At least 50-60 people sat down in the street blocking Century Blvd. in front of the Westin Hotel to protest working conditions at the hotel tonight.

Sit downs were also held in front of the Radison hotel. More details to follow.

You've got this all wrong. The police were not the enemy in this event. The union-busting sweatshop hotels were. The police actually helped us make this event as public as it was. They were cooperative, polite and helpful (for a change) and respectful both when they arrested us and in the jail itself.

The damn cops. No one can speak freely without the cops interrupting. I wish I was there to help for the cause.

I watch the limited coverage on the corporate channels and was impressed by all the protestors. I am especially proud of the those who allowed themselves to be arrested( My younger son was arrested, despite his mother fear). I was offended by the corporate reporters who took the hotels' side and failed to balance their broadcast. On the other hand, the Spanish language channels, 52 and 34, though corporately own, were even handed in their reports.

The article made they claim that the conditions are hard at the hotels, yet failed to list any specifics, so if anyone out there has any details instead of buzzwords please post them.

what happend to the real labor movement? The police were not part of this event. They used the event as an opportunity to train their fellow officers so they can become an even stronger and repressive force in our communities. Police have never been helpful to any human rights, civil rights, labor and revolutionary movements here in the U.S. They've only been repressive, violent, and murderous. Who was first created to destory unions? The police. Who was first created to catch runaway slaves? The police. Know your history. Stop sleeping with the enemy. The bed may be comfortable but it's there to kill you in your sleep. Wake up. This is not a show.

Y'all need not be fooled by what you read and the pictures you've seen. This "protest" was so choreographed it made me sick. The organizers, the police, the politicians, they were all there for the same reason: MEDIA ATTENTION. I went to the protest to stand up for immigrant rights and realized I was nothing but an extra in this huge production. Y'all should have been there. You would have left early too.

http://www.unitehere.org/presscenter/release.asp?ID=1185 http://www.hotelworkersrising.org/ There are some facts and figures here: http://www.hotelworkersrising.org/News/ My "read between the lines" is that the industry is rebounding and profits at the big hotels are rising. Average wage for non-union housekeepers is below $9. Average wage for union housekeepers is near $13. (This partly reflects the fact that small hotels are probably not organized, have less revenue, and pay lower wages.) It's a good opportunity to negotiate for raises, if you're working at a big hotel. The only way to get a better deal, if you have a relatively low-skill job, is collective bargaining. Despite the rhetoric about suffering, the people working at the big chain hotels are probably doing better than, say, someone cleaning up at a motel. The issue is certainly more about getting a fair piece of the profits which they helped create.
