are most of their victims civilians? Can't they aim? Most of Hizbullah's victims are soldiers. Why is this? See: http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/08/07/mideast.main/index.html (snip) Monday was the 27th day of fighting. So far the conflict has resulted in 98 Israeli deaths, including 35 civilians, the IDF said; in Lebanon, security forces put the death toll at more than 715, most of them civilians. (snip)

"If the IDF is not targeting civilians, then why...are most of their victims civilians? Can't they aim? Most of Hizbullah's victims are soldiers. Why is this?"
That was a softball question. I'll take it though...because Hezbollah clearly hides among civilians. In an article on here, Nasrallah's right hand man blatantly calls them guerillas. Their bases go so far as to share buildings with civilians, gunmen can be found on top of civilian infrastructure. They seem to take pleasure in civilian deaths, god knows they reap the benefits as much as they possibly can, manipulating (often, it seems, through threats) the media to do so.

Did you know that Israel has devastated about three hundred houses in just four years thus making thousands of Palestinians homeless? Did you know that 90 years ago the Arabs of Palestine owned 97.5% of the land, while Jews (native Palestinians and recent immigrants together) owned only 2.5% of the land? And that now the Jews own more than 80%? Did you know that the former Prime Minister of the Zionist entity, Sharon, was on the list of war criminals for killing thousands of innocent Palestinians? Did you know that four prime ministers of Israel, Begin, Shamir, Rabin, and Sharon have taken part in either bomb attacks on civilians, massacres of civilians, or forced expulsions of civilians from their villages? Did you know Sharon was held responsible for the massacre of more than 2, 750 Palestinians in the refugee camps of Sabra and Chatila? The UN qualified the massacre by Sharon as GENOCIDE. Did you know Sharon's commando unit in 1953 razed the Palestinian village of Qibya killing all its citizens and bombed all the houses, mosque and schools? Did you know that the Israel is the only country in the Middle East that has nuclear weapons? Did you know that Israel is the only country in the Middle East that refuses to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and bars international inspections from its sites? Did you know that Israel currently occupies territories of two sovereign nations (Lebanon and Syria) in defiance of United Nations Security Council resolutions? Did you know that Israel has for decades routinely sent assassins into other countries to kill its political enemies? Did you know that high-ranking military officers in the Israeli Defense Forces have admitted publicly that unarmed prisoners of war were executed by the IDF? Did you know that Israel refuses to prosecute its soldiers who have acknowledged executing prisoners of war? Did you know that Israel routinely confiscates bank accounts, businesses, and land and refuses to pay compensation to those who suffer the confiscation? Did you know that Israel blew up an American diplomatic facility in Egypt and attacked a U.S. ship in international waters, killing 33 and wounding 177 American sailors? Did you know that the second most powerful lobby in the United States, according to a recent Fortune magazine survey of Washington insiders, is the Jewish AIPAC? Did you know that Israel stands in defiance of 69 United Nations Security Council Resolutions? Did you know that today's Israel sits on the former sites of more than 400 now-vanished Palestinian villages, and that the Israeli’s re- named almost every physical site in the country to cover up the traces? Did you know that it was not until 1988 that Israelis were barred from running "Jews Only" job ads? Did you know that the Israeli Foreign Ministry pays two American public relations firms to promote Israel to Americans? Did you know that Sharon's coalition government includes a party -- Molodet -- that advocates expelling all Palestinians from the occupied territories? Did you know that Israel’s settlement building increased in the eight years since Oslo? Did you know that settlement building under Barak doubled compared to settlement building under Netanyahu? Did you know that Israel once dedicated a postage stamp to a man who attacked a civilian Palestinian bus and killed several people? Did you know that recently declassified documents indicate that David Ben-Gurion approved of the expulsion of Palestinians in 1948? Did you know that torture by Shin Bet interrogators on Palestinian prisoners is more brutal than what happened in Abu Ghriab in Iraq? Did you know that Palestinian refugees make up the largest portion of the refugee population in the world? Quiz yourself on Israeli Democracy: http://www.palestineremembered.com/index.html Are you aware that: Prior to the 1948 war, Palestinian Christians and Muslims were a two-third majority of the population of Palestine, who owned and operated 93% of Palestine's lands? Prior to the 1948 war, most Israeli Jews were persecuted and dispossessed European Jews who made a one-third minority of the population? For Israel to become a "Jewish majority" it opted to expel and dispossess the two-third Palestinian majority? 80% of the Palestinian people were dispossessed from their homes, farms, and businesses and have been kept out for the past 54 years? 95% of Israel's lands (which is mostly owned by Palestinian refugees) are open for development to Jews only? Israeli-Palestinian citizens live almost in segregated communities (or ghettos) because development is strictly limited outside their villages? Ironically, the word "ghetto" was invented to describe the living conditions of Eastern European Jews in Tsarist Russia! For just being "Jewish" you gain an automatic citizenship in Israel? Plus tens of thousands of dollars in subsidies too. Palestinian Muslims or Christians refugees, who were born in the country and later expelled, cannot gain Israeli citizenship? Of course, unless they convert to Judaism first! Pretending to be Jewish in Israel is punishable by law with up to one year's imprisonment? On the other hand, if you pretend to be a Muslim or Christian the law does you no harm! When the Palestine problem was created by Britain in 1917, more than 92% of the population of Palestine were Arabs and there were at that time no more than 56,000 Jews in Palestine? That Muslim, Christian, and Jewish Palestinians at that time lived in peace with each other? Palestinians in the early 20th century owned 97.5% of the land, while Jews (native Palestinians and recent immigrants together) owned only 2.5% of the land? Close to 4 million Palestinian Muslims and Christians are being subjected to Israeli laws that are different than the laws governing the 4.5 million Israeli Jews? Is this a "democratically" elected apartheid, or not, that is the question? In the occupied West Bank there are "Jewish Roads" and "Non-Jewish Roads"? Israel issues national identity cards where the religion of the card holder is clearly shown in bold type? Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza drive vehicles with license plates that have different coloring than the cars driven by Israeli settlers? Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza hold ID cards that are of different colors than the cards held by Israeli settlers? The only form of Judaism recognized by the "Jewish state" is Orthodox Judaism, so most US Jews could not get married in Israel. Furthermore, the only conversion to Judaism recognized is Orthodox, so most US converts aren't Jewish enough. Just prior to the 1948 war, Jews owned under 7% of Palestine's land, and to increase their share after the war, they passed the "Absentees' Law" which dispossessed the Palestinian majority land owners who later became "absent". What is even more tragic was the passage of an oxymoron law, called "Present Absentees' Law," which dispossessed the Palestinian-Israeli citizens who became internal refugees in Israel. It is worth noting that the internal Jewish refugees were not dispossessed as a result of this racist law. The U.S. funneled into the Israeli economy over 130 billion dollars, which is almost twice the amount devoted to rebuilding Western Europe after WW II! Israeli democracy is a facade for "Jewish Democracy?" Israel has nuclear weapons, and it was close to dropping one on Cairo in 1973? Israeli soldiers use human shields in battle to minimize their casualties? Israel killed over 20,000 Lebanese and Muslims (90% of whom are civilians) with American made and paid for weapons? Ariel Sharon was under indictment in Belgium for war crimes against Palestinian civilians?

Becky Johnson: "These numbers alone prove Israel is not targeting civilians." Which of the two statements above -- the visual or the verbal -- is more persuasive? Which one is less likely to be one person's willfull arrogant spin? If you're a zionist, you'll of course say some Hizbollah psychopath snatched a little baby out of its mother's arms, snapped its neck, and plastered it with dirt in order to frame the valiant beyond-reproach IDF. That's why any rational person will consider your opinion on this less than meaningless. If you noticed Becky's omission of the Beirut airport in her map of Israel's "surgical" assault, you're on the right track (where did the map come from Beck-O? Watch how she evades this question: "I don't think the point is where it came from so much as yamby namby mamby pamby....") By the way, I saw something in the MSM the other day that took my breath away: Time magazine ran a feature article that gave Lebanon and Hizbullah a SYMPATHETIC TREATMENT!!!! The article made a lot of the same points George Galloway made in that wonderful TV segment where he brutalized Murdock's sock-puppet. I couldn't believe my fucking eyes! It takes me back to Spring of '01, the last time US mainstream media showed the will to decisively put a dunce cap on Israel. And then -- hey-hey wuddayaknow -- the cavalry came to the rescue in the form of 19 Arab amateurs pulling off the most complex suicide mission in history. Shnapp! Format the C: drive. The modern Israeli state and its supporters *often* invoke the Holocaust as an excuse for their actions today. It's a prop in an advertising campaign. We're supposed to feel guilty for something that somebody else did before we were born, and let that guilt excuse our looking the other way when Israel treats it's victims the way the Third Reich treated its victims. When somebody calls them on how much like nazis they are they say, but we aren't like Nazis because we don't use gas chambers. They treat non Jews like untermenchen, they steal their land, they herd them into ghettos, slaughter them at will, often at random, and we're supposed to let them slide because they haven't used gas chambers. Yet.
To use the dead of the Holocaust to sell a modern campaign of racist terror is an utter desecration of the memory of every Holocaust victim. And the worst of it is that these despicable racists only count the six million dead Jews as "the" Holocaust. To them, the other thirty something million victims don't count. These people are disgusting. They make Jews look like the Nazis made Germans look. No wonder the anti-Semites find it so easy to sell their crap to people these these days. Pro-Semites are holding the door open for them.

How Israel fights By Jonathan Kay What the media does not report http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | Late on Saturday night, an Israeli commando unit landed by helicopter on a beach near the Lebanese city of Tyre. None of the soldiers wore military markings. All had grown beards, so observers would think they were just another group of Hezbollah jihadis. After landing, the soldiers made their way to a building that housed a three-man Hezbollah rocket-launcher crew. From intelligence reports, the commandos knew the trio was holed up in a second-floor apartment. The Israeli commander was the first through the door, and promptly took a bullet through a lung. The Israelis fired back. When the smoke cleared, all three Hezbollah members were dead. The Israeli commander was still breathing — but only barely. Another commando was also seriously wounded. As the commandos left — their two wounded on stretchers — they were attacked by Hezbollah gunmen spilling out of nearby buildings. Israeli helicopter gunships hovering nearby laid down a covering fire, allowing the commandos to retreat to their original landing area. After a military doctor performed emergency surgery that saved the commander's life, the whole team flew back to Israel. These mission details sound like something out of a Hollywood film. But the truly amazing part of it is that the mission happened at all. Instead of risking the lives of its most elite soldiers, Israel easily could have dropped a bomb on the building and taken out their targets while they slept. Why didn't Israel do just that? Because as well as serving as a barracks for Hezbollah, the building also contained civilians. And Israel didn't want to spill their blood. Hezbollah may wage war while hiding behind women's skirts and baby rattles. But Israel stubbornly adheres to a more humane creed. This is not a new policy that Israel adopted in response to the July 30 Qana bombing. Israeli soldiers employed the same humane methods in one of the first major engagements of this war. On June 26, Israeli infantrymen assaulted the outskirts of Bint Jbail, a major Hezbollah hub near the border. Israel could have flattened the town easily prior to its soldiers' advance — it lies well within range of its army's artillery, not to mention the Israeli air force. But according to a high-ranking Israeli officer, the carpet-bombing option was ruled out because several hundred Bint Jbail civilian residents had ignored Israel's warning to flee. As in Tyre, Hezbollah was using them as human shields. The result? Battalion 51 of Israel's Golani Brigade was ambushed by dozens of Hezbollah gunmen wielding anti-tank missiles. In the hellish close combat that followed, eight Israeli soldiers died. Like the 23 Israeli soldiers who lost their lives in the warrens of the Jenin refugee camp in 2002, the men of Battalion 51 died so that Arab civilians could live. Not one of Israel's enemies would have taken the same risks under similar circumstances. Nor is Israel simply following the letter of international law. A Hezbollah rocket crew can kills dozens, or even hundreds, of Israelis with a single volley. Demolishing that apartment building in Tyre arguably would have been a proportionate, and entirely legal, Israeli response to the threat posed by its occupants. Moreover, Israel had warned the residents of Tyre to evacuate many times. Most of those who remain in the city are Hezbollah supporters. Last week, Haidar Fayadh, a Tyre cafe owner, told The New York Times: "Everyone has a weapon in his house. There are doctors, teachers and farmers. Hezbollah is people. People are Hezbollah." Luckily for Fayadh, Israel doesn't take him at his word, or he'd be dead and all of Tyre would be a smoking ruin. By this point in the war, some readers will have heard enough about media bias. Still, I can't help but marvel at the other-worldly impression people are getting. The Israeli air force has flown 9,000 sorties during this war. The handful of tragic instances in which Israel has mistakenly attacked civilian targets are treated as war crimes. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has launched more than 2,000 missiles at Israel, every one of them deliberately targeting Israeli civilians. (The group's Syrian-made 302mm rockets are packed with tens of thousands of ball-bearings, the objective being to disfigure those who aren't killed.) But the only time this is reported is when the rockets actually hit someone — in which case the fact is cited not as an indictment of Hezbollah's barbarism, but as testament to its strength and the purported futility of Israeli strategy. This appalling double-standard goes beyond media bias. It reflects a deeper sense that pervades our entire society. After watching Arab terrorists kill innocent Jews for two generations, we have become inured to their methods. It is simply taken for granted that anti-Israel "resistance" movements will sink to the lowest possible level as soon as the shooting starts. Killing civilians. Hiding rocket launchers in homes. Shooting from mosques. All of this is unsurprising — expected even — so none of it makes the news. Let Israel mistakenly kill civilians while fighting back, on the other hand, and it's time to stop the presses.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz ordered the IDF on Friday to send additional ground forces into Lebanon and up to the Litani river, some 30 kilometers from Israel.
Hours later, France and the United States announced that they had reached a deal on a final draft resolution aimed at ending the month-long conflict. A vote on the cease-fire draft will take place at 1 a.m. IST. Israel has yet to respond to the draft and it remained unclear as to how it would affect the decision to expand the IDF operation in southern Lebanon.
Before news broke out that an agreement has been reached, Olmert's spokesman, Asaf Shariv, told The Associated Press that the expanded incursion had already begun. According to Shariv, the emerging cease-fire fails to meet Israel's basic requirements, such as stationing robust international combat troops in southern Lebanon once Israel withdraws.
"Yesterday we were very optimistic, but they (the Security Council) took the wrong turn," Shariv said.
The government is implementing Wednesday's Cabinet decision granting the army permission to carry out a massive ground offensive "to deal with the Hizbullah positions in south Lebanon, from which barrages of missiles continue to be launched against the Israeli civilian population," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev.
Regev added, however, that Israel was still open to a negotiated solution as the UN Security Council prepared to vote on the proposed cease-fire deal.
"Our action does not exclude a diplomatic option. On the contrary, we are following developments in New York closely. But so far diplomacy has not produced concrete results and it is incumbent upon the government to defend its citizens," Regev said.
The IDF has over the passed few days been gearing up for the operation which was approved by the Security Cabinet on Wednesday. According to military sources, close to 70 percent of the Katyusha rockets raining down on Israel are fired just south of, and north of the Litani river. It is in these parts of Lebanon that the Hizbullah's Nasser Unit is waiting with thousands of fighters and functioning command and control centers.
As the decision was made by Peretz and Olmert to order the IDF to move up to the Litani, talks were underway at the United Nations Security Council in New York where it appeared that member countries were on the verge of declaring a cease-fire in the region.
IDF sources said that even if a cease-fire was in the works, Israel was better off being in a better position militarily - at the Litani, and from there to conduct negotiations regarding a cease-fire resolution.
IDF officers on Thursday blasted the diplomatic echelon claiming that Olmert had restrained and limited the military from expanding its ground operations into Lebanon and from dealing a heavy blow to Hizbullah.
40,000 troops were waiting along the northern border for orders to enter Lebanon and to push up to the Litani, and an additional 7000 were currently operating on the ground in Lebanon.
A high ranking defense source told the Jerusalem Post that already early in the morning it was apparent that negotiations at the UN would not bear fruit and diplomats there would not succeed in mutually drafting a cease-fire.
The source said that Peretz and Olmert met for several hours on Friday and reviewed different drafts of the resolution, "once it became clear that there would not be a resolution in the near future, the decision was made for the IDF to launch the operation."
"We gave the diplomatic process a chance, it failed and now we will achieve our goals militarily," said the officer.
The IDF said that it would take at least one week to get to the Litani river and another 4-6 weeks to clear out Hizbullah presence and rocket launchers from the area.
