The Highland Park Vigil Marks Four Years

Sunday marked the four-year anniversary of the weekly peace vigil in Highland Park. Besides protesting U.S. imperialism and reminding people about global warming, participants also brought food, which was given to the local homeless. (Food scraps were later composted.)

Altogether, eight people participated in the vigiling (which is a lot for this vigil, which started out with about 80 people four years ago), and about seven homeless people were fed.

Since the Highland Park vigil first began, on the Sunday preceding the 2003 invasion of Iraq, countless signs have been made, many of which were hung on clotheslines behind the vigil.

During the last four years, this vigil has branched out into other forms of activism, including (obviously) helping the local homeless, environmental issues, and counter recruitment.

Both the Sunday Highland Park vigil and the Saturday Eagle Rock vigil are organized by the Northeast LA Radical Neighbors for Peace through Justice (aka: NELA Rad).

These vigils have special events throughout the year. Coming soon in Highland Park is the annual Resurrect Peace vigil on Easter Sunday. (Details will be announced on the LA IndyMedia Calendar.)

...one of which reads, "Stop Bush's War on Terra." Some hecklers think that we've mispelled "terror"--despite an image of Earth featured on the sign.
