LAPD attack thousands of peaceful protestors at Immigrant Rights Rally!

by Ernesto Arce Wednesday, May. 02, 2007 at 8:03 PM
earce at kpfk dot org

Immigrant Rights rally at McCarthur Park near downtown LA turns ugly as an LAPD SWAT team attack peaceful protestors gathered for an immigrant rights rally.

I'm literally still catching my breath after running a good couple of miles from the LAPD officers who plunged into an immigrant right's rally in a heavily Latino neighborhood.

Earlier, at least 7 to 10,000 protestors congregated at MaCarthur Park just west of downtown LA. It was a peaceful, and- as National Lawyer's Guild legal observer stated- "uneventful" march.

Things didn't actually get out of hand until a police motorcade forced their way into a large circle of people who were watching aztec danzantes near the southeast corner of the park on Alvarado. A squad of cops on bike followed. They were then followed by riot cops on foot.

On the opposite end of the park, several hundred yards away, another large scuffle broke out involving dozens of activists. That quickly escalated as dozens of cops in riot gear filled the intersection. Then, suddenly, they retreated.

I guess you can say it was the calm before the storm.

Less than an hour later, after leaving the main stage area, I noticed people running to the southeast corner of the park where there was a whole lot of commotion.

Without warning, cops descended into a park full of families, homeless and handicapped individuals and street cart vendors. They were merciless.

Sanjukta Mitra Paul, on duty with the NLG, says LAPD offers of allowing her to speak with a chief never materialized. She also says she never got word of the police order for protestors to disburse. Although there had been mention of an 'unlawful assembly,' there was never any order for protestors to leave or risk arrest.

For the next 30 minutes, hundreds of activists and by standers were shot, beaten by night sticks and run out of the park. The police had no intention of entertaining requests from people who were not able to move quickly enough. They were forcefully hit on the legs until they were immobile.

The cops didn't only move people out of the perimeters of the park, they chased through the park firing at anyone who might have been an obstacle. I witnessed many people who were shot at from the back. Children and entire families were being violently pushed or beaten. An elderly woman cried out for help but few were willing to run back in the face of fast-approaching SWAT police.

We were chased onto 7th street and forced at least 6 blocks west. The police tried to cordone off the entire area but most protestors didn't stick around. It was frightening for even seasoned protestors.

In retrospect, and putting it in context, the police are there to protect business interests and the private property of the wealthy. When a mass demonstration like last year's Great March included a successful economic boycott and work strike, the business class feels threatened. And the police are impulsed to move in however strategic ways they're ordered to.

I'm sure the cops know that many activists in the crowd will share their stories with many frightened friends and family members in the community. They know they've struck fear into the hearts of thousands of people.

Don't be surprised if the next march is considerably smaller.

Jim is not an Anarchist. I have this weird feeling that it's SOS or Minuteman trying to have activist go against each other.
can Indy Media find out where that came from (IP ADDRESS)
and post it up here?

AGREED

by unannounced Wednesday, May. 02, 2007 at 9:19 PM

Agreed....when will the provacateaurs go home to their wives and stop interupting the lives of honest people. and I hope that we, as the people, can learn to spot them first, and quicker, and i wish we could organize a way to debunk them and make them ineffective.....as it were, it was probably "JIM" (jim crow?) and his buddies who were paid to throw shit at the cops. there were families, little kids, elders and pregnant ladies there!!!! why does this continue to happen? the cycle of violence and intoleration must stop.

lapd attacks peaceful macarthur pk gathering

by jubilee Wednesday, May. 02, 2007 at 9:32 PM
jubileeshine@hotmail.com

lapd riot cops unprovoked attacked the permitted, peaceful gathering of families & activists around 6pm, with motorcycles & firing plastic bullets & swinging batons, with the apparent objective of clearing the entire park vicinity of everybody at all. the maneuvers were unrelenting & merciless. even credentialed media were caught in the onslaught. many videos captured the assault & will soon be on the net. bratton is working hard to spin the p.r. version, but many witnesses will affirm that any reaction to lapd was well after their tightly organized storming of the park grounds.

"Jim Anarchist"

by history buff Wednesday, May. 02, 2007 at 9:52 PM

This reeks of COINTELPRO.

No, COINTELPRO is not a thing of the past. The feds lied when they said they shut it down. It's still ongoing. In some respects, it's much more sophisticatedthee days. They've had decades to refine it. Other aspects haven't changed a bit.

Here's a good place to start learning about it's history:

Jim's little speech there doesn't sound sophisticated. It sounds like someone with neither personal experience nor training, just working from stereotypes.

Mentirosos

by Alf Thursday, May. 03, 2007 at 4:36 AM

It is obvious from that guy's comments that he isnt some government provocatuer, but rather a pathetic individual opposed to imigration thinking that making up lies and ridiculing an act of police brutality is amusing and excusable. It's called not having enough intelligence or balls to debate this argument fairly, or address pro immigrant views without a police squad protecting their scared little arses.

I attended the DTLA march earlier in the day and also witnessed uneccesary police aggression in the supposed line of "maintaining order", which meant acting like a dick when people asked you questions politely and yelling/intimidating/pushing at folks for minor mistakes like stepping off the sidewalk or trying to exit off of a side street. I can only assume this was the testosterone buildup before abusing newscasters at the Parque.

Caught in the act.....

by Lord Locksley Thursday, May. 03, 2007 at 6:12 PM

Draw your own conclusions. In part one you will hear the cops talking about being pelted with rocks and bottles at around the 11 minute mark. People were throwing stuff from apartments too. At around the 14 minute mark someone starts a fire. Note that the media ignored many of these facts.

http://www.alhambra-insider.info/rad...pts/LAPD01.mp3

In part two the rowdiness starts around the 05:30 mark. Some jokes around 10:50. At around 14:10 there is talk of people throwing bottles at cars. At 16 minutes they start going after some of the mobsters

What an Email

by second hand Thursday, May. 03, 2007 at 10:18 PM

Yeah, that email smells fake. A real anarchist email address is like, "propertyistheft@yahoo.com" or "everydayrevolt@excite.com". Someone is posting fake stuff so they can point at Indymedia and say "see, this anarchist has the email pig_hate".

by From their own mouth Friday, May. 04, 2007 at 3:57 AM

"I am sick-"

by Do Tell Friday, May. 04, 2007 at 9:11 AM

An Iraqi vet, huh? And now a police officer in the LAPD.
Learned how to be a real asshole, towards your 'civilian' charges by your training there, eh? Get some promotions by the attitude your ilk have adopted straight from combat in that illegal war and then you get to swagger around here with weapons but have a racist reason on-"how this country is falling apart".
What's next, maybe some Willy Peter called in as well as helicopter gunships on the people who pay your salary and who you gave an oath to, to protect the constitution?
Here's a word from another vet who knows the reason of why you're thinking this crap.
Brainwashed.

"doesn't sound sophisticated."

by history buff Friday, May. 04, 2007 at 8:25 PM

That doesn't mean it isn't. It could be an act. Feigning simplicity to sound sincere and believable is an age old and time tested trick. Listen to what he is saying, not how. He's saying the cops were responding to a provocation. Cops often justify their brutality this way. And even if this guy is telling the truth, and there was provocation, that doesn't mean the provocateurs weren't cops in disguise, or people in the pay of the cops. Use of agents provocateur to spark a conflict is a very old trick.

I'm not saying that for certian this guy is a fraud, just that we should be very, very cautious of what he says, and not just believe him without further proof. He just showed up. That's good enough reason not to trust him. His story backs the cops' version. That, too, is suspicious.

new rules

by Really New World Order Saturday, May. 05, 2007 at 12:44 AM

Let's try this.
Stop recruiting former military, in fact cease participation of former military in armed police duties.
There is a dangerous shoot first mentality coming from the reflex to threat response they are training the new all volunteer combat personnel.
This won't be enough, of course, when these same individuals are turned on by the very system they are now protecting, but until the are replaced by robot enforcers jockeyed by meth heads behind video screens; and since the psychological screening is a vicious joke, the need for self defense and patrols, internal ( roving patrols ) and external (sentries/lookouts ) security is essential.
You know damn well this happens all too predictably so there is no excuse for sloppy organization and lack of defensive strategies.
As stated by the member of the LAPD, they want a war.

thank you all

by Change Saturday, May. 05, 2007 at 5:45 PM

We should consider the following.

The arm of rule by force is well positioned and protected by the compromised judicial system and the political cover it enjoys.
They have already mapped tactics for mass demonstrations and will continue to use them perhaps increase the 'effect' until a muzzled media ignores these 'incidents' entirely by distraction or blackout and all the flap inside the outraged community will be contained within the group of targeted populations.

As a political vehicle we need to abandon the grounds they command and begin evading their response framework.
Perhaps many smaller, actions in different locations, like selected neighborhoods, simultaneously.
Any ideas?

LEARN or LOSE!

by HOW AGENTS WORK & HOW COPS LIE Thursday, May. 17, 2007 at 3:44 PM

"doesn't sound sophisticated."

"That doesn't mean it isn't. It could be an act. Feigning simplicity [but clumsy, boorish simplicity in a way someone authentically leftist wouldn't use] to sound sincere and believable is an age old and time tested trick. ... that doesn't mean the provocateurs weren't cops in disguise, or people in the pay of the cops. Use of agents provocateur to spark a conflict is a very old trick.

...He just showed up. That's good enough reason not to trust him. His story backs the cops' version. That, too, is suspicious."

VERY TRUE.

Or since the police LIE -- and they LIE or REVERSE THE STORY and SEQUENCE OF EVENTS -- ALL THE TIME -- it's remotely possible that the COPS themselves physically PROVOKED _some_ people -- by shoving, baton-poking, manhandling and generally abusing the crowd -- into throwing light objects (like plastic bottles) as a form of symbolic protest at the cops AFTER the cops became abusive to others in the crowd. It's called the cops PROVOKING A PRETEXT OR EXCUSE for the cops to start their rampage.
