Bomb explodes near Santiago TV station

by EFE & anonymous Thursday, Sep. 06, 2007 at 10:34 PM

We denounce the communications media for their complicity with the rich and powerful. Their work transforms them into one more instrument of capitalist domination.

Bomb explodes near Santiago TV station

Santiago, Aug 31 (EFE).- A bomb attack caused infrastructure damage near the Canal 13 TV station, located some 20 blocks from the downtown area of the Chilean capital.

According to initial information provided by the Carabineros militarized police, the explosion occurred at 8:30 p.m. Thursday (0030 GMT Friday) and caused alarm among the station's workers and the audience that was attending the recording of a live program.

Carabineros said no one was injured in the explosion.

Witnesses told reporters that a strong blast was felt and a blaze broke out in the lower part of San Cristobal hill, where the majority of Chile's network television channels are located.

Images broadcast by Canal 13 showed that the attackers broke through a protective fence and threw the device in the direction of the station's back patio.

Pamphlets that alluded to an unidentified subversive group and which accused the news media of "being with the capitalist power" were found nearby.

The anarchist group also called for a violent protest on Sept. 11, remembered in Chile as the date in 1973 when Socialist President Salvador Allende was overthrown in a coup led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet, who ruled with an iron fist until 1990.

President Michelle Bachelet, a member of the Concertacion coalition that has ruled the country since the return to democracy, has been accused of not doing enough to improve workers' lives despite the prosperity deriving from the soaring international price of copper, Chile's main export.

The bomb attack came a day after protests called by the CUT labor federation to demand greater social justice left 50 people injured - 34 of them police - and 740 arrested in Chile.

"Never before has Chile had so much wealth, but never before has there been so much inequality," CUT boss Arturo Martinez said Wednesday.

Flyer About the Attack on Canal 13

We denounce the communications media for their complicity with the rich and powerful. Their work transforms them into one more instrument of capitalist domination.

They want to sell us objectivity and neutrality but we’re not buying it. Their investigative journalism has always looked to denounce the efforts of the poorest with the desire to criminalize them. Never have they raised their accusing finger against the bosses’ abuses.

They make fashionable speech about the revolving door and the lack of heavy-handed justice, but they have been seen asking for the murders of Ariel Antonioletti, Claudia López, Daniel Menco, Alex Lemún, Rodrigo Cisternas, and so many others assassinated by the repression within democracy.

Do their top stories or their special programs demonstrate the disinterest of the population? Because the murderers did not receive any castigation for their acts, nor has Belisario Velasco been denounced as the intellectual author of the assassination of Antonioletti.

We are not deceived, they are not neutral journalism but are journalism complicit with the rich and powerful. The poor interest them as far as they are criminalized by them or their misery is transformed into ratings.

Down with the Concertación and its Government for the Rich!
