Israeli Spends Rosh Hashanah Eve in a US Jail

An Israeli tourist who planned to spend the two-day Rosh Hashanah holiday with friends in the Washington, D.C. area was surprised when Maryland police placed him under arrest for photographing the Fort McHenry Tunnel along Interstate 95.

The interested tourist stopped for a few moments to photograph the tunnel but he apparently attracted the attention of a local resident who phoned police, reporting a man “looking suspicious -- taking photos of the tunnel.”

Maryland police quickly responded and a chase resulted in their successfully catching the tourist’s vehicle. He was immediately taken into custody.

Reports of the incident reached Foreign Ministry officials in Jerusalem, who learned the man arrived in America about six weeks earlier, did have a legal visa and was carrying a valid passport and international driver’s license.

After about four hours, diplomatic officials did manage to persuade police that his actions were benign, and he was released from custody.

LAUREL, Md. - Maryland State Police say they released a 24-year-old Israeli man without charges Friday night after questioning him about photographing the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore.

Investigators say another motorist reported that a man driving a green Dodge minivan was using a camera and appeared to be taking pictures *as he drove through the tunnel*.

Police say the van continued south on Interstate-95 and *then turned back in the other direction* near Laurel.

Officers stopped it on northbound I-95 near Route 198.

A bomb-sniffing dog checked out the car but did not find any explosives.

Police say they found a laptop computer and a digital camera containing pictures of the tunnel inside the van, but nothing else suspicious.

Israeli questioned after taking photos

An Israeli man was questioned and released last night by Maryland State Police after he snapped some photos while driving south through the Fort McHenry Tunnel. Acting on a tip from a motorist, state police stopped the 24-year-old man, who was not identified, on Interstate 95 in Prince George's County about 7 p.m., according to police spokesman Gregory Shipley. Police took him to the College Park barracks for further questioning. Tunnels and bridges are considered potential targets for terrorist attacks. Police found a digital camera in the green 1998 van the man was driving, and the camera contained images of the approach to the tunnel and the tunnel's interior, Shipley said. The man explained that he was on vacation and visiting friends in the Baltimore area. He told police he took the photos because there are no similar tunnels in Israel. He was released about 11:30 p.m. Shipley said the investigation is continuing.
