BOYLE HIEGHTS, EAST LA, March 20, 2008 – Students from Roosevelt High marched from their school to a nearby military recruitment center today to demonstrate against the continuing war in Iraq and the predatory practices of military recruiters on their campus. The students staged a picket in front of the recruitment center. The protest was peaceful and there were no arrests.
At issue are the methods that the recruiters are using to entrap youth into the military. Some of these tactics include constant phone calls to the student’s homes and the use of war video games to entice youth into the false idea of combat as something fun and exciting.
Uploaded is an interview Jorge Lopez, a social studies teacher at Roosevelt High School, who is working to resist military recruiters on his campus by educating his students about the realities of war.
