A united coalition of San Diego and Los Angeles activists protested the dedication of a statue honoring ex-governor and supporter of Proposition 187, Pete Wilson.

DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO- Over 150 people gathered in Horton Plaza, San Diego to protest the dedication of a statue in honor of former California Mayor Pete Wilson. Considered to be the "Godfather of Proposition 187", Wilson used his office to target the Mexican and "Central American" community. Prop. 187 was later deemed to be unconstitutional and illegal. The crowd chanted "Tear down the statue! Tear down the hate!", disrupting the dedication ceremony across the street honoring Wilson. At times, Wilson gestured to the crowd, acknowledging that the protesters were making their message heard loud and clear. The protest was coordinated by San Diego activist Enrique Morones. Several groups were represented: Border Angels, Gente Unida, Mexica Movement (Los Angeles), Union del Barrio (San Diego), and many others from both the San Diego and Los Angeles areas. Enrique Morones and his coalition plans to continue protesting/boycotting Horton Plaza, until the statue is removed. Those interested in supporting the effort are urged to contact Border Angeles, Gente Unida, or Enrique Morones. hey ya'll! just wanted to congratulate you on all the great work! it was great to be there confronting such a concrete example of white supremacy!
my favorite part was when all of us were all chanting at the same tune "SHAME" and "Tear down the statue, Tear down the hate."
It was also great to meet Enrique Morones and others who are participating.
Great work! we are making history!
beautiful work! beautifully organized!
Tlazocamati! Citlalmina

Hello, Your site is very impressive. Wonderful activist work. I am an activist but I am somewhat of a beginner. I am amazed that as I research, I continuously discover the "unrecorded" or erased histories of the oppressed. I did not learn of the true story of the indigenous peoples of this land until I reached adulthood, and I find that to be very disturbing. We have all been lied to, betrayed, taken for fools. The continuous erasure of people's histories allows for the repitition of these types of violations over and over and over, as it is still ongoing today with this constructed "war on terror" that never even existed in the first place.. It is more accurately a "war OF terror." the colonizations and conquests that have repeatedely taken place all over the globe are atrocious tragedies. they are horrific. Then the history books tell a one-sided misleading version which is simply shameful. We are currently losing our rights on a daily basis as they have now passed laws to deny us of our right to peacefully protest, they are violating the Constitution by passing this bill to indefinitely detain people for no reason without being charged, now they are going to start strip searching people for minor offenses. I believe that our voting process has been compromised. It doesn't matter how we vote, they've got it rigged just like everything else. Our entire system is falling apart and they do nothing in the form of seeking solutions.. What is going on here? What can we do to get rid of these people who are robbing us blind and making more people homeless every day!! Thank you for taking the time to put such a wonderful grassroots project of activism and solidarity out here.. Spread the word and grow in numbers.. You must reach as many people with your information as possible, and join together with other marginalized communities. We need to start a movement for single mothers as we are under attack and mothers and their children are the current targets of being victimized as well. They seek to criminalize us, cut us off from any benefits, want to pass laws claiming that single motherhood is "child neglect," they don't care if we are homeless. They want to throw all of us in prison camps just like the holocaust. That's where we're heading if we don't find a way to get the power back to the people....
