The International Union, Security, Police, Fire Professionals of America (SPFPA) has announced today that private screeners working at KC Airport and Rochester NY will soon be voting to have Union Rights. The first election is scheduled for three days starting this Thursday for 500 plus KC Screeners and May 24th for 170 private screeners working at Rochester NY Airport for McNeil Security Services.

"If the SPFPA is successful in organizing these two groups this would make history" stated Steve Maritas, SPFPA Organizing Director "since no other labor organization has ever been certified by the National Labor Relations Board to represent private screeners, there are only 5 airports that use private screeners and we will represent two of the five once these elections are conducted, with more to come!

In a decision recognized by the press as having national significance, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in Washington D.C. in a 4-1 decision involving Firstline Transportation Security, Inc, found that Firstline, a private company that provides passenger and baggage screening services at Kansas City International Airport in Kansas City, Missouri, pursuant to a contract with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), is subject to the Board's jurisdiction.

Thus, the NLRB found that employees of Firstline Transportation Security, Inc are covered by the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) and can organize for the purposes of bargaining collectively with their employer.

Firstline Transportation Security, Inc ( 347 NLRB No. 40 - 06/28/2006)

Back in 2005 the NLRB conducted an election to decide if the private screeners working at KC Airport wish to unionize with the SPFPA. In that election the SPFPA were just a few votes short from becoming the first union ever to successfully be certified to represent private screeners.

Since 9/11 the Bush Administration has prohibited federal screeners from unionizing but back in March of 2007 the Senate voted in favor by a vote of 51-46 to give 45,000 airport screeners the same union rights as border patrol, customs and immigration agents, despite a veto threat from the White House.

The International Union, Security, Police, Fire Professionals of America (SPFPA) is the largest, oldest and fastest growing 9 (b)(3) security police union in the world today. Representing Security Police professionals working at the Pentagon, NASA, Cape Canaveral, Disney. Nuclear Facilities, Federal Courts, Center for Disease Control, Department of Homeland Security and many other high profile terrorist targets.
