The voters of Mendocino County have decided that they approved a ballot measure "H" banning growth of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) food crops within their county. Many other counties have followed suit and this pattern of local ordinances against GMO crops is a threat to biotech corporations (Monsanto, Genentech, Bayer/Aventis, etc..) who would prefer to continue on with the trend of pushing small organic farmers out of business and replacing their crop biodiversity with GMO monoculture..

Though the farmers/consumers in Mendocino County wouldn't be directly effected by SB 1056, any other county/region that has not yet passed a GMO free ordinance would no longer be allowed to have any say in whether or not GMO crops are grown in their county/region. SB 1056 states that local regulations will be rendered invalid by the passing of SB 1056. For this reason organic consumers and farmers say "NO on SB 1056!"

"With only a week left until the California legislature adjourns for this year, Senator Florez has again amended SB 1056 to extend the reach of this pending preemptive strike against local action on genetically engineered crops. As it now reads, the bill would preempt local decisions with respect to both seeds and nursery stock. The newly amended bill is attached.

If brought to a vote, the bill will most likely pass the Assembly, so the Senate is perhaps the only place the bill can be stopped. Senate president pro tem Don Perata will play a key role in the fate of the bill, so it's important to let him know we are watching and we expect him to do the right thing by insuring that local rights with respect to this critical issue are preserved. Should it come to a vote, we will also need to be sure Senator Chesbro will take a strong stand against the bill.

BTW, the violent destruction of community farms like SouthCentral farm and the attempted passing of pro-GMO Senate Bill 1056 would take even the basic rights of growing food out of the hands of working class people, leaving the remaining corporate farms (ConAgra, ADM, etc..) with complete control of the food supply via patented GMO seeds..

Following WTO/NAFTA protocol, any community regulation on GMO food crops is deemed as a "free trade barrier" despite how the corporation's actions (GMO pollen drift) are negatively impacting the region's economy/ecosystem..

The hype over weather derivatives is being replaced by real deals, and

everybody’s scrambling for position.

The viewership of the Weather Channel has always skewed decidedly toward the

nerdy. But if the lightning-fast development of the weather derivatives

market is any indication, before long the ratings-challenged cable channel

could reach a whole new audience financial players around the world who have

suddenly become obsessed with occluded fronts, La Niña and other weather

arcana that for years had been the exclusive province of people with

backyard barometers.

While derivatives historians may quibble over the precise date of the first

weather contract some say July 1997, while others say August of that year

everyone in the weather business agrees that the market hit the ground

running.

There has been an explosion of deals in the marketplace and a tremendous

amount of interest on the client side, says Richard Turrin of Paribas’

strategic derivatives group. The industry has seen the birth of a new market

in the last year to 18 months, and in the last six months the growth has

been exponential.

Houston-based energy giant Enron estimates that between 900 and 1,000

transactions have taken place to date, with the notional value of those

deals exceeding .5 billion. Kansas City, Mo.-based Aquila, the unregulated

marketing and trading arm of Utilicorp, puts that figure closer to 1,200.

While energy firms are still the most active in the weather business, other

industries are getting into the game as well. Enron has already acted as

counterparty in deals with manufacturers of snowmobiles and snowblowers, the

film industry and the fertilizer industry, and has fielded inquiries from

theme parks, golf courses, sports-drink makers, car washes and ski resorts.

Aquila boasts transactions with salt producers, ski resorts and other

entertainment companies. In addition to the relatively commonplace

degree-day deals, says Enron’s Lynda Clemmons, a director at the firm, she

has been approached by companies interested in rainfall, snowfall and even

barometric pressure contracts.

Abstract: In conjunction with the DNA barium releases, Avefria I and II, an

experiment was undertaken to determine if radio communication was possible

off the base of a striated plasma created by these barium releases. A

transmitting station was set up to broadcast a steady signal at two HF

frequencies toward the base of the barium striations and two receiving

stations listened for signal returns on the two frequencies. (The chosen

geometry prevented reflections off the sides of the barium cloud from

affecting the experiment). One station heard substantial returns while the

other heard nothing. Data from the first station provide an estimate of the

reflection cross sections for the base of the striated barium cloud. The

negative result from the second station arises partly from limited

sensitivity of equipment but the upper limit on cross section was less than

that seen from the first station. This suggests a directional character for

the signal reflected from the base of the cloud.

California's number one cash crop, a large amount of which is reportedly grown in Mendocino county, has been genetically modified for years.

Just a quick correction, the Mendocino cash crop (either grapes or cannabis) the comment author above mentions was not genetically modified, though both species were hybridized over many generations, a far more natural process of selection within a species, while GMO/GE technology inserts genes from entirely different species, like fish genes into tomatoes (see Cal-Gene "Flavr-Savr"). Tomatoes can be hybridized with other tomatoes, fish hybridized with other fish, but not fish with tomatoe. Hybridization selects based on desireable traits over generations and is similar to what would occur in a natural ecosystem processes. GMO/GE technology is not duplicated in nature, even the "transposons" that exchage gene material in bacteria are not pulling (correctly "bombarding") genes from other species into their own DNA that far along the evolutionary line. Moreover, Mae Wan Ho (author "The Fluid Genome") has disproven the assumption of leading biotech scientists that genetics is fixed and can thus be patented and "owned". Instead, genetics are fluid and subject to change and adaptation like all biomass in the Earth, evolution modifies structures and traits as needed, easier to be caretaker of the ecosystem instead of tampering with the processes of life itself..

BTW, this is not the same as stem cell research, a scientific method of undifferentiated tissue development could eliminate the harsh cruelty of animal testing and heal human diseases with greater accuracy & effectiveness. Stem cell research is what GW Bush is attempting to outlaw, not biotech (GW Bush just luuuuvs biotech corporations!!)
