MAYWOOD, CA, 12 November 2006--Maywood has a problem, and it isn't the minutemen who invaded the small city outside of Los Angeles yesterday.  Maywood has a police problem.  The minutemen at yesterday's protest were penned in behind wooden sawhorse barricades and fronted by a hundred or more aggressive police, guarding the minutemen from two hundred and fifty peaceful Maywood residents and supporters.

Save Our State, a group that routinely contributes their time and resources to hassling day laborers, joined with leaders of the California Coalition for Immigration Reform, Minuteman Project, and the Crispus Attucks Brigade, all area anti-immigrant groups.  Together they managed to pull together seventy or so supporters to protest Maywood's resolution to be a sanctuary city, refusing federal funds to aid in immigrant roundups.

They were led into Maywood with a police escort, and the police spent the day serving as shock troops for the racist agenda.

After some minutemen cars were vandalized at a September protest in Maywood, Save Our State arranged with Maywood police to protect their vehicles.  The cop escort led the minutemen into a gated parking lot off Slauson.  Apparently they appropriated the parking lot without notifying the owner, who later in the day called a towing service to haul the vehicles away.  The cops turned the tow truck away.

Pro-Maywood counterprotestors were kept a hundred feet away, mostly behind heavy metal barricades across Slauson Boulevard, while police, at times with rifles drawn, surrounded the city's residents in the street and from rooftops on the remaining three sides.

It didn't take ten minutes after the minutemen showed up when the cops, an "emergency response" force from area law enforcement, were wrestling to rescue a piñata of a Ku Klux Klansman tied by Maywood supporters to a traffic light behind the Maywood crowd.

Twenty minutes later, at 10:30 a.m., a minuteman was allowed to leave the pen and stroll through the Maywood crowd handing out Mexican flags with an orange S.O.S mark on them, presumably to set up a photo-op for the minutemen.  He finally threw them on the ground when they were refused.  A few people chased him out and, as he crossed to barricade into "no-man's land" between the minutemen and the protestors, the cops stopped him.  When he flashed his wallet at the cops, he got an escort across the zone between the two groups.  Meanwhile, one of the protestors dogging him crossed a couple of steps beyond the barricade and was thrown down, handcuffed, and led away.  It was only after another protestor complained to the Maywood mayor that Sam Zislman, attorney at law and professor at Irvine University, was plucked from the minutemen cohort and taken off to jail.  Both protestors were released a few hours later.

Reportedly, another counterprotestor, perhaps two, were arrested later in the day, and one was shot with a rubber bullet.  The cops pulled one arrestee's shirt over his face and led him, on their way to the cop car, through a gauntlet of minutemen shouting abuse.  Some counterprotestors managed to lob eggs at the minutemen from a rooftop.

While Maywoodians chanted, "Desde Oaxaca a Maywood, los obreros vercerón," the minutemen replied by blaring an unrecognizable cowboy song and bullhorned, "Speak English--we don't understand you."

When one protestor touched a barricade, Sgt. Barajas, holding a tear gas gun, warned the protestor that he would "light 'em up" if he touched the barricade again.  The minutemen called out, "Who's streets?  Our streets!"  The irony wasn't lost on those who had counted on their police to protect and serve them.

Along Slauson Boulevard a dozen county sheriff's deputies, assisting the Maywood police, faced the people, while three faced the invaders.  Cops, often without badges displayed, from Maywood, Whittier, Southgate, Bell Gardens (at least one masked without a nametag), Downey, and Bellwood manned barricades along the side streets.  They lined up practically shoulder-to-shoulder against the counterprotestors, as a sheriff's helicopter occasionally circled overhead.

"We are indigenous. We will never leave!" "The citizens of Maywood order you to leave!" demanded the counterprotestors.  They began a chant of "Smallpox infested squatters!" aimed at the mostly European-descent minutemen.  The minuteman cranked up "Yankee Doodle Dandy" on their PA system.

By noon, many of the Maywood supporters gone to another event, leaving mostly Maywood residents and the Mexica Movement, who arrived at 6:00 a.m. and remained until the end.

By about 1:00 p.m. the minutemen began to orchestrate their exit.  They began by walking in a circle with their flags.  Then they blared Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA," a peculiar choice given its despondent outlook on the condition of those born here.

Meanwhile, on Fishburn Avenue, twenty cops drew their batons and shoved thirty protestors backwards, including a women carrying a baby, to move them down the street from one of the parking lot gates.  With police cover, the minutemen taunted the counterprotestors from behind the parking lot's cast-iron fence.  One protestor, after some disagreement, held up a small U.S. flag, asked the cops if it was illegal to burn it, and proceeded to do so. The police held off a handful of remaining protestors for twenty minutes after the minuteman cars had exited, until they withdrew to the intersection of Fishburn and Slauson and the counterprotestors followed.  

Officer Ruiz called one counterprotestor who asked him a question a "b*tch."  A few minutes later, a minutewoman had moved west to the barricade on Slauson and Fishburn, and was photographing the counterprotestors.  When this reporter asked Officer Acosta to move to the minutemen's barricade fifty feet down east on Slauson to photograph the few remaining minutemen, Acosta said no.  When asked who was in charge, Acosta answered, "No one's in charge."  He quickly revised that when it was noted and said to talk to City Hall. When a counterprotestor asked who the officer in charge was, Acosta repeated "Talk to City Hall" over and over.

Left on Fishburn and Slauson was Ted Hayes, organizer of the Crispus Attucks Brigade and fresh from unsuccessfully trying to mobilize Chicago's African-American community against immigrant sanctuary-seeker Elvira Arellano, with funding from the California Coalition for Immigration Reform.  He had a few sidekicks, including SOS executive director Joseph Turner, as he pranced behind thirty cops and shouted, "Cowards! anyone who won't fight is a coward!"

Maywood has an unpleasant history with its cops, who, until a year ago, routinely used traffic stops to confiscate immigrants' vehicles so that the local tow-truck company could sell them.  That prompted the election of a predominantly Chicano city council, which promptly denounced HR4437, the heinous Sensenbrenner anti-immigrant bill and declared Maywood a sanctuary for immigrants, free from police harassment.  After today's event the city's cops were in more trouble, as residents planned to address the cops' behavior at the protest at Tuesday night's city council meeting.  It seems that the minutemen have inadvertently solidified the community against the cops, and confirmed the city council as residents' haven.

After the protest, Save Our State report in two threads that they went to the Citadel Mall in the City of Commerce, where they taunted, air horned, and ultimately pepper sprayed and tazered shoppers.  One shopper responded by punching one of the minuteman's car window.  The manager of Rudy's Diner refused to seat the white bangers at the restaurant and insisted they take their food to go.

An anti-racist protestor was struck by a rubber bullet at the Maywood protest on Saturday. It hit him on the left side of his torso leaving a fairly deep perfectly circular red wound about 1 1/2 inch in diameter. He had only been wearing a t-shirt at the time.

After the racist Minutemen/SOS had left Maywood, the comrade showed me the wound. I asked him if he wanted me to take him to the hospital because he was obviously in a lot of pain. He said no and just asked me to drive him home.

He mentioned that the pig who shot him didn't even give a warning. The fascist cop just leveled his gun and fired at him for no reason at all. After being hit, the comrade was also chased by the cops for several blocks but thankfully was able to escape.

I told him he should post pictures of his wound on Indymedia to show the world the tactics of the racist cops we had to deal with in Maywood. From providing motorcycle escorts to security guard detail over the racists cars to shooting at unarmed peaceful demonstrators the paramilitary police forces clearly showed on Saturday that they overtly SUPPORT the fascist/racist agenda of SOS and the minutemen.

On Saturday I was over in Maywood to legal observe a protest against the minutemen. My group and I arrived in Maywood at 9:30am. All was well for the time being, the minutemen had not shown up yet and the maywood police had set up barricades on two sides of the street. We were on Slauson and Pine. The Minutemen were set up west of us also on Slauson. Each barricade was intended to keep the minutemen on one side and we were on the other, about 80-100 yards apart. The police had set up a surveillance spot on top of the grocery store, on the corner directly behind our side (which was not a neutral point of surveillance when you consider the minutemen are over 100 yards away from them on the other side).

At 10am the Minutemen showed up on their side. They had full police escort. The police escorted them into a private parking lot on Slauson for a building called Fallas Y Paredes. The police set up posts in the parking lot to protect the minutemen vehicles, would not allow patrons to go into the business and when several of the renters of the property protested and called tow-trucks, the police refused to let them enter. (I am curious to know under what authority the Maywood Police can do this?)

At about 10:15, a minutemen came over to our side, wearing a bandana on his head with Marijuana leaves on it and black t-shirt. He was passing out Mexican Flags.

(Does anyone know who this is?) When the community discovered he was a minutemen, several young men asked him to leave. He refused to leave. He and another man got into a verbal dispute, and the minuteman started to walk through the barricades to cross back to the minuteman side. Our community member was grabbed from behind the barricades by several police officers and pushed down to the floor and handcuffed.

The minuteman flashed a police badge and was allowed to walk back to the minuteman side. At 12:30pm, my friend who is a photographer and I went over to the Fallas y Parades side of the street to ask the management if they had given the Minutemen permission to park their cars in the driveway. The information above was reiterated by several of the managers there and when I attempted to speak with the police they would not answer my questions. (I urge Maywood residents to call the Maywood Police Department and ask under what law they are allowed to protect the Minuteman, close off a PRIVATE parking lot, and then prevent business owners from exercising control of their own property? (323) 562-5700.) I went back to Slauson and Pine to continue to support the pro-immigrant protestors. At 1:34pm another individual from our side crossed over the barricade. I was sitting over on a sidewalk when I saw the commotion. My friend and I ran over there. I wanted to try and get people behind the barricades and my friend was going to take pictures of the police. This second man was taken down by five police officers and arrested and taken away.

I was yelling at people to get back. I was right behind the barricades motioning people with my hands and screaming for them to get back. A white police officer, with the name badge R. West saw me doing this, came over to me and with both hands pushed me to the floor. I fell back and saw several men come up behind me to defend me. The whole time police were shoving and pushing people back. I got up and continued to ask people to get back. (If anyone has pictures of a woman being pushed down to the floor or the man who was arrested, please forward them to me.)

At 1:45pm another individual from our side crossed the barricade and when I saw him do this I yelled at him to get back. I must have yelled three times when I heard a shot and I saw a blue rubber pellet hit his left side near his abdomen. We all witnessed the man flinch from the pain of being hit. (No warning was given, and there were women and children right behind the protestor. Had this pellet missed him, it could have SERIOUSLY injured a child.) I yelled at him to get back and at this point, six police officers charged him. The protestor ran in the opposite direction. An additional four then followed him. I didn't want to leave the protest site unattended and so my friend ran after the police. There were patrol cars and officers on foot to arrest this man. When they returned to the site, several of the police officers shoved past protestors to get back behind our barricade. Things were very intense at this point and young children were crying.

I took names of witnesses for each incident and gave people my phone number to call me. I feel that the police treated our side as if we were criminals. They were standing facing our side (not the other side) holding batons. They were aiming pellet guns at our side (not the other side).

I would like to file a complaint against the Maywood Police Department. I was attempting to assist them in their work and trying to keep the protestors back from the barricades, I was not crossing the barricade when I was pushed to the floor. If anyone has information on how I should go about doing this it would be greatly appreciated. I have already contacted a few attorneys to inquire if they will assist me.

As I was leaving the protest a woman with her three year old daughter approached me and asked if I was an attorney. She wanted to know if there were going to be more protests and who she could contact to get more involved. She spoke with me for a little while and when she was done her daughter looked up at me and said, I just wanted to ask you if the police are going to kill us. She had tears in her eyes.

He spotted me, got in my face (he's trying to grow a beard now ... without a whole lot of success), started the full court press tactics and funneled me toward more of his buddies who also recognized me. I saw familiar poorly dressed characters that have popped up in Laguna Beach, Hollywood and Downtown. I got surrounded and one guy kicked me in the ankle. I dropped the items I was distributing, pushed past the guy separating me from the barricade and went through the barricade. I figured I'd rather get attacked by the cops than have to deal with the goons whacking me around. The riot cops all ran past me and started dealing with the misbehaving anchor babies who were having a fit because The White Man had been on their side.

I see that the police once again committed massive crimes against the citizens, protected from all reprisals from behind their guns. In a polite society, these criminals would have been dragged to the nearest light post, be given a fair trial, and be punished for committing violent assault with deadly weapons against unarmed, non-violent, peaceful citizens.

White supremacists -- indeed no citizen -- is required to leave when standing or walking on a public sidewalk. (The fact that white supremacists were allowed to try to instigate violence among the anti-hate group is irrelevant.) I mention it because the legal observer's report tends to unreasonably indicate that the white supremacist not leaving was some how committing a crime.

Joe Turner still works with a republican asemble member in San Bernadino. Majority of them have voted for Bush for the first election. When I went to oppose SOS for the first time, some of them had Bush's placard and Bush bumper stickers. They recently supported Tan Ngyen for the OC congressional race. So whats the story here? Both sides claim the other side is racists. I actually believe both sides are racsists. To me this is not a debate that has to go to the extremes to prove one side is right and one side is wrong. If that were the case, I think both sides should meet in the desert and go at it. This would never happen and would solve nothing.and you all would still hate each other.

Where I differ on the issue is fairness. What is the fare thing to do. I have both liberal and conservative views on illegal immigration so where does that leave the average citizen on this issue.

I guess we are at an area of polarization. You have to pick sides. How do you do that? You certainly gain no rational perspectives from visiting websites like this or for that matter, any website. Everyone has an agenda. Does there have to be a right and wrong over this issue? If there has to be a right and wrong on this issue I guess I would tend to lean toward the anti-illegal immigrant movement.

Why you may ask ? I guess it comes down to the law. You either respect and abide by it or you don't. It wouldn't be prudent for any citizen to pick and choose what laws to enforce and what laws to ignore. If we engage in this then we effectively leave ourselves open for tyrany and opression. We lose the very freedom that gives you all the right to protest and the right to counter protest. We become the servants of the master.

In fairness to SOS. The Neo-nazis who showed up in Laguna last year were not affilated with SOS. In fact, SOS denounced them openly on their forums. The Neo-nazis were stormfronters who thought they could ride SOS's coattails. It didn't go over well. As soon as the nazis showed up SOS left. If you check the boards about that incident you will clearly see that there is no relationship between nazis and SOS. Its just a leftist propaganda trick to sell you the idea that secure border activists are racist. Bunch of hooey. Notice that the nazis never showed up at another rally again.

it is not only laguna beach the neonazi stood with SOS. They stood with them in Baldwin Park, Victorvile, glendale, burbank, garden grove, etc. SOS even went to a neonazi sponsored protest at Victorvile.

Leslie Radford: It seems to me when you work for the media you should be FAIR and also have FACTS included in your story, not just your opinion or partial lies. Parts of your article that I have problems with include you saying SOS routinely hassles day laborers, you called the Sensenbrenner bill heinous, you called us "white bangers", you called the illegals 250 PEACEFUL residents & supporters, you didn't bother to mention why that one guy had his shirt pulled over his head when he was being led away (he was spitting at us) PLUS our people didn't just start pepper spraying & tazering shoppers after the protest-we were taunted & one of THEM reached for someone's camera & so he got it! What's in it for you to write biased stories like this? What's in it for ME is that I simply love my country which is being overrun by illegals & it's changing the quality of our (Americans') lives. Those photos of early SOS/Nazi rallies are photos I wish I saw before I got mixed in all this. The little piece of the puzzle I can bring here is that, like I have said before, former and I guess current again SOS member Debbie Sattler told me herself that Joe Turner let the Nazis rally with them. She told me in September 24th of last year in Gilchrist headquarters.
