Prevent Future Floods in NOLA, close MR-GO!

by DO NOT trust US Gov with your safety! Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007 at 5:34 AM

Would like to reopen an investigation of possible deliberate levee breach during Katrina storm surge that was a preplanned action by unknown agents to prevent flooding of wealthier neighborhoods..

In other words, authorities knew during Katrina that the levee under pressure was going to burst somewhere at some time durin the storm surge, and to save the wealthier neighborhoods, the lower income 9th ward was sacrificed for flooding by a controlled levee breach..

So how would anyone go about investigating this? The lack of evidence leaves theory open to discussion, though obtaining actual proof may be difficult. It follows a pattern of ineffective disaster response and definite evidence of ignoring prior warnings from scientists for years before Katrina..

The process of FEMA relocation of NOLA residents and urban redevelopment is economic treachery to benefit the wealthy. However, there is never any guarantee of safety for anyone if certain outside ecological factors are not changed..

Both parties (D/R) in NOLA and US Gov. were made aware for years prior to Katrina that several factors were leading to an upcoming hurricane flooding disaster in New Orleans in the near future..

Increased storm surge from global warming.

Reduced buffering protection from storm surge following wetlands erosion (decades of salt water intrusion from petroleum transport canals destroyed wetlands).

Continued subsiding of New Orleans below sea level (lack of sediment transport from Mississippi river overflow).

The funnel effect of MR-GO canal, leads storm surge waters into New Orleans. Levees cannot hold against this pressure, break will be at weakest point or a planned breach of levees..

Suburban sprawl around New Orleans fills in additional wetlands that would have protected older city neighborhoods from storm surge..

If these problems are not fixed outside of New Orleans, it would be difficult to ensure safety for anyone living in the city..

This isn't what anyone wants to hear, though it follows that building cities in low lying river deltas may be great for the shipping economy, though not the most practical for long term housing during seasonal hurricanes..

The culture of New Orleans is great, the food, music, etc.. also, yet the location isn't going to get any higher above sea level, and even the tallest levees won't hold if there are no wetlands protecting your home..

My advice would be to close down the MR-GO canal and all other oil transport canals and begin wetlands restoration, then maybe you've got a chance for safe housing in the next few years of hurricanes..

"The controversial Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet, blamed by scientists and civic groups for helping funnel Hurricane Katrina's storm surge into St. Bernard, the 9th Ward and eastern New Orleans, should be closed with an armored earthen dam, the Army Corps of Engineers recommended Friday in a preliminary report to Congress.... "Clearly they have a basis to state that there's not good economic justification for deep-draft," said John Lopez, director of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation's coastal sustainability program. "The shallow draft, we don't have the same kind of historical information to do so, but it's compelling, also."

The domestic crimes committed against New Orleans residents from ignoring this info made available years prior to Katrina and the failed response by GW Bush FEMA (Homeland Security) needs to be a trial, including any investigation of a controlled levee breach during the storm itself..
