recently arrived from other indian tribal lands.
And "indian" is a debatble description so even that close tie is dubitable.
So they dont like the recent law authority's actions? ok. Good to show their difference of OPINIONS and their views out in the open...but to feel free to use "hate speech" and feel it is "righteous" to slander those they dislike, is not OK
Imagine if 'the other side' said the same phrases and had signs against those who freely 'protest' and display their anger and desires ? what outcry about discriminatioin would there be?
yep....if one side can do it, why not the other side ? Or is the one currently in power, temporarily, disabled and not allowed to speak as openly against those who speak so meanly about them ?
fairness? where is it ?
